Santa Barbara Urban Wine Trail
Santa Barbara's Urban Wine Trail is unique. Follow it and you get to explore Santa Barbara from elegant State Street and the historic El Paseo shopping center where you will find Grassini, Au Bon Climat and Margerum, to the outskirts of the Funk Zone where Carr resides in it's Quonsit hut making you feel like you've walked right into a barrel. Cross the train tracks and stop by AVA Santa Barbara where you can taste wines from all the AVA's in the area and see the huge Elkpen mural mapping out the unique climate, soils and history of the AVA's. Stroll down the block and stop at Santa Barbara Winery one of the very first in this area. Anacapa Street is teaming with tasting rooms like Oreana, Kunin and of course Municipal Wine Makers which looks like a dive shop and has a wall of filing cabinets. As you stroll between the tasting rooms take in the Funk zone with it's murals and small artist shops and galleries. The Santa Barbara Surf Museum is there as well as plenty of surfboard and dive shops. Keep walking and you will hit the beach. Grab a segway or a bike or just walk the beach. Head out on to the wharf and visit the Aquarium or just enjoy watching the fishermen. Stop by Conway Family Vineyards Deep Sea tasting room with a 2nd story patio to enjoy the view with a glass of wine. Don't miss sunset at the end of the wharf and the parade of boats returning to the marina. It makes for a perfect day...although 2 would be even better.
Oreana Winery's Beaver Moon Harvest Festival
Oreana Winery in Santa Barbara will revive the legendary Beaver Moon Rocktoberfest Party it was once famous for on Saturday September 29th at 6:00PM with live music by Spencer the Gardener, gourmet food trucks and new wines pressed right on site. This is not your average winemaker dinner, in fact, there are foodtrucks. This is a celebration of winemaking in a festival like setting.
In ancient times every full moon had its own name based on the crop that was being harvested at the time. This includes things
like beaver. The Beaver Moon occurs in September, presumably to celebrate the slaughter of, well, beavers...
At any rate, we got out of that business a while ago and now it's just wine here at Oreana. Those of you who have hung out here know that the only thing we do better than make wine is throw a party. The winemaking cellar will be wide open for informal tours and
participation events such as hands-on punchdowns and barrel samples of wine that has yet to go into the bottle. If Mother Nature cooperates, we will also be crushing grapes and pressing off our new Pinot Noir, Syrah and Zinfandel.
ADMISSION IS FREE, Wines are available for purchase by the glass in addition to Beaver Blood our wine-based sangria. The event starts at 6:00 PM and runs until 10:00 p.m. Oreana Winery is located at 205 Anacapa Street, two blocks from the beach and two blocks off of State Street in downtown Santa Barbara. The tasting room phone number is 805.962.5857.
