10 Things to do in Cardiff, Wales Travel Guide
Join us from Cardiff, Wales as we cover 10 things to do in Cardiff city including popular attractions, cool castes, green escapes, and Welsh food worth trying in this travel guide. Although we were sick for most of our visit to Cardiff, UK we ended up still finding enough time to visit the city center, our neighborhood and a few off-the-beaten path attractions.
What we loved most about Cardiff, Wales is just how friendly the locals here are in the supermarkets, restaurants, pubs and cafe that we frequented. On a rainy day we might put on the kettle, down a few Welsh cakes and pop open our umbrella for a wee stroll. When it was sunny, which fortunately for us was most of the time, we enjoyed exploring castles and arcades while wandering around in parks.
Cardiff is a city you appreciate the more you linger. You start to find favorite cafes, restaurants and pubs you return to frequently and after a while you feel more like a local after recognizing faces in and around your neighborhood. This is what we'll remember most and why we recommend visiting Cardiff which is a city with more of a town vibe.

10 Things to do in Cardiff, Wales Travel Guide Video Script:
Well hello hello from Cardiff, Wales. New destination for us. New destination. It is our very first time to Wales and we're so excited to be here. We've wanted to come to Wales for a really long time and we're going to explore Cardiff and show you guys what you can do here in this travel guide.
We started our visit of Cardiff Castle with a self-guided tour of the Castle Apartments. This is the newest-looking part of the castle as it was renovated in the early 19th century in the Gothic revival style. As part of the tour we got to see the Banqueting Hall, the Library, and a few different rooms, but the place that really caught our attention was the Arab room designed in a Moorish style which is quite different from the rest of the rooms.
We continued on to the Norman Keep, which dates to the 11th century. The 12-sided structure sits atop a hill and is surrounded by a moat, and if you climb to the very top you get some nice 360 degree views of the city.
And lastly, we visited the roman walls, and although these too have been renovated, the foundations date back to 50 AD.
And that’s it for our visit to Cardiff, Wales. Our trip was short and sweet but we hope this video gave you a few ideas of things to do in Cardiff on your own visit. Now you know the drill, if you have any other suggestions of cool things to do in and around Cardiff, feel free to share those with fellow travellers in the comments below. Wishing you happy travels!
This is part of our Travel in Wales video series showcasing Welsh food, Welsh culture and Welsh cuisine.

Cardiff, United Kingdom. History, Economy, Best Time To Travel
Cardiff is the capital of Wales in the United Kingdom. The eleventh-largest city in the United Kingdom, it is Wales's chief commercial centre, the base for most national cultural institutions and Welsh media, and the seat of the National Assembly for Wales. Although it had a reputation of being an industrial city, Cardiff has changed dramatically in recent decades. It is now a lively and modern capital city and quickly becoming one of the United Kingdom's tourism hot spots.
HISTORY
Cardiff's history follows its castle which has been occupied for over 2,000 years when the Romans created a fort on the river Taff. Cardiff was lucky not to have its city centre heavily bombed like other industrial cities during world war 2.
POPULATION
Cardiff has an ethnically diverse population due to its past trading connections, post-war immigration and the large numbers of foreign students who attend university in the city. 70% of Cardiff's population described itself as Christian. Cardiff's Muslim population stood at 3.7%. Cardiff has one of the longest-established Muslim populations in the UK, started by Yemeni sailors who settled in the city during the 19th century.
CLIMATE
Cardiff lies within the north temperate zone and has an essentially maritime climate, characterised by mild weather that is often cloudy, wet and windy. Summers tend to be warm and sunny, with average maximum temperatures between 19 and 22 °C. Winters tend to be fairly wet, but rainfall is rarely excessive and the temperature usually stays above freezing. Spring and autumn feel quite similar and the temperatures tend to stay above 14 °C.
ECONOMY
As the capital city of Wales, Cardiff is the main engine of growth in the Welsh economy. Industry has played a major part in Cardiff's development for many centuries. Cardiff's port area, known as Tiger Bay, became the busiest port in the world and – for some time – the world's most important coal port. In the years leading up to the First World War, more than 10 million tonnes of coal was exported annually from Cardiff Docks.
Today, Cardiff is the principal finance and business services centre in Wales, and as such there is a strong representation of finance and business services in the local economy.
TOURISM
Cardiff is a very green city, having the most green space per person in the UK. The city centre has seen huge development over the last decade and is now considered one of the top ten shopping destinations in the United Kingdom. It has a reputation as a city of castles, having 5 different castles within its surroundings.

Cardiff is a port city on the south coast of Wales, where the River Taff meets the Severn Estuary. It was proclaimed the nation’s capital in 1955. The revitalized waterfront at Cardiff Bay includes the Wales Millennium Centre, home of the national opera, orchestra, theater and dance companies, plus shops at Mermaid Quay. Architect Richard Rogers’ strikingly modern Senedd building houses the Welsh National Assembly.
Cardiff is the capital and largest city in Wales and the eleventh-largest city in the United Kingdom. The city of Cardiff is the country's chief commercial centre, the base for most national cultural and sporting institutions, the Welsh national media, and the seat of the National Assembly for Wales.
The city of Cardiff is the county town of the historic county of Glamorgan (and later South Glamorgan). Cardiff is part of the Eurocities network of the largest European cities. The Cardiff Urban Area covers a slightly larger area outside the county boundary, and includes the towns of Dinas Powys and Penarth. A small town until the early 19th century, its prominence as a major port for the transport of coal following the arrival of industry in the region contributed to its rise as a major city.
Cardiff has seen significant development. A new waterfront area at Cardiff Bay contains the Senedd building, home to the Welsh Assembly and the Wales Millennium Centre arts complex. Current developments include the continuation of the redevelopment of the Cardiff Bay and city centre areas with projects such as the Cardiff International Sports Village, a BBC drama village, and a new business district in the city centre.
Sporting venues in the city include the Millennium Stadium (the national stadium for the Wales national rugby union team), SWALEC Stadium (the home of Glamorgan County Cricket Club), Cardiff City Stadium (the home of Cardiff City football team), Cardiff International Sports Stadium (the home of Cardiff Amateur Athletic Club) and Cardiff Arms Park (the home of Cardiff Blues and Cardiff RFC rugby union teams).

Places to see in ( Cardiff - UK ) Cardiff Bay
Cardiff Bay is the area of water created by the Cardiff Barrage in South Cardiff, the capital of Wales. Cardiff Bay is also the name commonly given to the areas of the city surrounding the Cardiff Bay .
The creation of Cardiff Bay is now widely regarded as one of the most successful regeneration projects in the United Kingdom. The Cardiff Bay is supplied by two rivers (Taff and Ely) to form a 500-acre (2.0 km2) freshwater lake around the former dockland area south of the city centre. The Cardiff Bay was formerly tidal, with access to the sea limited to a couple of hours each side of high water but now provides 24-hour access through three locks.
Cardiff Bay played a major part in Cardiff’s development by being the means of exporting coal from the South Wales Valleys to the rest of the world, helping to power the industrial age. The coal mining industry helped fund the building of Cardiff into the Capital city of Wales and helped the Third Marquis of Bute, who owned the docks, become the richest man in the world at the time.
The Cardiff Bay Development Corporation (CBDC) was created in 1987 to stimulate the redevelopment of 1,100 hectares (2,700 acres) of derelict land. The St David's Hotel & Spa is a 5-star luxury hotel with commanding views of the Cardiff Bay and Penarth. The Pierhead was built in 1897 and designed by William Frame. The Senedd is the National Assembly for Wales building. The Wales Millennium Centre is home to the Welsh National Opera.Cardiff Bay railway station is northeast of Mermaid Quay and is served by shuttle services to Cardiff Queen Street railway station.

Port Talbot is a town located in the county borough of Neath Port Talbot, Wales. It is best known as the home of the Port Talbot Steelworks, one of biggest steelworks in the world, which currently employs an estimated 10% of the town's population. The steelworks has for many years been under threat of closure.
The town is built along the eastern rim of Swansea Bay in a narrow strip of coastal plain surrounding the River Afan estuary. Swansea is visible on the opposite side of Swansea Bay. The local beach is known as Aberafan Sands and is situated along the edge of the bay between the River Afan and the River Neath. The other beach in Port Talbot is Margam Sands, popularly known as Morfa Beach. The north-eastern edge of the town is marked by the River Neath. A landmark in the town is the Port Talbot Steelworks.

The name 'Port Talbot' first appears in 1837 as the name of the new docks built on the south east side of the river Afan by the Talbot family. Over time it came to be applied to the whole of the emerging conurbation.

Places to see in ( Cardigan - UK )
Cardigan is a town in the county of Ceredigion in Wales. Cardigan lies on a tidal reach of the River Teifi at the point where Ceredigion meets Pembrokeshire. Cardigan was the county town of the historic county of Cardiganshire and is the second largest town in present-day Ceredigion.
The settlement at Cardigan was developed around the Norman castle built in the late 11th or early 12th century. The castle was the location of the first National Eisteddfod in 1176; it underwent restoration in 2014. The town became an important port in the 18th century, but declined by the early 20th century owing to its shallow harbour. Modern Cardigan is a compact and busy town with most facilities for retail, education, health, worship and sport.
In 1176, Cardigan Castle became the site of the first competitive Eisteddfod. Cardigan also hosted the National Eisteddfod of Wales in 1942 and 1976. The castle was for many years privately owned and became run down and derelict. The town council itself showed little interest in saving it. However, a group of volunteers and the local Catholic priest, Seamus Cunane, working separately, did raise its profile. Ceredigion County Council bought it in 2003. Cardigan castle is open to the public. There is luxury accommodation for hire, a heritage centre with education facilities, a restaurant, an events and open-air concert area, and there are rooms for hire for classes.
A bypass was constructed to the south-east of the town in 1989–90, including a new concrete bridge (Priory Bridge) over the River Teifi. Bus services link Cardigan with most nearby towns and villages in Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire. Cardigan railway station was the terminus of the Whitland and Cardigan Railway, opened on 31 August 1886. The line, previously known as the Whitland and Taff Vale Railway, and later familiarly as the Cardi Bach, was built between 1869 and 1873. With the extension to Cardigan opening in 1886, operations were taken over by the Great Western Railway.

Visiting Bath England
Built for pleasure and relaxation, beautiful Bath has been a wellbeing destination since Roman times. The waters are still a big draw, both at the ancient Roman Baths and the thoroughly modern Thermae Bath Spa, which houses the only natural thermal hot springs in Britain you can bathe in.
Historic Roman Bath, Hot Springs, 2,000 yrs ago (Bath, England) 9
Constructed around 70AD as a grand bathing mineral healing hot springs, but founded by Prince Bladud around 863BC, who was cured from his skin disease after bathing in the hot springs. It’s interesting because the actually source of water remains a bit of a mystery. This Roman bath (hot springs) is know for it’s healing waters (42 minerals), a place of worship (goddess Minerva), and socializing for the Romans about 2,000 years ago.
This true to life, Roman bath museum was an extraordinary place of peace, tranquility, and healing energy. I felt so sound and grounded in this space.
To experience the full feel of the Hot springs you can check out the historic award-winning day spa combining the ‘old and new’ at Thermae Bath Spa, which I’ll cover in another video to come. Stay tuned.
