Ostia is a large neighbourhood in the X Municipio of the commune of Rome, Italy, near the ancient port of Rome, named Ostia, which is now a major archaeological site known as Ostia Antica. Ostia (also called Ostia Lido or Lido di Roma or Lido di Ostia) is also the only municipio or district of Rome on the Tyrrhenian Sea and many Romans spend the summer holidays there. With about 85,000 inhabitants, Ostia is the first or second-most populated frazione of Italy, depending on whether Mestre is counted.
The town is located on the Tyrrhenian coast, close to Acilia and separated from Fiumicino by the mouth of the Tiber River (Tevere). Ostia was the site of the death of Saint Monica (mother of Saint Augustine) in 387 on their way back to Africa after Augustine's conversion to Christianity.
In the 846 a Saracen fleet of 73 ships landed at Ostia, and raided inland, sacking Rome. In doing so, they burnt the churches of St. Peter and St. Paul. The new pope Leo IV (r.847-855) ordered Rome’s walls to be rebuilt and refurbished, and had them extended to protect the Vatican hill. He also formed a naval alliance with the cities of Amalfi, Naples, and Gaeta, which drove off a Saracen fleet in 849. Three years later Pope Leo IV issued a call to the Franks, declaring Whoever meets death steadfastly in this fight [against Moslem raiders of Italy] the Heavenly Kingdom will not be closed to him. This becomes a much quoted text among canonists of the High Middle Ages.
The neighbourhood was founded in 1884 near the remains of Ostia Antica, the port city of ancient Rome. This was possible after reclamation of the nearby marshland (the pond of Ostia), which was infested by malaria. The first inhabitants were peasants coming from Ravenna, in Romagna. Due to the opening of the urban Roma-Ostia railway in 1924, the new village soon became the favourite sea resort of the Romans, while many Art Nouveau houses were built on the waterfront.
The new village was connected to central Rome through the new Via Ostiense, which was opened in 1907. During the Fascist period, the government massively expanded the neighbourhood, which got its ultimate architectural character thanks to many new buildings in Stile Littorio. New infrastructures, like a second road to Rome (the Via del Mare), the promenade, and a water airport were all built during this period.
After World War II, many bathing establishments were built on the sea side, and Ostia experienced a tourist boom. The new Cristoforo Colombo avenue connected Ostia with the EUR district in Rome. However, sea pollution, which became apparent during the 1970s, lowered the popularity of Ostia as a sea resort. The building of the Leonardo da Vinci Airport in Fiumicino in 1956 made Ostia an attractive district for airport and airline workers.
Italian intellectual, film director and poet Pier Paolo Pasolini was assassinated near the water airport (water aerodrome) on 2 November 1975. In 1976 Ostia became part of the XIII Municipio of the Comune of Rome. Nowadays, due to the expansion of the city, only the Park of Castelfusano separates Ostia from the other quarters of Rome.
The regional Rome-Lido railway line, which carries over 90,000 passengers a day, connects Ostia to the centre of Rome, providing up to 12 journeys per hour during rush hour. The full length of the line is 28.359 kilometres (17.621 mi). It has 13 stops, and the journey time is roughly 37 minutes. The Roman terminal is at Roma Porta San Paolo station, very close to the Piramide stop (Rome Metro, Line B) and close to Roma Ostiense railway station. Rail stops in Ostia are Ostia Antica, Ostia Lido Nord, Ostia Lido Centro, Ostia Stella Polare, Ostia Castel Fusano and Ostia Cristoforo Colombo.

Ostia, conosciuta anche come Lido di Ostia (o Lido di Roma), è una frazione di Roma. È l'insediamento principale del Municipio XIII ed è costituita dai tre quartieri marini di Roma, Q.XXXIII Lido di Ostia Ponente, Q.XXXIV Lido di Ostia Levante e Q.XXXV Lido di Castel Fusano.
La nascita del quartiere marino di Roma avvenne durante il regime fascista, che la trasformò nella spiaggia di Roma, collegata dalla ferrovia, affiancata poi nel 1927 da una delle prime autostrade italiane, la Via del Mare, mentre venivano elaborati i primi progetti per l'aeroporto di Roma-Fiumicino[senza fonte]. Nel 1933 prese ufficialmente il nome di Lido di Roma.
In vista della esposizione universale di Roma, prevista nel 1942, fu pianificata ed avviata la costruzione di un nuovo quartiere a sud della città, l'(E 42), e fu progettata una strada (oggi dedicata a Cristoforo Colombo), al tempo chiamata la Via Imperiale, per collegare Roma al mare. Il progetto venne approvato nel 1938, ma la strada venne aperta al traffico solo dopo la guerra, nel 1949.
La cittadina fu pianificata, e parzialmente realizzata, secondo gli allora vigenti criteri urbanistici ed i temi stilistici propri del Razionalismo italiano. Fu suddivisa in una fascia lungo il mare, con piccoli villini usati come seconde case da Romani abbienti ed una fascia per gli operai: in quel periodo furono creati intorno a Roma quartieri periferici e borgate per gli sfollati, causa sventramenti, dei rioni storici come ad esempio Acilia, prima borgata di Roma che si collocava a metà strada dalla costa; era infatti obbiettivo dichiarato del regime quello di costruire la terza Roma, che si sarebbe dovuta estendere fino al Tirreno.
Lo scoppio della II guerra mondiale interruppe i lavori in gran parte ancora agli inizi; è soltanto negli anni sessanta che Ostia si ingrandisce, sviluppandosi anche nella parte di ponente con alcuni edifici popolari nei pressi della foce del Tevere; fino ad assumere il tipico aspetto di un popoloso quartiere romano e comincia ad essere usata come luogo di vacanza, ma anche come quartiere, inizialmente abitato da pescatori poi anche da lavoratori diventando realmente una importante frazione della città di cui ancora fa parte.
Ostia ai giorni nostri è diventata oltretutto una località turistica di tutto rispetto e, dopo l'edificazione di un nuovo approdo turistico per imbarcazioni da parte di privati denominato il porto di Roma, è ritornata ad essere com'era in origine il Mare di Roma a pieno titolo, e uno dei quartieri più popolosi della capitale. A sud di Ostia si estendono numerose spiagge libere tutelate con dune e flora mediterranea.
Nella storia occasioni di distacco da Roma e quindi di diventare comune autonomo, come la vicina Fiumicino, sono state proposte agli abitanti con due referendum, il primo nel 1989 ove prevalsero i NO e il secondo nel 1999 dove non si raggiunse il quorum. Nel 2008 si è stilato un progetto chiamato Patto per Ostia e il XIII Municipio che prevede maggiore autonomia amministrativa ad Ostia.
