Santa Cruz Mountian Brewing
On your way south from San Francisco on Highway 1, the scenery is absolutely stunning - chock full of parks and turn-outs offering travelers majestic views of the Pacific Ocean. Eventually, Highway 1 leads into the original Surf City USA of Santa Cruz, California. Santa Cruz is well known for a number of things including great surfing, an eclectic community and being a university town. Despite the obvious, many parallels are often drawn between Austin and Santa Cruz, but they have one staple to their community that Austin does not (currently) Organic Beer.
Organic Beer? I know it sounds kind of niche but the folks at Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing have mastered the organic craft brew business. Founder and head brew master Chad Brill was working for the local Parks and Recreation Department when his wife taught him all about home brewing. My wife actually taught me how to brew beer Chad states with a giggle on a sunny afternoon over a pint. Once he got comfortable with brewing, their garage became increasingly small. One day they were driving around town and found a small warehouse (see the video) for rent and they decided to start brewing beer in this rented space as their home was busting at the seams.
Once they got the space, they started brewing different flavors and a few stood out to their friends. Eventually, they decided to get a bigger set-up which they found half-buried in the ground. They cleaned up the equipment, started purchasing kegs and began brewing beer for public consumption soon after. Since 2006, things have remained relatively unchanged and yet they have changed dramatically. For example, SCMB now has a tasting room with an outdoor patio in the front, has their beer distributed throughout the West Coast and is pumping out over 1,000 bbls of goodness each year.
As organically as the business started, the reasons for brewing with all organic ingredients also resonate with Chad and his wife Emily Thomas. The couple has always lived in an area where locally produced and organic goods are plentiful. They firmly believe in purveying their goods as locally as possible and with the beer, this has proven to be a bit tricky. Genetically modified grain and crops are frighteningly unchecked and who wants that in their beer? states Thomas, co-founder of the brewery. Additionally, hops are one of the most heavily sprayed (pesticides and herbicides) crop due to easy pest infestations, a fact that most consumers probably do not even consider as they drink their favorite beer.
Ironically, SCMB imports most of their organic hops (mostly) from New Zealand due to lack of availability in the US while their grains (mostly) come from Canada - and they would like to see this changed. The problem is that there are no standards with organic beer. You could use one ingredient in the beer and call your beer organic. All of the ingredients we use in our beers are certified organic, and that is important to us states Brill. Additionally, some breweries might have an organic beer as part of a larger lineup, but the lineup at SCMB is all organic.
The lack of available resources also makes brewing beer a constant challenge at SCMB. Most breweries can consistently brew the same beer every time, but when relying on seasonal products from various parts of the world, SCMB is constantly scrambling to adjust recipes to yield consistent results. But dont let this fool you; the beers at SCMB are really good. I recently visited them and spent a couple of hours with Chad and Nicole Beatie (Sales Director and all things PR) and had a flight of their brews. Their standard lineup consists of an Amber, Pale Ale, Brown Ale, Stout, Wheat and Porter. Throw in a few seasonal brews and its no wonder why this place is packed most evenings. I especially enjoyed their India Pale Ale a very classic West Coast style IPA with a whopping 78 IBUs.
I caught up with Chad and Nicole and learned more about Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing.

Discretion becomes first Green Certified brewery in Santa Cruz
For the owners of Discretion Brewing, it was never just about the beer. Their organic ales and lagers may steal the limelight, but the true purpose of their business is to work together as a family while giving back to the community. Discretion’s Chief Beer Ambassador, Dustin Vereker, explains that when they first opened their doors in 2013, environmental stewardship was a top priority.
“When we first thought about starting Discretion Brewing, being good stewards of the world around us was one of the key tenets of our business plan,” says Vereker. “We have three generations that are growing up through this business and we want to leave this world better than we found it.”
This commitment to improving the world around them is present in Discretion’s welcoming, inclusive space, their delicious craft beer made with organic ingredients, and, of course, their investment in solar.
Solar-powered pints reduce resources and overhead
Everything Discretion does has sustainability in mind, from brewing with organic malts and hops to reducing water usage and waste. (Central Coast pigs get to chow down on the brewery’s spent grain, diverting 225,00 pounds of grain from the landfill every year!)
They knew solar was the next logical step, but the up-front cost was a concern at first. Once they saw the long-term return on investment, however, any remaining doubts disappeared.
“We chose to go solar because it just made sense,” says Vereker. “We care about our local community and the global environment, and we saw that we’d basically get electricity for free after 7 years. Allterra gave us a very clear understanding of what they would do and gave us the cost up front. When we saw everything penciled out for us, the money was a non-issue. Beyond that, the feel good factor of knowing that we’re generating our own electricity in our own facility to make our own product … just that alone is enough for us.”
Powered by the sun and exceptional service
Installed in 2014, Discretion’s 120 high-efficiency panels initially powered 75 percent of the brewery’s total electricity needs. They’ve now almost tripled in size, but the 30K solar system still provides 50 percent of their energy needs, from their giant walk-in fridge and pump system to lighting, computers, and everything else needed to run a modern-day business.
Over the years, Vereker says, the above-and-beyond level of service they’ve come to expect from Allterra has never fallen short.
“Allterra has always been very responsive, even post installation,” says Vereker. “They’re always willing to come out, even after-hours. They’ve been great from day one all the way through to today, four-and-a-half years later.”
Industry leaders in sustainability
The first solar-powered brewery in Santa Cruz County and one of only a few in the state, Discretion has always been a leader in sustainable business practices. A certified green business through the Santa Cruz County Green Business Program, Discretion also helped the program establish current green guidelines for the brewery sector.
“When it comes to Discretion I’m very impressed,” says Shawn Orgel-Olson, Coordinator for the Santa Cruz County Green Business Program. “They’re doing so much that they don’t advertise, from how they’re sourcing the ingredients to how they’re using solar energy to power their brewery ... They’re always conscientious about what they’re doing.”
When certified green businesses unite
As a certified green business itself, Allterra is proud to have played a role in Discretion’s sustainability efforts and their ability to better serve the Santa Cruz community. Vereker agrees that Allterra has been an invaluable partner in helping them achieve their goals and uphold their values.
“When we started Discretion Brewing we thought of creating a community space where everyone could come and feel safe,” says Vereker. “We also wanted the business to give back to the community through sustainability goals, charity donations, and through just good, solid people. The folks at Allterra Solar have helped us do that in more ways than one.”

Santa Cruz beach access blocked by new gate
The California Coastal Commission is investigating complaints that homeowners installed a new gate that blocks public access to Twin Lakes State Beach at the end of Geoffroy Drive in Santa Cruz. Neighbors said the gate has helped to prevent crime and other problems. But beach-goers said blocking public access to a public beach violates state law.

Santa Cruz Church
The Santa Cruz Catholic Church on 6th Ave and 22nd Street in Tucson celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2019. The Spanish colonial revival building and its distinctive 90-foot bell tower were designed by Bishop Henri Granjon, who reportedly chose the location because he liked to hunt rabbits in the area. When construction began the church was on the southern edge of Tucson’s city limits and was meant to serve the growing Hispanic population on the south side. The church has a deep architectural, spiritual and cultural history that charts Tucson’s growth over the last century.
