Niagara Falls, New York: Downtown Driving Tour (Including Niagara Falls State Park)
This driving tour video of Niagara Falls, New York starts at the intersection of Pine Avenue and Hyde Park Boulevard. After passing through Little Italy, we narrowly avoid getting on to the Rainbow Bridge to Canada before traveling through the tourist section and looping around Goat Island (Niagara Falls State Park).
Niagara Falls is, of course, a city across the Niagara River from the city of the same name in Ontario, Canada. The population now sits at 50,000, down sharply from over 100,000 in the 1960's. Evidence of this downslide can be seen at times in the video where blocks sit empty and overgrown where houses once stood.

Niagara Falls. NY and Lockport Hold Gun Buyback Events
NIAGARA COUNTY, N.Y. - At this fire station in Niagara Falls, David Meyers was the first in line to get rid of two guns he had sitting around the house.
I brought in a .22 rifle and a .32 pistol that was given to me by my grandfather, said Meyers.
Meyers, a former probation officer, says he just doesn't have any use for the firearms anymore.
I just wanted to get rid of it. They're working, they're operable and all they're going to do is get stolen at the house or something could happen to them. I just don't have a need for them, said Meyers.
Meyers is just one of dozens of people who came out for Niagara Falls' first ever Gun Buyback. Police Chief Bryan DelPorto says despite its’ critics, gun buy backs do work.
We know it's not a magic bullet to gun violence but if we can take one gun off the street that might be used in a crime down the road then we think the program has been successful, said Chief DelPorto.
Just about 20 miles east in Lockport, more residents lined up to turn in their guns. Police Chief Larry Eggert believes uncertainty over the states tough new guns laws may have contributed to the high turnout.
They're turning in guns that quite frankly might be a little bit more difficult to get rid of in three or four months. So, here it's a no questions asked, hand us the gun and walk away with money. So it's really good deal for us. We get guns off the street and it's a good deal for people because they don't have to worry about the new laws, said Chief Eggert.
As the debate over the states new gun laws continues, these city officials say they'll do whatever they can to make sure these guns don't fall into the wrong hands.
One thing we know is for relatively little financial cost, we're taking guns off the street here today. None of those guns is going to shoot anyone today, said Niagara Falls Mayor Paul Dyster.

Niagara Falls
This is some old video footage of Niagara Falls. The Niagara Falls are made up of 3 waterfalls, the Horseshoe Falls, the American Falls, and the Bridal Veil Falls. The Niagara Falls are located on th Niagara River, which flows from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario in the Great Lakes. The falls are one of the biggest waterfalls in North America and have been a major tourist attraction since the 19th century. The Niagara River and the falls mark the border between Canada (Ontario) and the United States (New York State). Towns on both the Canadian and American sides of the falls are called Niagara Falls.

NIAGARA WATER FALLS
American Falls & Bridal Veil Falls
Length of brink: 1060 feet /323.08 meters
Height: 176 feet / 53.6 meters (due to rocks at the base actual fall is 70 feet/ 21.3 meters)
Volume of water: 150,000 U.S. Gallons / 567,811 Liters per second
Actual amount varies, there are two hydroelectric plants which draw water into their reservoirs prior to the Falls. Their intake greatly affects the volume of water flowing over the falls.
The amount of water being siphoned away depends on two variables. The time of year, and the time of the day. Flow is greatest over the Falls in the daytime during peak tourist season (June, July, and August). In the event of an emergency the flow can be somewhat reduced by the hydroelectric companies increasing their intake.
The Bridal Veil Falls is named for its appearance. It is located next to the American falls, separated by a small piece of land called Luna Island.
Canadian “Horseshoe” Falls
Length of brink: 2600 feet / 792.4 meters
Height: 167 feet / 50.9 meters
Volume of water: 600,000 U.S. gallons / 2,271,247 liters per second
A Brief History of the Falls. Information below graciously provided courtesy of Niagara Parks
Ice Age History of the Niagara River and Whirlpool Rapids
The Niagara River, as is the entire Great Lakes Basin of which the river is an integral part, is a legacy of the last Ice Age. 18,000 years ago southern Ontario was covered by ice sheets 2-3 kilometers thick. As they advanced southward the ice sheets gouged out the basins of the Great Lakes. Then as they melted northward for the last time they released vast quantities of meltwater into these basins. Our water is “fossil water”; less than one percent of it is renewable on an annual basis, the rest leftover from the ice sheets.
The Niagara Peninsula became free of the ice about 12,500 years ago. As the ice retreated northward, its meltwaters began to flow down through what became Lake Erie, the Niagara River and Lake Ontario, down to the St. Lawrence River, and, finally, down to the sea. There were originally 5 spillways from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario. Eventually these were reduced to one, the original Niagara Falls, at Queenston-Lewiston. From here the Falls began its steady erosion through the bedrock.
However, about 10,500 years ago, through an interplay of geological effects including alternating retreats and re-advances of the ice, and rebounding of the land when released from the intense pressure of the ice (isostatic rebound), this process was interrupted. The glacial meltwaters were rerouted through northern Ontario, bypassing the southern route. For the next 5,000 years Lake Erie remained only half the size of today, the Niagara River was reduced to about 10% of its current flow, and a much-reduced Falls stalled in the area of the Niagara Glen.
About 5,500 years ago the meltwaters were once again routed through southern Ontario, restoring the river and Falls to their full power. Then the Falls reached the Whirlpool.
It was a brief and violent encounter, a geological moment lasting only weeks, maybe even only days. In this moment the Falls of the youthful Niagara River intersected an old riverbed, one that had been buried and sealed during the last Ice Age. The Falls turned into this buried gorge, tore out the glacial debris that filled it, and scoured the old river bottom clean. It was probably not a falls at all now but a huge, churning rapids. When it was all over it left behind a 90-degree turn in the river we know today as the Whirlpool, and North America’s largest series of standing waves we know today as the Whirlpool Rapids.
The Falls then re-established at about the area of the Whirlpool Rapids Bridge upriver to our right, and resumed carving its way through solid rock to its present location.
Straddling the Canadian-United States International Border and both in the Province of Ontario and the State of New York, Niagara Falls attracts some 12 Million tourists to her majestic awesome beauty each year.

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y.
(WIVB) - Authorities in Niagara Falls delivered a direct hit in the war on drugs in a crackdown that stretched across the city, busting three suspected drug houses along the way.
Citizen complaints led to the search warrants, which were executed on Valentine's Day.
Niagara Falls Police Capt. James DeMarco said, They recovered some crack cocaine, a quantity of marijuana and we did recover a gun. And guns off the street are always good.
Narcotics detectives raided a building on Ashland Avenue, which was in deplorable condition according to the police report. The structure was condemned by city inspectors.
One of the places had been used not only to sell narcotics but it was also a place where people were smoking crack cocaine. So it was a place that we needed to not only get those people out of there but to board it up, Capt. DeMarco said.
Search warrants were also executed in the 500 block of Memorial Parkway, and a location on Falls Street near 24th. Police say they uncovered a small marijuana growing operation inside an apartment.
Mayor Paul Dyster credits residents with calling in tips.
We believe that the strength of the police department ultimately begins with its roots in the community, Dyster said. For every one of these drug houses that we take down, there are a hundred or more neighbors that are ready to high-five us because we made a difference in their lives.
But police say these types of investigations take time. Just because you don't see a police response the next day doesn't mean they're not on it, building a case.
Capt. DeMarco said, As we get more complaints we'll keep looking at these places. And then of course the narcotics people will prioritize, and we'll take them down as we can.
These are quality of life issues, according to Dyster, and he says every time police make a dent, it's a victory. Dyster says this is just the start of a renewed emphasis on these issues.

We head to both a charming French Bistro and the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute for some good eats. Plus, for some more cultural and history come along as we visit Old Fort Niagara and then head on a Lockport Locks Boat Cruise along the hand dug Erie Canal.
Quick Niagara Falls New York USA Drive through
A brief drive through the city of Niagara Falls, New York USA. Just a sample vid of our upcoming ratchet tourism video for NF NY! So stay tuned!!
I drove through the WORST parts of Buffalo, New York. This is what I saw.
Buffalo has some REALLY bad areas!
We begin this video tour in a completely different country - in Canada, our neighbor to the north. We’ll spend a minute or so showing you the drive into the Buffalo region, show you a little bit of downtown, and then take a drive into the worst area of Buffalo I could find.
The day was Wednesday, January 8, 2020 at about 11 am.
To get into Buffalo you have to cross at the US/Canadian border at Niagara Falls. There’s actually two Niagara Falls’’’’ - one on the Canadian side, and one on the US side. And Buffalo is over here, about 20 minutes away.
The Canadian side of Niagara Falls is very touristy, clean and offers a far better view of the falls. Here’s a 5 second look. It’s somewhat underwhelming, and in the wintertime, quite chilly.
Then you have the US side of Niagara Falls, called Niagara Falls, New York, which is pretty much a dump.
Here’s the scene on main street in Niagara Falls New York. And here’s what one block of Niagara Falls looks like.
People in Buffalo say they are embarrassed of the way Niagara Falls looks, and that they hope one day, it gets cleaned up, because it’s a shame that the first thing you see when you drive into the US from Canada at this location is….THIS.
We drove into Buffalo from this destitute dive, a drive which took about 21 minutes.
Here in Buffalo, the temperature was about 23 degrees, but it felt like zero. The wind was shopping and light snow fell throughout the day. I think it actually lightly flurries here just about every day due to the lake effect. blizzards regularly shut the city down completely.
But locals said this was nothing, and several asked very poingently why we were traveling to Buffalo in the middle of winter.
While observing the snowfall, I remembered I still carried the dim sum dumpling I had hidden deep in my pocket in Toronto.
Buffalo is a pretty cool place - the downtown area is old and somewhat basic, holding onto the rust belt stigma I had expected to see. The best part are the local neighborhoods, which are actually within walking distance from downtown. Among older homes are neighborhood bars and restaurants. It’s like a big city with a small town feel.
Since I was in Buffalo I asked where the best Buffalo wings were. I was sent to a small place called Gabriel’s Gate. The wings were so good, I forgot to take a picture until they were gone. (ding)
We also met people at a place called founding fathers. Theyre big trump supporters bell ding. Everyone was nice here. In fact, the neighborhood bars were full of friendly people, who were good spirited, even during a windy, gray middle of winter day.
Now, the ghetto part. Oh we found the hoods. No, Not here. These are abandoned projects just outside of downtown. The REALLY bad area is on Buffalo’s lower east side.
We criss crossed into the Buffalo neighborhoods of Emslie, Broadway Fillmore and Lovejoy. It’s a smallish city, Buffalo is, with a population that’s dwindled to 250,000 people. At its height, Buffalo’s population was nearly 600,000 people up until the late 50s. Buffalo’s main advantage was water. But after technology improve in the mid 1900s, people didn’t need water for transportation or power. So many people left the Buffalo area. More left when steel mills and car makers left.
Now, it’s one of the 20 most quickly deteriorating regions in the nation.
These neighborhoods are gritty, ugly, and dangerous. This part of town was home to poor immigrants originally, and now has become the part of Buffalo that truly looks as bad as you can imagine, with blocks containing more vacant lots than houses.
The reason we chose this neighborhood was the way it was described on an obscure forum called Cyburbia. In a thread devoted to Buffalo neighborhoods, we saw this and knew this was the neighborhood we’d visit.
Here it is in all its glory.

Niagara Falls
about this video =-
Niagara Falls is a group of three waterfalls at the southern end of Niagara Gorge, between the Canadian province of Ontario and the US state of New York. The largest is Horseshoe Falls, also known as Canadian Falls, which straddles the international border between Canada and the United States.[1] The smaller American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls lie entirely within the United States. Bridal Veil Falls are separated from Horseshoe Falls by Goat Island and from American Falls by Luna Island.

flow rate85,000 cu ft/s (2,400 m3/s)
Located on the Niagara River, which drains Lake Erie into Lake Ontario, the combined falls have the highest flow rate of any waterfall in North America that has a vertical drop of more than 50 metres (160 ft). During peak daytime tourist hours, more than 168,000 m3(six million cubic feet) of water goes over the crest of the falls every minute.[2] Horseshoe Falls is the most powerful waterfall in North America, as measured by flow rate.[3]
The falls are 27 kilometres (17 mi) north-northwest of Buffalo, New York, and 121 kilometres (75 mi) south-southeast of Toronto, between the twin cities of Niagara Falls, Ontario, and Niagara Falls, New York. Niagara Falls was formed when glaciers receded at the end of the Wisconsin glaciation(the last ice age), and water from the newly formed Great Lakes carved a path through the Niagara Escarpment en route to the Atlantic Ocean.
Niagara Falls is famed both for its beauty and as a valuable source of hydroelectric power. Balancing recreational, commercial, and industrial uses has been a challenge for the stewards of the falls since the 19th century.
CharacteristicsEdit

The Canadian Horseshoe Falls

American Falls (large waterfall on the left) and Bridal Veil Falls (smaller waterfall on the right)
The Horseshoe Falls drop about 57 metres (187 ft),[4] while the height of the American Falls varies between 21 and 30 metres (69 and 98 ft) because of the presence of giant boulders at its base. The larger Horseshoe Falls are about 790 metres (2,590 ft) wide, while the American Falls are 320 metres (1,050 ft) wide. The distance between the American extremity of the Niagara Falls and the Canadian extremity is 3,409 feet (1,039 m).
The peak flow over Horseshoe Falls was recorded at 6,400 cubic metres (230,000 cu ft) per second.[5] The average annual flow rate is 2,400 cubic metres (85,000 cu ft) per second.[6] Since the flow is a direct function of the Lake Erie water elevation, it typically peaks in late spring or early summer. During the summer months, at least 2,800 cubic metres (99,000 cu ft) per second of water traverses the falls, some 90% of which goes over the Horseshoe Falls, while the balance is diverted to hydroelectric facilities. This is accomplished by employing a weir – the International Control Dam – with movable gates upstream from the Horseshoe Falls. The falls' flow is further halved at night, and, during the low tourist season in the winter, remains a minimum of 1,400 cubic metres (49,000 cu ft) per second. Water diversion is regulated by the 1950 Niagara Treaty and is administered by the International Niagara Board of Control (IJC).[7]
The verdant green colour of the water flowing over the Niagara Falls is a byproduct of the estimated 60 tonnes/minute of dissolved salts and rock flour (very finely ground rock) generated by the erosive force of the Niagara River itself.[8]
GeologyEdit
The features that became Niagara Falls were created by the Wisconsin glaciation about 10,000 years ago. The same forces also created the North American Great Lakes and the Niagara River. All were dug by a continental ice sheet that drove through the area, deepening some river channels to form lakes, and damming others with debris.[9]Scientists argue there is an old valley, St David's Buried Gorge, buried by glacial drift, at the approximate location of the present Welland Canal.

When the ice melted, the upper Great Lakes emptied into the Niagara River, which followed the rearranged topography across the Niagara Escarpment. In time, the river cut a gorge through the north-facing cliff, or cuesta. Because of the interactions of three major rock formations, the rocky bed did not erode evenly. The top rock formation was composed of erosion-resistant limestone and dolomite of the Lockport Formation. That hard layer of stone eroded more slowly than the underlying materials. The aerial photo on the right clearly shows the hard caprock, the Lockport Formation (Middle Silurian), which underlies the rapids above the falls, and approxi
