Mammoth Lakes is a town in California's Sierra Nevada mountains. It's known for the Mammoth Mountain and June Mountain ski areas and nearby trails. The town is a base for Devils Postpile National Monument, a formation of basalt columns, and the soaring Rainbow Falls. To the north, saltwater Mono Lake is dotted with limestone towers. Yosemite National Park, with its granite cliffs and ancient sequoias, is nearby.
Mammoth Lakes lies on the edge of the Long Valley Caldera. The area around the town is geologically active, with hot springs and rhyolite domes that are less than 1000 years old. Visitors can take State Route 203 from the town of Mammoth Lakes to the Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, over Minaret Summit, then down to Devils Postpile National Monument, with access to the Ansel Adams Wilderness.
The area has natural hot springs which are sometimes used after skiing. Other features include lakes, a soda springs, and an obsidian dome. Mammoth Lakes is north of the Owens Valley, a scenic area with extensive hiking opportunities. The town is surrounded by mountains: on the west, Mammoth Mountain looms over the town, while to the south, the Sherwin Range dominates the view. This hilly terrain and the high altitude makes the area great for high-altitude athletic training, including among elite long-distance runners, who live and train in the thin air.
The town is surrounded by acres of forest and is bordered by the Ansel Adams and John Muir Wilderness Areas. The eastern entrance of Yosemite National Park is located 32 miles (51 km) north of town. The town is situated in the southwestern, mountainous part of Mono County, California.

Mammoth Travel Guide | California Travel Tips
California travel expert Veronica Hill offers a Mammoth Lakes and Mammoth Mountain Travel Guide in this episode of California Travel Tips.
Mammoth Mountain is located 11,000 feet above sea level in the beautiful Sierra Nevada mountains. This central California hideaway, located just east of Yosemite National Park, doesn't get a huge amount of play in guidebooks. But just one visit to this charming mountain village and you'll be hooked.
The Eastern Sierras are legendary for their beauty, and Mammoth is no exception. Though it's best known for its winter sports, Mammoth is just as fun when there's no snow on the ground.
At the Main Lodge Adventure Center, kids can go rock climbing, rush down a quick-moving zip line, or go mountain biking on more than 100 miles of dirt single-track.
This is also where you'll pick up the Reds Meadow Shuttle into the Ansel Adams wilderness, where you can either hike or ride on horseback to beautiful Rainbow Falls.
If you come to Mammoth during the summer, you have to take the gondola ride to the top where you can go hiking, biking and check out a great interpretive center.
At the Sierra Interpretive Center, you'll learn that Mammoth is actually part of an active volcano chain — though the chances of a major eruption are slim. While you're there, pop into the cafe where you can enjoy a sandwich and soda while gazing out at the beautiful Eastern Sierras.
Though there are several great Mammoth hotels to choose from, we always stay at the Village, an alpine resort with great restaurants, super shopping and one of the best pools in town!
The Village at Mammoth condos are right on the slopes, with daily maid service, a spacious lobby and heated swimming pool. Our family has been staying here for years, and we love its convenience to the gondola and village center. If you prefer a hotel, the Westin Mammoth is right across the street.
The Village is also home to some great Mammoth restaurants, including Lulu Mammoth Restaurant and Bar, an outlet of the famous San Francisco eatery. The Old New York Deli and Bagel Shop is a cheap and delicious place to grab breakfast. Another great dining choice is Side Door Cafe, where you can linger over a delicate crepe and glass of fine wine.
While you're there, don't miss the free red trolley rides around town. It's a great way to explore the village and nearby Mammoth Lakes, which boasts some of the best fishing in California.

Driving across Sonora Pass to Mammoth California and Swimming in Mono Lake (Tufa Formations)
We are leaving Yosemite national park and are driving to Mammoth Lakes California. The original idea was to drive across Tioga pass from Yosemite to Mammoth lakes but unfortunately Tioga pass was closed due to 8ft of snow covering the road still. So we had a 4 hour de-tour to Mammoth lakes over Sonora Pass instead.
We had a few things that we wanted to see over the next 2 days one of which was Mono Lake which has rock formations called Tufa's. Tufa's are made up from a chemical reaction from the water inside Mono Lake which is two and a half times saltier than the sea. The fact Mono Lakes salt content is so high means that you will naturally float in the lake so we decided to have a little swim. Simple... Yeah right!
Mammoth is a very nice little town that operates as a Ski resort in the winter and then a summer holidays destination in the Summer months when there is no snow!

Travel Along Route 395 - Re-Edit. ????
This is a re-edit of my previous Trippin Along Route 395 video. I believe that in the previous video the nature shots I took looked washed out compared to what I saw with my own eyes and what my camera actually recorded in its raw footage, therefore this video is not showing the beauty of nature adequately. I re-edited the video from ground up. All original footage is now processed with greatly improved quality settings, which took me the better part of this weekend (September 24 & 25, 2016). Now the video has a vastly improved color accuracy and through a higher bitrate an improved resolution. The video itself is also edited for content, speed and overall fluidity. Please enjoy.
Highway 395 is probably my favorite road in California. It is the road that parallels the Eastern Sierra’s and provides access to some of the best hiking, lakes and adventures you can find in California. I have driven the Southern half of it many times and wanted to compile my top recommendations for stops along a Highway 395 road trip. I hope you will offer additional suggestions to other travelers in the comments below.
Don't forget guys, if you like this video please Like, Favorite, and Share it with your friends to show your support - it really helps me out! If there's something you'd like to see me discussing on my channel, tell me about it!

Mono Lake is located in the Eastern sierras of central California. It is a unique and beautiful place to visit. The 1 mile South Tufa trail shows you everything this amazing place has to offer in a short hike. It's is best to visit Mono Lake when the sun is rising or setting. We filmed this in the evening so you will totally see why I say that. Enjoy the video! For info on this trail
