Monday - Pedra do Sal
Our week starts out at the most popular party spot on Monday night in downtown Rio…
Tuesday - Gavea
On Tuesday, join the international crowd at the Zero Zero club in Gavea for a good vibe and great dance music.
Wednesday - Botafogo
Botafogo is the place to be in on Wednesday night as there’s a variety of bars to check out, and you can’t miss Karaoke night at Casa de Matriz!
Thursday - Baixo Gavea
University Students flood the streets of Baixo Gavea on Thursday night to enjoy some drinks and let off a little steam.
Friday - Lapa
The heart of Rio nightlife is in the downtown area of Lapa. You can pre-game in the streets and listen to all the great live music.
From there, head into one of the popular night clubs like Lapa 40 or Rio Scenarium.
And if you have the opportunity, you gotta experience a Monobloco concert at Fundição Progresso.
Saturday - Samba School
Sunday - Beach, Santa Teresa or Urca
And If you’re still alive on Sunday, you have a few options… You could go to the beach and relax, re-hydrate with a coconut water, and watch the sunset from Arpoador, maybe you’d prefer heading to Santa Teresa, eat a traditional Feijoada and watch the sunset from Hotel Santa Teresa, or you can go down to my favorite neighborhood in all of Rio, Urca, to drink a few beers with friends along the Marina and enjoy the views.
Whatever you decide, just make sure you get enough rest to do it all over again tomorrow.

Rio de Janeiro Carnival highlights.
The competition took place on March 3 and 4, 2019. The Special Group of the Samba Schools Parade always happen on Sunday and Monday which is before Tuesday of carnival (mobile holiday that occurs 47 days before Easter, and which this year it is on March 5). On both nights, the parade starts at 9 o'clock and ends at sunrise.

13:48 Este año 2019 la escuela de Samba Mangueira ganó el carnaval. El desfile de Mangueira estuvo dedicado a los héroes populares ausentes en las páginas de los libros de historia, con un protagonismo importante para negros, pobres e indígenas.
La activista Marielle Franco, asesinada en marzo del año 2018, fue homenajeada durante el desfile, provocando fuertes aplausos y lágrimas entre los asistentes. La escuela de samba ha ganado grandes reconocimientos y el enredo (la canción) ha sido un éxito en Brasil.

Carnival in Rio: Viradouro 2010 - Narrated in English
Samba School: Viradouro
Viradouro represents Niteroi, the city across the bay from Rio. It has joined the elite Special Group in the late 1980s. It is, nevertheless, now an excellent, well organized and really creative school, which is always worthwhile to watch parade (it usually meets with big cheers by the crowds), although it only won once. It is particularly famous for its percussionists, which traditionally score 10's year after year.
The highlight of Brazil Carnival is undoubtedly the Rio Samba Schools Parade, a totally unique event in the world.
The Rio Samba Parade is the review of a fierce competition between the Rio samba schools. The judges and spectators watch the principal parades in the Sambodromo which was especially built for this event.
The Samba Parade is something everybody should experience at least once in their life. The event is broadcast live to several countries.
The Rio Samba Parade is very distinctive from all other street parades held at some other places in the world. It is not a street happening where people move chaotically about as they like, but more of a highly orchestrated show of vast proportions. Every parader has a specific role and place according to his costume in a particular wing, of a particular section of the samba school he/she is parading in support of.
Each year each school chooses a different theme for the Samba Parade. It can be a celebration of a particular period, or, of famous figures of Brazilian history. It may highlight a special event or speak of anything that might move the spirit and imagination; like a special animal, or one of the elements; water or fire, etc. The school has to illustrate the chosen theme through all its work:
• the samba tunes, which are especially written for that year
• the richly decorated floats and costumes of their 3,000 to 5,000 parading members designed by the school's Carnival Designer (the so called Carnavalesco).
The parade of every school is highly organized and designed. They line up in a unique way to present their pageant.
The costumes are extremely imaginative, colorful, elaborate and detailed. They are truly original, designed and made from scratch each year. They have mirrors, feathers, metallic cloth, silk and sometimes gems or coins. These costumes take months to make. The work starts roughly 8 months in advance.
You may think of the whole event as a tropical opera or rather like several operas happening on one night. It is beautiful to watch and the experience for the paraders themselves is so intense that the memories last for a lifetime.

Ipanema beach, Rio de Janeiro
Ipanema Beach is famously known for its elegance and social qualities. Two mountains called the Dois Irmãos (Two Brothers) rise at the western end of the beach. The beach is divided into segments by marks known as postos (lifeguard towers). Beer is sold everywhere on the beach along with the traditional cachaça. There are always circles of people playing football, volleyball, and footvolley, a locally invented sport that is a combination of volleyball and football.
In the winter the surf can reach 9 feet. The water quality varies with days of light-blue water to a more murky green after heavy rains. Constant swells keep the water clean. The often treacherous beach break regularly forms barrels.
Just west of this colorful section and towards Leblon is another popular stretch of sand known as Posto 10 (10th lifeguard tower) where young and often beautiful carioca men and women hipsters congregate.

Samba Video of the Official Samba Competition in Brazil Called “Official Rio Queen of Carnival “. This video shows the samba routines of the winners of this contest, which is considered the most challenging samba dancing in Brazil. Below a description of the event:
The Carnival of 2016 Olympic city elected at the Samba City on November 14 the new Queen and two princesses for 2016 Rio de Janeiro Carnival, at an event held by the RioTur, official Tourism Secretariat of Rio.
The official competition was hotly contended and had as the grand winner Clara Cristina Paixão, re-elected as Official Queen of the Rio de Janeiro Carnival.
The second prize as first Princess went to Uillana Adães and as Second Princess, Bianca Monteiro.
Each samba dancer had the opportunity to present their samba routine for a minute with her full carnival costumes, adding another degree of difficulty. ( Many costume may weight up to 20 Kilos) All candidates also answered questions from a panel of experts. At the beginning of the competition, 35 dancers were pre-selected, and after three qualifiers eight finalists remained for the grand showdown.
Follows the names of the eight finalists: Bianca Monteiro, Clara Passion, Cynthia Barboza; Deisiane Conception, Egili Oliveira; Georgia Gomes; Vidal Priscyla; and Uillana Adães
The Queen of the Olympic Rio Carnival will won from the Rio city government a crown, a sash plus the amount of thirty thousand reais.
The runner-up takes the title of first princess of the Rio Carnival, a tiara, a sash and receives twenty-two thousand Brazilian Reais. The third place is elected as the second princess, also winning a tiara, sash, the same amount of the first princess. It is also important to remember that the contest has been around for over fifty years and officially marks the start of Carnival in Brazil.
