Trans Pacific Partnership...Trojan horse for global corporate domination?
Laurel Sutherlin, Rainforest Action Network, joins Thom Hartmann. Earlier in the Summer - we told you about The Trans - Pacific Partnership - a new so-called free trade deal that the US has been negotiating over with 8 Pacific nations for the last two years. But rather than helping Americans or improving the American economy - the TPP would give foreign transnational corporations unprecedented power to abuse American workers - pollute our environment - and destabilize our markets. When information on the TPP was first leaked - very few Americans knew what it was - and as a result - there was very little opposition towards it. But fast forward a couple months - and that seems to have changed. This week in Leesburg, Virginia - US trade negotiators met with members of the other 8 TPP nations for the 14th round of negotiations. And - for the first time - the meeting was also met by protestors.

History of the 4-H Center Oregon
The 4-H Center land was purchased from the Stewarts at a reduced cost.
Ivan and Merle Stewart met as students at Oregon Agricultural College (OSU) in Corvallis and were married after he returned from the Marine Corps in 1920.
Ivan went into the seed business and during the 30's began acquiring old homesteads that totaled 720 acres. He was deeply interested in conservation--building ten ponds and planting 200,00 trees, including deer, raccoon, opossum, red fox, grouse, china pheasant, squirrels and song birds.
It also became a collecting place for his life long hobby of collecting rocks and horse-trades for cut and polished stones. The ranch became a show place for their display in fireplaces, walls, and in the resin panels incorporated into the Chapel he built to honor Merle.
In 1968 the 4-H of Oregon with 42,700 youth and leaders acquired the property as a center that would continue and share the love of the land.

FEATURING: Béisbol - beisbol.bandcamp.com/album/real-diamond-ep
Ryan and Jeffery Burian are Béisbol, a progressive pop band currently rooted in Portland, Oregon. The brothers were born and raised in sunny Southern California. Most recently Jeffery was living in the East Bay trying his hand at production, engineering records for friends, collaborating with other musicians, and recording lo-fi electro-pop covers of Four Tops songs. Ryan was in Flagstaff, Arizona where he took on the role of singer/songwriter. He was also exploring recording and mixing techniques and nursing a love for electronic music. As time passed the two realized they wanted the same thing from their lives: to rock. Having gone down different roads and arriving at the same destination, the two got to work on new material, their first real collaborative effort in ten years. They recently completed an EP for which they played every instrument. Written, self-recorded, and mixed in a travel trailer on the side of their parents' house over the course of a month, the Real Diamond EP is slated for digital release in October 2011 with two singles to be released on limited edition 7 vinyl. The duo are currently working tirelessly on their debut full length, Lo-fi Cocaine.
MORE INFO ON CAMPUS 360:
This unique event series is co-presented by various PSU student publications with the intention of providing an artist-first (not crowd) oriented event, to expose under-credited artists, and to strengthen PSU's campus life with united student media outlets. Each event will feature an intimate living room-esque evening concert session with one entertainer. The entertainer will not play on a stage, in the corner of the room, or in a venue layout catering towards floor space. This event requires that the artist perform centered, playing outwards in the middle of the gorgeous Native American Student and Community Center gathering area, and circularly surrounded by an audience. The audience circling around the performer will be able to enjoy the show sitting on the floor with bean bags, yoga mats, and rugs. The audience may also hang out seated in a ring of chairs or standing around the performer. Each PSU student publication group will contribute documenting the event and enriching the available experience for PSU students.

Tuner cars are cars that can be easily modified- or tuned. But what does that mean?! When you change something under the hood, your engine has to be tuned to work with it! This Science Garage looks at the history of “tuning,” from what started as delicate mechanical adjustments, to how it exists today- a marriage between the computer tech of of the future and the forced induction and air/fuel mixes that are as old as cars themselves.
Bart teaches us how cars work by blowing stuff up and cutting things in half. It’s a science show for the car lover who’s easily bored. Join Bart as he explains the science behind everything automotive. This is cars down to the atom. This is Science Garage.

Controversy over Genetic Engineering in Agriculture: The good, the bad, and the righteous
Today's farmers feed more than 7 billion people, and we can trace much of this bounty and efficiency to traditional agricultural technologies, especially plant breeding, fertilizers, and chemical management of soil and weeds — major ingredients of the first Green Revolution. However, population growth and increased demands for higher quality food will require large improvements in agricultural productivity going forward, while we minmize the undesired environmental and social effects of more intense farming systems.
Direct modification of DNA, or genetic engineering, is a new tool for plant breeding that has spread at unprecedented speed over the last two decades. However, it has also come up against strong social and legal resistance in many countries, making its future significance as a tool to promote productivity and sustainability uncertain.
At the Oct. 14 Corvallis Science Pub, Steve Strauss, director of Oregon State University's Outreach in Biotechnology program, will discuss the pros and cons of gene technology for agriculture. He will review what the technology actually is, how it is similar and different from conventional breeding, and how it has impacted agriculture to date. He will also discuss diverse sources of the controversy surrounding it, including the numerous myths and confusing science that pervade the online world. Gene technology is a valuable tool, not a silver bullet, Strauss says. It can do a lot, but it must be used with due caution and as part of integrated, ecologically guided management systems for sustained benefit.
He also argues that it appears capable of providing major humanitarian benefits to the poor by improving nutrition and food security. Despite the fears and growing legal barriers, the stakes in this debate are too high to turn away from. We must find socially acceptable ways to move forward.
Strauss is a distinguished professor in the Oregon State College of Forestry and a Fellow of the Leopold Leadership Program at Stanford University. He is also the director of the Tree Biosafety and Genomics Research Cooperative at OSU that conducts research on mitigation of risks from genetic engineering in forestry.
