Instead of a structured swim, we were given the opportunity to do a natural swim, which is us just going in and swimming in their natural habitat, and essentially being dolphins. It is a powerful swim that has brought many lasting effects to hundreds of people.

Dan and Morgan continue their Florida science retreat in the Florida Keys. Now with the bus of middle schoolers the two begin all of the research and learning fun. This day brings early wakeup and learning to snorkel at a local state park. Next they head to Dolphins Plus to swim with real world dolphins and then they cap the night off with some reef research and Squid dissection for dessert!!

Wounded Warriors Find Therapy in Florida Keys Dolphins and Bike Ride
MARATHON, Florida Keys -- An interactive session with dolphins in the Florida Keys provided unique therapy for more than 40 wounded warriors, during a stop within Soldier Ride, a segmented cycling event down the Keys Overseas Highway that ends Sunday in Key West.
Soldiers swam with dolphins at Dolphin Research Center late Friday afternoon, shared flipper shakes and learned dolphin-training techniques.
For Army 1st Lt. Josh Pitcher, who lost his left leg after an explosion in Afghanistan in April 2012, it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
That was pretty much one of the best things I've ever done with my life, the 24-year-old veteran from Kentucky said.
Pitcher said he felt camaraderie with the dolphins, Tanner and Jax, who also is challenged with missing sections of his dorsal fin and tail.
And I'm an amputee from an explosion from Afghanistan, Pitcher said. It was almost like a bond that we felt in the water, it was pretty cool.
I know they have service dogs and other service animals, but to be around trained dolphins that you know they ain't gonna bite you, they're not going to attack you ... they're just there to play with you ...chill out, it's pretty cool, he said. It's actually very rewarding.
Prior to their dolphin encounter, participants pedaled across the Seven Mile Bridge, the longest span of 42 bridges over water that help comprise the Florida Keys Overseas Highway.
Although many riders are missing one or more limbs after combat injuries, they used hand cycles, trikes and bicycles with state-of-the-art adaptive equipment to participate in the cycling event in support of their injured comrades.
Organized by the Wounded Warrior Project, Soldier Ride's mission is to help injured military personnel restore their physical and emotional well-being through rehabilitative opportunities. It also raises awareness for those warriors who continue to face physical and psychological damages from wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
