Yosemite National Park - Giant Sequoia - Merced Grove
This spectacular tree may be found in Merced Grove. It is unique because it has a large cave on its side that has been charred by fire. No need to worry, these trees need fire to survive. Giant sequoias are amongst the world's largest trees. They may grow over 270 ft. Some tree has been recorded at 311 ft. The oldest known sequoias are 3,500 years old. .

TUOLUMNE SEQUOIA GROVE - YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK
#YosemiteNationalPark #NationalParks #NorthernCalifornia #Tuolumne #Merced #Mariposa #SequoiaGroves #SequoiaTrees #JeepLife
There are three Sequoia groves in Yosemite National Park – Tuolumne, Merced, and Mariposa groves. We were able to visit two of them during our stay – Tuolumne and a short stop at Mariposa on our way home. This is a look at one of the groves.
We camped for two nights at Crane Flats Campground in Yosemite National Park. Not far from our campground is the Tuolumne Sequoia Grove. We drove the short distance to the parking lot of the grove and started our hike.
Tuolumne Grove is at an elevation of 6,200 feet and the trail is 3.2 miles round trip. It is a chilly October morning as we begin our hike.
Sequoia Trees
Sequoia trees are rare trees and only grow along a narrow strip on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountains. They are found at an elevation of 5,000 to 7,000 feet. Giant Sequoias are among the oldest trees in the world and can live up to 3,000 years.
Giant Sequoias are fire-resistant and insect-resistant because of their thick bark. They are tall trees, but normally 300 feet is as tall as most of them grow. They are also massive in size and until recently the Giant Sequoia named “General Sherman” was thought to be the largest organism on the planet.
Shallow Root System
One downside to the Giant Sequoia trees is that they have a wide, but shallow root system. Because of this many are toppled by a combination of heavy rains and strong winds. An otherwise healthy Sequoia tree can be easily toppled by a severe weather storm.
Another problem is people walking too close to the trees can inadvertently kill the root system and make them more vulnerable to toppling.
Interesting Trees
There are two unique dead trees in the park – one has a tunnel cut through it and you can walkthrough the tunnel. The top of the tree is missing, however. Another fallen Giant Sequoia tree you can walk through it, as the inside has been hollowed out.
Conclusion
Tuolumne Grove was a great stop to hike and to see the Giant Sequoias, as well as to read about some of the features and history of the Sequoias. The Giant Sequoias trees and the Sierra Nevada Mountains seemed to be made for each other!
We will see YOU on the next adventure!

Yosemite National Park Video Tour
Yosemite National Park is a national park is in the U.S. state of California. The park covers an area of 747,956 acres and reaches across the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountain range.About 4 million people visit Yosemite each year. Yosemite isrecognized for its granite cliffs, waterfalls, clear streams, giant sequoia groves, lakes, mountains, glaciers.Almost 95% of the park is wilderness.John Muir led a successful movement to establish a larger national park encompassing not just the valley, but surrounding mountains and forests as well—paving the way for the United States national park system.
Yosemite is one of the largest and least fragmented habitat blocks in the Sierra Nevada, the park supports a diversity of plants and animals. The park has an elevation range from 2,127 to 13,114 feet (648 to 3,997 m) and contains five major vegetation zones: woodland, lower montane forest, upper montane forest, subalpine zone, and alpine. In California's 7,000 plant species, about 50% occur in the Sierra Nevada and more than 20% within Yosemite. There is suitable habitat for more than 160 rare plants in the park.
Almost all of the landforms in the Yosemite area are cut from the granitic rock of the Sierra Nevada Batholith. The Tunnel View is the first view of the Valley for many visitors and is extensively photographed. El Capitan, a granite cliff that looms over Yosemite Valley, is one of the most popular rock climbing destinations in the world because of its diverse range of climbing routes in addition to its year-round accessibility. Granite domes such as Sentinel Dome and Half Dome rise 3,000 and 4,800 feet above the valley floor.
The high country of Yosemite contains beautiful areas such as Tuolumne Meadows, Dana Meadows and more. The park has three groves of ancient giant sequoia trees; the Mariposa Grove (200 trees), the Tuolumne Grove (25 trees), and the Merced Grove (20 trees). This species grows larger in volume than any other and is one of the tallest and longest-lived.Yosemite is famous for its high concentration of waterfalls in a small area.
Some of the most visited sites in Yesomite are El Capitan, Half Dome, Vernal falls, the tunnel view, Tuolumne Meadows, cathedral peak, Bridalveil fall,Glacier point, Mariposa Grove of giant sequoia.
California 101: Yosemite National Park
Known for its waterfalls, giant sequoia trees, and sheer granite cliffs, you can spend weeks exploring Yosemite National Park. Watch rock climbers scale the towering El Capitan. Give your adrenaline a break as you float down the Merced River or bliss out in Tuolumne Meadows. Drive through Wawona Tunnel to see the vista from Tunnel View. Take a stroll around the base of Yosemite Falls to work up an appetite for dinner at Majestic Yosemite Hotel’s dining room and then watch the sun set on Half Dome. Experience Yosemite National Park, California
Yosemite National Park covers nearly 1,200 square miles of mountainous terrain in the Sierra Nevada of California. From high peaks and deep canyons to ancient forests and quiet meadows, the diversity of the world is on display here. At Yosemite you can see the tranquillity of the High Sierra, the power of glaciers, giant sequoia groves, thundering waterfalls, clear streams and much more. Designated a World Heritage Site in 1984, Yosemite is also home to hundreds of wildlife and plant species. Two Wild & Scenic Rivers, the Tuolumne and Merced rivers, begin in the park and flow west to the Central Valley. Visitors experience the park's 800 miles of hiking trails and 282 miles of road.
Visitors fall in love with the park's many waterfalls, specifically 2,425-foot Yosemite Falls that ranks as the tallest in North America, flowing down into the scenic Valley meadows. Hikers take notice of the enormous granite mountains from the 8,842-foot Half Dome to the 13,114-foot Mt. Lyell-Yosemite's tallest peak. Glaciers, which John Muir sought out in California as well as Alaska, add into the mix with the Maclure and Lyell still intact.
It is by far the grandest of all the special temples of Nature I was ever permitted to enter. —John Muir
Animals: Yosemite supports more than 400 species of vertebrates, including fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. Overall, the park's widespread coniferous forests--with a relatively mild climate and a mixture of plant species--provide a lush habitat for animals to live. Wildlife species typically found include mule deer, black bear, bobcat, gray fox, mountain kingsnake, Gilbert's skink, white-headed woodpecker, brown creeper, spotted owl, and a wide variety of bat species. Black bears in Yosemite are active both day and night. Most bears that rely on natural food sources are active during the day. However, those that get food from people are often active at night, when they can quietly sneak around and grab unattended food.
Plants: Move up or down in elevation and feel as though you are in another park. Vegetation changes from oak woodlands to chaparral scrublands to lower montane to upper montane to subalpine to alpine. Those who step into the alpine zone can see krummholz whitebark pines and perhaps a western juniper or mountain hemlock. Scientists study many individual plants, including the black oak, to understand its future challenges.
