Loma Prieta Earthquake 1989 Santa Cruz: 1987 Official Warning
KGO-TV Air date: Feb. 26, 1987. More than 2 1/2 years before the Loma Prieta earthquake, Santa Cruz chief building official David Steeves reported to the city council that many downtown buildings would collapse in an earthquake. Steeves surveyed the buildings as part of a state law seeking to identify and retrofit unreinforced masonry structures. His recommendations were harshly criticized by some property and business owners, and the city council shelved his report. Steeves soon resigned, privately expressing frustration and disgust. Postscript: On Oct. 17, 1989, many of the buildings seen in this 1987 report either collapsed or were severely damaged, including at least 27 of the 46 buildings Steeves cited. Three people were killed. One, at Ford's Department Store, and two others at the Santa Cruz Coffee Roasting Company when the brick wall of Bookshop Santa Cruz collapsed on them. Several days after the quake, and long after he quit his city job, Steeves and I walked up what was left of the former Pacific Garden Mall. I asked if he had heard from anyone in city government since the quake hit. He said he happened to run into the city manager, who had no comment or reaction when Steeves said, I told you so. The companion piece to this story aired on Oct. 19, 1989, available here: David Steeves died in 1999.

Santa Cruz Mountains
The Santa Cruz Mountains rise between San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean along the San Andreas Fault. Big Basin, Castle Rock and Ana Nuevo are among the many state parks and public open spaces in the region. From Half Moon Bay to Monterey Bay, an array of wildlife make their home on the California coast.
Shopping Santa Cruz California
Shopping Santa Cruz California - Capitola Village is the quintessential beach town. Nestled on the South end of Santa Cruz right on the sand it is one of my favorite places to ride my bike to and just people watch. People come here from all over the world. In the heart of Summer all you hear are foreign languages. In the few hours it took me to take these photos, I heard an Asian language, Dutch, German and French being spoken amongst vacationing families. The ultimate vacation spot is in Capitola. You can surf, boogie board, paddle board, frolic in the ocean, visit the wharf to listed to live music or have a bite to eat at the Wharf House. Another option is to rent a fishing boat off the wharf and go out and hook some halibut, or perch or even a great white shark these days. If you want a cool place to visit come to Capitola. Dont miss the Capitola Art & Wine Festival or the last Capitola Begonia Festival happening this September.
Dover Oildraulic Elevator at Pacific Inn in Santa Cruz, CA
This is probably a late 1980s Dover elevator, because of the smooth instead of clicky feel when pressing the buttons, and the roundback Dover logo. The fixtures on this elevator are not holding up very well. They look fine, but at least 3 of the buttons are very unresponsive. Dover older Impulse fixtures. The indicator is not working at all. This elevator is very easy to access. I entered through a side door, and started on the top floor, away from the lobby.

The San Francisco Earthquake Of 1989
The 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake occurred in Northern California on October 17 at 5:04 p.m. local time (1989-10-18 00:04 UTC). The shock was centered in The Forest of Nisene Marks State Park approximately 10 mi (16 km) northeast of Santa Cruz on a section of the San Andreas Fault System and was named for the nearby Loma Prieta Peak in the Santa Cruz Mountains. With a moment magnitude of 6.9 and a maximum Mercalli intensity of IX (Violent), the shock was responsible for 63 deaths and 3,757 injuries. The Loma Prieta segment of the San Andreas Fault System had been relatively inactive since the 1906 San Francisco earthquake (to the degree that it was designated a seismic gap) until two moderate foreshocks occurred in June 1988 and again in August 1989.

San Jose - A City To See (1972)
This student/amateur film by Louis Ventura, Jr. is a time capsule of San Jose in 1972. With a low-key, one-take voice-over and the Shaft theme as background music, it's an unusual but fascinating historic document of a growing, developing city and its recreational attractions. Aerial views of the city provided on a flight by Cliff Hodges from Aero Trends at Reid-Hillview Airport, film of the rides in Frontier Village, shots inside the Beautiful Eastridge Mall, and shots of PSA and TWA planes at San Jose Municipal Airport are unusual scenes. For the making of this film, Mr. Ventura also visited the San Jose Municipal Rose Garden, Alum Rock Park, Backesto Park, the Rosicrucian Museum, Vasona Park, Oak Meadow Park, William Street Park, and the Winchester Mystery House. Though he may be perpetuating a false story about Sarah Winchester's beliefs, it was the theme-park story of the day to say she thought building the house would gain her immortality. Overall, this film is a glimpse into San Jose's past that we seldom see, but many will remember.

QUIET 1998 US Soft Touch Hydraulic Rear Employee Elevator @ Ralphs Pacific Beach, CA
Strange enough this one is SUPER QUIET, no floor passing sounds or chimes whatsoever!!! There was a BIG dock freight with bi-parting doors which I did not do since I was here for a secondary job interview I could not push my luck. This one is basic but very nice though. Installed in 1998.
