Rim Drive Tour, Crater Lake National Park
It's a rare treat to drive the entire circle around Crater Lake -- the road is only open for a few months out of the year. This drive takes you around the entire loop, and lets you see the view from most of the best viewpoints.
Want to see the rear-view?
You may notice the views are somewhat hazy. My visit in August, 2015, happened while a large wildfire was burning near the park's north entrance. Sunny days are usually more clear than this!
MyDrivelapse.com and Takemytrip.com provide driving videos and stories to help you plan your trip. Check out hundreds of videos on my YouTube channel. Subscribe if you like it! Dozens of new videos are on the way in the coming weeks.

Hit up this National park in August of this year( 2015). Wow, what a great place. Only issue we had was the video quality could have been better but there were some fires burning in the area so it was a little hazy out there.
Crater Lake National Park, Oregon Ruff Road Review
We visited the deepest lake in the United States! Also, it is one of the most purest bodies of water in the world! What is this place? It's Crater Lake National Park. Crater Lake is in southern Oregon and was created from a volcanic eruption 7,700 years ago. It's purity rating is due to no inflow from streams. It is fed by rain and snow. The water is deep blue, clear, and cold. It is hands down one of the most awe inspiring places that we've seen.
We arrived at Crater Lake's very crowded Rim Village to meet family in July. The drive there is 38 miles from Collier Memorial State Park where we were staying. After the hellos and hugs, we walked around the area and got our first look at the blue, blue water of Crater Lake. Then we headed off to drive the Rim Drive.
Along the drive, which circles Crater Lake, there are many scenic pull off areas. Some of these areas have short trails or viewing decks to get different vantage points. Even though it was the fourth of July weekend, we were able to find parking places along the pull outs and see what we wanted to see. There was still snow on the ground here and there which made for some fun snow play. We were here three years ago and there was snow everywhere. In fact, it was snowing. That was June. So heads up, if you are planning a summer trip, know that May and June can have snow that could affect your views and services within the park.
Crater Lake's website has all of the information you need to plan your visit and learn about the park. They publish two newspapers each year which you can access online. One is for summer and fall, the other one is for winter and spring. May and June are not included in these publications, but you can read about them on the website. Also, any closures or alerts are listed on the website's homepage. There are two campgrounds within the park and two motels. Reservations ahead of time are recommended especially during peak summer months. The park has two visitor centers, Rim Village and Steel. You can view a 22 minute film about the history and formation of Crater Lake at the Steel Visitor Center. If you are hungry, there is a little cafe at the Rim Village Visitor Center. Both visitor centers have gift shops.
Crater Lake National Park website:
There are things to do here besides drive the Rim Drive. You can hike, bike, picnic, swim (brrrr), fish, take a trolley tour, take a boat tour. There are also winter activities within the park. Check the website and the corresponding newspaper for the time you plan to visit. Want to take your dog? Check the website to see where they are allowed. They are allowed in the park, but are restricted to certain areas and specific trails. We saw a lot of dogs while we were there.
If we were to go again, what would we do differently? Well, we both agree that we would take the boat tour to Wizard Island. There we could walk around the island and touch the cool, blue water. Another thing that I would do is hit some of the 90+ miles of hiking trails in the park. In fact, the Pacific Crest Trail runs through the park.
If you are planning a trip to the park, one day is all you need if you are just visiting the visitor centers and driving the Rim Drive. You might consider more than a day if you are interested in the tours, biking, hiking, swimming, or fishing. If you decide to swim, know that this water is chilly, in the 50s we were told. Another reason to consider more than one day is the weather. The first time we visited, we only had one day and the entire area was covered in clouds. We could only catch a foggy glimpse of the lake when the clouds briefly parted a couple times. So, more than one day provides that flexibility if needed.
All in all, we had a great visit to Crater Lake National Park. The pictures can't fully capture the grandeur of this place. We just may be back one day...

Crater Lake Car Extraction
Rope rescue teams from Corvallis, Eugene, Deschutes, Douglas, Jackson and Josephine Counties worked with the Crater Lake National Park rangers to extract debris in the caldera caused by an auto accident. Detritus was collected in a litter and brought to the road level multiple times. Recovery of this material required excellent team work to safely lower people over 1,000 feet from the crater rim to pick up the scattered material piece by piece and then haul man and material back up. Deep and Blue - Crater Lake National Park
Our road trip continues at Crater Lake National Park in Oregon which has the deepest, blue lake in the United States after a volcano had erupted in 5700 BC. Check out our visit at:
It’s hard not to be sidetracked by amazing sights on a road trip. You want to keep stopping and explore. Well, Lex and I couldn’t resist stopping by the side of the road when we were driving to Crater Lake National Park. We just had to walk into the forest and experience it.
Upon closer look, we started walking and crunching on old dead leaves, branches, encountering dead tree trunks, fallen trees, and pine cones. I felt like we were walking on a huge vat of corn flakes. It was a reminder on how Mother Nature is pretty much a recycling operation: creating mulch for the next generation of trees and plants. Carefully crunching my way through the mulch, I finally encountered one of the massive Sequoias. I went up to it and felt its rough trunk and the grooves in the bark. Looking up, I felt dizzy. It was so tall! The tree stretched to the sky and the branches splayed out to where you could see bits of the sky in between. It was a transcendent experience!
There were hardly any cars on the road so I couldn’t resist crossing it like a goofball.
Finally, we arrived at Crater Lake National Park! Whoa! There were a lot of cars and not a lot of parking left. We managed to squeeze into one space a bit far off from the visitor’s center but we didn’t care because we were here and we saw the magnificent deep blue color that the lake is famous for.
Prince Albert II of Monaco once visited Crater Lake and said “I’ve been to over 150 countries in the world and I’ve never seen anything like this.” Well, Lex and I haven’t been to that many or even half that many places, but we certainly agree with him.
Crater Lake National Park was established in 1902 and is the only national park in Oregon. The “crater” is actually known as a caldera in which when the sides of a volcano collapses into the magma chamber during its eruption. The eruption that created the caldera occurred around 5700 BC when Mount Mazama became active. This explosive eruption produced more than 150 times the ash created by the May 18, 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens.
The incomparable deep blue lake has no other streams flowing in or out. It is filled by rain and snow. It is the deepest lake in the United States and the ninth deepest in the world. There is fish in the lake but they are not native and were introduced during 1888 to 1941.
You can actually swim in the lake but I can’t swim and Lex said it was friggin’ cold. I wonder if the Prince ever tried it. Maybe next time!

I-5 to Crater Lake, Part 3: Oregon Route 62 to South Entrance
This drive finishes up the three-part series of videos, taking you from I-5 at Roseburg to the south entrance of Crater Lake National Park. This drive starts at Trail, Oregon, at the junction of 62 and 227, and follows 62 northeast to the south entrance of the park.
Yes, it would have been quicker to drive from Roseburg to the North Entrance, but it was closed due to a wildfire. You'll notice the smoke (and some roadblocks) along the way.
