Naples, a city in southern Italy, sits on the Bay of Naples. Nearby is Mount Vesuvius, the still-active volcano that destroyed nearby Roman town Pompeii. Dating to the 2nd millennium B.C., Naples has centuries of important art and architecture. The city's cathedral, the Duomo di San Gennaro, is filled with frescoes. Other major landmarks include the lavish Royal Palace and Castel Nuovo, a 13th-century castle.
Italy's third-largest city is one of its oldest, most artistic and most appetising. Naples' centro storico (historic centre) is a Unesco World Heritage Site, its archaeological treasures are among the world's most important, and its swag of vainglorious palaces, castles and churches make Rome look positively provincial.
Then there's the food. Blessed with rich volcanic soils, a bountiful sea, and centuries of culinary know-how, the Naples region is one of Italy's epicurean heavyweights, serving up the country's best pizza, pasta and coffee, and many of its most celebrated seafood dishes, street snacks and sweet treats.
Certainly, Naples' urban sprawl can feel anarchic, tattered and unloved. But look beyond the grime, graffiti and occasional gruffness and you'll uncover a city of breathtaking frescoes, sculptures and panoramas, of unexpected elegance, of spontaneous conversations and profound humanity. Welcome to Italy's most unlikely masterpiece.
Naples used to be divided into 30 quartieri (neighbourhoods), however today these neighbourhoods don't hold much administrative use but are still used by locals to refer to parts of the city. Nowadays the city is divided into 10 municipalities. However this page will divide Naples into 5 districts and regions on the point of view of the traveller. In Naples, some may find the actual conditions of many buildings and streets, and the rampant graffiti, off-putting. Others claim this is the immense character and culture of Napoli...and even the dirt and grime has its own flavor...a Neapolitan recipe for reality, and great fun. Naples' peculiarity is that the city centre is not the elegant part of the city. Just do not expect in the city centre the pristine conditions of many other major European cities, since the historical centre, unlike most European cities, is not the downtown. If you want to visit the elegant part of the city, you can walk around the wonderful lungomare (the Riviera di Chiaia or Via Francesco Caracciolo), and visit Via dei Mille and Vomero hill (main shopping areas).
Castel dell'Ovo at Porto Santa Lucia Naples' known port with the Egg Castle on a small peninsula. The castle currently houses the Museum of Prehistory. The entrance is free and has magnificent view of the gulf of Naples from the top of the castle. Castelnuovo (Maschio Angioino) A huge medieval castle at the shore which houses the main city museum featuring various collections, but most importantly a picture gallery (with focus on 19th Century Italian painting). From the roof, you can get one of the best views of the city.

Piazza del Campo Siena
The famous public square in the heart of Siena is Piazza Del Campo. There are 10 different entrances to the piazza: the alleys and staircases and ramps and little lanes and several of those alleys are a good place to get a quick bite to eat as you're entering the Campo even though the company was a little hidden from view from the main pedestrian lanes you'll find that it's very easy to gain access nearly 500 feet wide and surrounded by shops restaurants in the towering Palazzo politico this is the very heart of town. Il Campo symbolizes the government in various ways -- one message the leaders proclaim with his large square was that they would rule the city properly and were therefore not worried about a revolution nor a gathering of large groups of people. The piazza’s divided by brick lines into sections that represent the governing Council of Nine at the time it was paved in 1349, which some people feel today that was the best government they ever had. Nine merchants and bankers ruled desiring to make themselves and everyone else rich and with the theme that all were welcome to participate the Council of nine presented a very new kind of democratic message for the Middle Ages at work so well that Siena became one of the richest cities in Europe. Like most of the rest of town the surface here is slanted along the slope of the hill adding an unusual dimension to this beautiful gathering place. Piazza Del Campo was and remains today the principal public space of the historic center and is regarded as one of Europe's greatest medieval squares it's renowned worldwide for its beauty and its architectural heritage. The Fonte Gaia, which means fountain of happiness was built in 1419 as an endpoint of the system of conduits bringing water into the city center. Construction of Palazzo Pubblico, or City Hall, began in the late 13th century in classic Sienese Gothic style, built of stone on the bottom level and brick on the upper floors, with crenellations, turrets and the tall tower giving it the appearance of a fortified castle. Parts of the large structure still function as the City Hall today. If you just want a free, quick glimpse you are welcome to walk into the inner courtyard, no charge, surrounded by an impressive arcade with colorful coats of arms and offering a dramatic view up at the Mangia Tower, while other sections are open to the public as the Civic Museum. Twice a year the Campo becomes an arena for a wild, bareback horse race called the Palio, with 30,000 screaming spectators crammed into the center and 20,000 more fans standing all around the outside and looking down from the windows and balconies. These festivities every July 2 and August 16 have been going on for the past 800 years. The shape of the piazza has often been compared in shape to a horseshoe, a half-moon, a sea-shell, and an amphitheater, and yet it’s commonly called a square. The open site was a marketplace established before the 13th century on a sloping site near the meeting point of the three hillside communities that coalesce to form Siena: the Castellare, the San Martino and the Camollia. It's a great place to have an outdoor meal at one of the many sidewalk restaurants that are around it your eating here more for the ambience than for the quality of the food you probably find some better food at a better price in the little back streets away from the tourist area but you can't beat this location especially in the evening as will be showing you. The piazza’s lined by palaces formerly housing the noble families of old Siena: the Sansedoni, the Piccolomini, the Saracini and others all build to a fairly uniform height and appearance. Regarding the timing of your visit to Siena, you want to get here in the afternoon so you can walk around and enjoy the town, go into to the Cathedral, enjoy the late afternoon Passeggiata, the stroll on the main street, and then at twilight come into the Campo for dinner. You will find this experience of eating an evening meal at twilight, sunset on the Campo, is going to be one of the highlights of your trip, no question about it. Sit back and relax, enjoy the ambience, have a carafe of wine, have some antipasti, have some salad eat, a main course. Don't worry about the pricing or the quality – it's going to be fairly reasonable – and just enjoy this environment and experience. You will probably look back on that moment in future years as one of the highlights of all your travels. And then after dinner you can stroll back up the main street heading to the bus stop.

We had really good lunch before we headed out this day. Went to the Old Castle, Velia Beach, and the New Castle in Cilento, Southern Italy.
If you are in or around Southern Italy, check out this place. It's one of my favorite places in Southern Italy. 6 1/2 years ago, we actually inquired about renting a house in this town. Castelnuovo is such a peaceful town.

Imperia: The Olive Tree Museum Carli | Italia Slow Tour
When visiting Imperia, pay a visit to the Olive Tree Museum Carli. Could you guess the importance of the olive trees and of the olives in the Mediterranean area? At the museum we discover that the relationship between man and the olive began in upper Mesopotamia, 7,000 years ago. Then the cultural value of the olive tree has been handed down to nowadays and we find it as a symbol in the main monotheistic religions.

Herceg Novi: Montenegro, HD Video Tour

Enjoy...
Herceg Novi (Херцег Нови) is a coastal town in Montenegro located at the entrance to the Bay of Kotor and at the foot of Mount Orjen. It is the administrative center of the Herceg Novi Municipality with around 33,000 inhabitants. Herceg Novi was known as Castelnuovo between 1482 and 1797 when it was part of Ottoman Empire and the Albania Veneta of the Republic of Venice. Herceg Novi has had a turbulent past, despite being one of the youngest settlements on the Adriatic. A history of varied occupations has created a blend of diverse and picturesque architectural style in the city.
Herceg Novi was founded 600 years ago (in 1382 year). The fortification facilities in the town – fortresses from the Turkish, Venetian, Spanish, and Austrian period- testify about those long gone days. According to the most relevant historical data Herceg Novi was founded by the Bosnian King Tvrtko I Kotromanic, in the spring of 1382. Tvrtko I was also “the King of Serbs, Bosnia and the coast and west sides”. Herceg Novi, was established in the former district Dracevica, in the Topalj bay (a part of the present day area Topla near Herceg Novi), and its former name was Sveti Stefan (ST. STEFAN). Except the present day name (Herceg Novi), the town was also known by the names NOVI, CASTRUM NOVUM, CASTEL NUOVO… The present day name the town got during the reign of Herceg Stjepan Vukcic Kosaca, better known by the name Herceg Stjepan, and the wider area with which he ruled was know as Herzegovina. In that period (XV century) Herceg Novi experiences the greatest development and bloom. The town was conquered by the Turks in the 1482, and they ruled Herceg Novi for almost 200 years. More specifically, Turkish reign in Herceg Novi ends in 1687 year. From 1687 to 1797 Herceg Novi is being ruled by Venetia.
Historical data testify of the short Spanish interruption of the Turkish reign of the town. According to those data, Spaniards rule Herceg Novi from 1538 to 1539. Except the Turks and the Spaniards, Herceg Novi is being ruled by other great conquerors, and the historical circumstances have made that on the territory of Herceg Novi many people and many civilianization have reverted leaving great marks on the history, culture and economical development of the town and the surrounding.
Herceg Novi is also being conquered by the Venetians, who ruled the town until the final ruin of the Venetian Republic in 1797 year. The period after that is marked by often changes of the administrations which are governing the town. In the year 1797 the first Austrian administration was established in Herceg Novi which lasted until 1806.
For a year (1806 – 1807) Herceg Novi is being ruled by the Russians. The period from 1807 to 1815 in Herceg Novi is characterized by the French government under the authority of Napoleon. In a very short interval from 1813 to 1814, Herceg Novi is being taken over by the temporary government of Montenegro and Boka Kotorska, which are already replaced by the Austro – Hungarian government in 1815. From 1815 to 1918 we have the second Austro – Hungarian reign over the town. With the crash of the Austro – Hungarian state in 1918, in Herceg Novi Serbian army has arrived. At that time the town enters the former Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenians, or as from 1929 it was called Kingdom Yugoslavia. In 1941 Herceg Novi is being occupied by the fascists, first the Italians (1941 – 1943), and then the Germans (1943 – 1944). The town is being liberated by the partisan troupes at the end of October 1944.
POTENTIA. AREA ARCHEOLOGICA (PORTO RECANATI, MACERATA, MARCHE, ITALY)
