West Coast Meets the Mediterranean Coast in Santa Barbara, California

West Coast meets the Mediterranean Coast in Santa Barbara.
The region’s unusual south-facing coastline contributes to the balmy temperatures and sunshine evocative of the Riviera, owing to its nickname: the American Riviera.
Situated 90 miles north of Los Angeles, Santa Barbara was the original movie-making capital. Before there was a Hollywood motion picture industry, Santa Barbara was home to silent film studios in the early 1900s. These days, celebrities, writers and producers may not be making movies here but they are making homes here. The area, from the Pacific coastline to the hills of the Santa Ynez Mountains, is populated with A-listers.
The lifestyle is relaxed. Downtown Santa Barbara’s famous brick-lined State Street is loaded with sidewalk cafes, little boutiques and restored theaters. Navigating it by foot is encouraged. Foodies and oenophiles are right at home. An “urban wine trail,” located in an industrial neighborhood-turned-arts-district called the Funk Zone, features tasting rooms representing some of the county’s top wineries.
Stunning estates abound, near the beach or on a bluff. Spanish colonial revival and mission revival marked by arched facades, wrought-iron embellishments, white washed exteriors and red tiled roofs dominate the architecture. Sprinkled among them are late 19th century Victorian homes and classic California bungalows along Santa Barbara’s downtown stretch.
Just to the east are the coastal communities of Montecito, the quiet retreat of the elite with its own private beach, and Carpentaria with its surf-town feel. Less than an hour from the coast in the Santa Ynez Valley are colorful locales like Solvang, the “Danish Capital” of North America and the cowboy town of Santa Ynez. A decade ago, the area got a huge tourism boast from the hit movie, “Sideways,” which was filmed here. It’s prime wine and equine territory. The Santa Ynez Valley is another area of Santa Barbara County that marquee names flock to--or did. It’s the site of Michael Jackson’s famous Neverland Ranch as well as Ronald Reagan’s Rancho del Cielo.

TIPS FOR VISITING THE CHANNEL ISLANDS & SANTA BARBARA You should make sure that you give yourself at least three to four days to visit and explore the Channel Islands National Park, Ventura, and Santa Barbara. If you are traveling with kids that are a bit older and like the outdoors, you should really think about camping overnight on the Channel Islands. After the last boat leaves, which could be around 6pm depending on the season, you will have the island almost to yourselves. You just have to pay a small fee in order to stay on the island and there are limited services and facilities so you need to pack in and pack out. In order to get out onto the Channel Islands you will need to book a boat ride through Island Packers. The prices will change depending on the season, so make sure to check on that if you are trying to budget and plan in advance. The boat will make stops at the four different islands and you will get off the boat when you get to the island that you want to visit. There are great kayak tours on the islands, as well as some great opportunities for snorkeling. For information and booking you will need to go to Channel Island Adventure Company. You can also find some great hiking trails. You will also need to keep in mind that if you plan on visiting the Channel Islands, whether it is for the day or overnight, you will need to pack food and supplies. There are no cafes on the islands. Reagan Presidential Library is only about 30 minute away from Ventura. So if you like history at all and need a break from being outside, this is a really nice place to visit. You can also have some fun with a day on the beach or even just a relaxing afternoon. Black Sheep restaurant in Santa Barbara offers a chef's tasting menu that is great for a date night. FAVORITE TRAVEL GEAR Travis loves to wear his Old Navy Sweatpants when he travels. Especially loves that they have zippers on the pockets to keep his wallet and phone in place.

Santa Barbara's reservoir will be mostly dry by summer. So the city is considering an expensive alte
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP) - This seaside city thought it had the perfect solution the last time California withered in a severe drought more than two decades ago: Tap the ocean to turn salty seawater to fresh water.
The $34 million desalination plant was fired up for only three months and mothballed after a miracle soaking of rain.
As the state again grapples with historic dryness, the city nicknamed the American Riviera has its eye on restarting the idled facility to hedge against current and future droughts.
We were so close to running out of water during the last drought. It was frightening, said Joshua Haggmark, interim water resources manager. Desalination wasn't a crazy idea back then.
Removing salt from ocean water is not a far-out idea, but it's no quick drought-relief option. It takes years of planning and overcoming red tape to launch a project.
Santa Barbara is uniquely positioned with a desalination plant in storage. But getting it humming again won't be as simple as flipping a switch.
After the plant was powered down in 1992, the city sold off parts to a Saudi Arabia company. The guts remain as a time capsule - a white elephant of sorts - walled off behind a gate near the Funk Zone, a corridor of art galleries, wineries and eateries tucked between the Pacific and U.S. 101.
The city estimates that it will need $20 million in technological upgrades, a cost likely to be borne by ratepayers. Any restart would require city council approval, which won't vote until next spring after reviewing engineering plans and drought conditions.
Santa Barbara, population 89,000, has enough water for this year and even next year by buying supplemental supplies and as long as residents continue to conserve.
While it may seem like a head-scratcher to put the plant in hibernation soon after it was built, officials said the decision saved the city millions of dollars in unnecessary operating costs.
With the current drought likely to continue, they now appear as if they will be able to cash in on their insurance policy, said Tom Pankratz, editor of Water Desalination Report and consultant on several other desalination projects in California.
The cyclical nature of droughts has made it difficult, if not impossible, to bet on desalination. It requires prime coastal real estate and the foresight to diversify the water supply in flush and dry times. Communities that choose desalination may be more resilient to inevitable droughts in the future.
Santa Barbara relies on water piped through tunnels from the Santa Ynez Mountains. But with Lake Cachuma, the main reservoir, dangerously low, the city expects desalination to play a role.
We live in a desert. We can expect droughts. It's just inevitable that desalination is going to become a part of our regular water portfolio, Haggmark said.
Santa Barbara is not alone in mulling desalination as parched conditions persist for a third straight year, forcing some rural places to ration water and farmers to fallow fields.
Earlier this year, the agency that delivers water to the central coast town of Cambria voted to approve an emergency desalination plant with the hopes of getting it running by July before water supplies dry up.
Instead of drawing ocean water, the proposed $5 million plant would pull brackish water from a well, treat it and reinject it into the aquifer. Since that would require a lengthy study, the plant likely won't be able to go online until fall.
Not long ago, there was a rush to quench California's growing thirst with seaside desalination plants. Currently, there are about a dozen proposed projects, according to the California Coastal Commission, which is charged with permitting the facilities.

Pacific Coast Highway - Santa Barbara to Cambria Day 2
On day 2 of our Pacific Coast Highway journey, we take some time to check out Santa Barbara on a couple of beach cruisers. We rode the trails of Shoreline Drive and went back east past Stearns Wharf to Chase Palm Park, where we browsed The Santa Barbara Arts and Crafts Show held every Sunday. We rode even further into downtown Santa Barbara, through an area called The Funk Zone, an art community filled with unique restaurants and small retailers. We checked out of Eagle Inn and stopped in to see Mission Santa Barbara before heading to our next destination.
We drove to Pismo State Beach, the only stretch of coastline in Central California where cars are allowed. There's a vehicle entrance where we would stop and play called Grover Beach. We didn't want to risk getting stuck in our front-wheel drive Toyota Corolla rental, but we were still able to explore its sandy beaches and freezing cold ocean waters on foot. We ate award winning clam chowder at one of the oldest Pismo Beach Restaurants called Splash Cafe.
We continued north and arrived in Morro Bay just before sundown. Driving down the hill to Morro Rock was an experience in itself. We enjoyed the evening with one of the most breathtaking sunsets we'd ever seen.
Next stop on our Pacific Coast Highway drive, the Sea Otter Inn in Cambria, CA.

Tips for visiting Santa Barbara, California
Santa Barbara (Spanish: Santa Bárbara; Spanish for Saint Barbara) is a coastal city in, and the county seat of, Santa Barbara County in the U.S. state of California. Situated on a south-facing section of coastline, the longest such section on the West Coast of the United States, the city lies between the steeply rising Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. Santa Barbara's climate is often described as Mediterranean, and the city has been promoted as the American Riviera. As of 2018, the city had an estimated population of 91,350, up from 88,410 in 2010, making it the second most populous city in the county after Santa Maria. The contiguous urban area, which includes the cities of Goleta and Carpinteria, along with the unincorporated regions of Isla Vista, Montecito, Mission Canyon, Hope Ranch, Summerland, and others, has an approximate population of 220,000. The population of the entire county in 2010 was 423,895.
In addition to being a popular tourist and resort destination, the city economy includes a large service sector, education, technology, health care, finance, agriculture, manufacturing, and local government. In 2004, the service sector accounted for fully 35% of local employment. Education in particular is well-represented, with four institutions of higher learning on the south coast (the University of California, Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara City College, Westmont College, and Antioch University). The Santa Barbara Airport serves the city, Santa Barbara Aviation provides jet charter aircraft, and train service is provided by Amtrak, which operates the Pacific Surfliner (which runs from San Diego to San Luis Obispo). U.S. Highway 101 connects the Santa Barbara area with Los Angeles roughly 100 miles (160 km) to the southeast and San Francisco around 325 miles (525 km) to the northwest. Behind the city, in and beyond the Santa Ynez Mountains, is the Los Padres National Forest, which contains several remote wilderness areas. Channel Islands National Park and Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary are located approximately 20 miles (32 km) offshore.
