August 17, 2014 - While kayaking with Blue Water Ventures guides off the coast of Moss Landing Beach (Monterey County, CA), we were suddenly surrounded by about 5 whales feeding on sardines. We had to get out of the way to ensure we did not disrupt their feeding path.

Whale Frolicking Ten Yards Off Beach, Moss Landing, California, May 12, 2013
Whale is frolicking only ten yards from the beach in Moss Landing (near Monterey) California. Spotted him while walking along the beach and luckily, had my digital camera with me. He occasionally stick his snout out of the water, shows a dorsal fin, raises a flipper or sprays water through his blowhole.
Whales of Moss Landing
My husband and I drove up the coast from Los Angeles to San Francisco for an eye medical trial and we stopped to go whale watching at Moss Landing. We heard that people were seeing lots of whales there. It was true. On our evening cruise, we saw about 20 whales, 10 close to the boat.
I had severe double vision, but was able to capture this short video of the whales on my phone..... The video was cut off abruptly because my mom called in! Classic timing!
It is true what they say, though, about the GOOD LUCK of seeing a Whale's Tail.... I saw quite a few.
On the way home from the medical trial, I regained my vision. and I was able to drive after 2 1/2 years of not being able to. Truly a miracle..... I don't have any tattoos, but if I were to get my first one -- it would be a whale's tail!
Prickly Shark's of Monterey Bay, California
Just a few hundred meters off Moss Landing in about 120 ft of water, one may encounter large sharks that move from the depths of the Monterey Canyon into shallower waters. Often these are Prickly Sharks (ECHINORHINUS COOKEI).

Blue Ocean Whale Watching - Moss Landing, CA
Whale Watching about 10min. off shore in Moss Landing, CA. Schools of anchovies were everywhere, which brought the Humpbacks in droves. We saw one feeding that had over 12 Humpbacks working on a single bait ball. Yes, that's a standing paddle boarder in the distance, they came pretty close to him. The one breaching is a calf. Within the 4-hour tour, our boat witnessed about a dozen humpback breaches!

Whales and birds off Moss Landing
On August 5,2014 we went to Moss Landing, which is located on Monterey Bay, to see the humpback wales. The whales have been feeding on anchovies for a few weeks. There were many whales there, but most of them were far away from shore (that's why the quality of some images is rather bad) . Still we were able to observe fountains, tails, fins, flippers and the most exiting of all lunge feeding. There also were California sea lions feeding together with the whales. All the time there also were some birds present, but suddenly more and more birds were swarming over the Bay. Eventually there were so many birds( Sooty shearwaters, and many terns , brown pelicans, sea gulls and other birds) that it was hard to see whales behind them. It was quite a show!
