A Salty Passion: Hi! We are Ryan (RumShopRyan) and Crystal (Castaway Crystal), we document, photograph, and film the best the Caribbean has to offer. Whether it’s stunning beaches, relaxing hotels, friendly restaurants, or soggy beach bars…we want to share it and inspire others to explore the islands.
MEET US!
Who Is RumShopRyan:
Howdy! I’m Ryan and I hail from the land-locked, can’t get any further from the ocean, state of Kansas. I moved to laid back southwest Florida in 2001. I didn’t know a single person and didn’t have a job. Risky I know, but the ocean was calling and I had to answer.
I’m a huge fan of Kansas City sports, so you’ll probably see a lot of Jayhawks, Chiefs and Royals attire in my photos. Kansas City is a great town and I’m glad I’m from there, but the coastal life was calling. It’s kind of like Kenny Chesney’s “island boy” song. Check out the lyrics and you’ll see what I mean.
I write because I’m passionate about the Caribbean and the island lifestyle, and it’s my way to share it with you. If it has anything to do with the Caribbean, rum drinks, beach style music, or Caribbean culture, you’ll be able to find it on this site.
When in the Caribbean you’ll find a camera around my neck and note pad in my pocket. This is how I document the experiences in unique and interesting ways and bring it back to you, the Castaways.
Who is Castaway Crystal:
I was raised in Southwest Florida so it’s no surprise that I have a love for beaches, water and nature. As a child, most weekends were spent fishing in the warm gulf waters on the family boat. As an adult, most weekends are spent soaking up the sun on Ft. Myers Beach. Even though I have always loved the coastal life, I don’t think I fully appreciated it until I moved to Nashville, TN. I’m all about experiencing new things, and as a Licensed Massage Therapist I thought it would be amazing to massage some of Nashville’s biggest stars (a girl can dream right?). But I missed the sun and sand too much—and let’s not forget the rum runners! After a year I couldn’t take it anymore, this sun bunny moved back to her coast of somewhere beautiful.
I’ve always been passionate about photography and writing but my passions never really had a purpose until I met Ryan. I couldn’t be happier being Ryan’s first mate and sharing my photos and stories with you. May they inspire you to go after your tropical dreams and wishes. Make a plan…Set a date…Just go!
Best John Levique Pirate Days- 2012 John's Pass Village, Maderia Beach, Florida Pirate Girls
John's Pass History...John Levique,
In the early history of the United States, it is sometimes
difficult to separate fact from fiction. There are a few
things we do know and a few things that may be true, or
may have been embroidered into the fabric of history
by the vivid imaginations and creative tongues of
storytellers.
The tale of John Levique is one of those stories.
Legend says that John was a French peasant who found
employment as a cabin boy on a Spanish sailing vessel
some time around 1836. Unfortunately for the young
man, the ship on which he sailed was taken by pirates.
John was given the choice of death or joining the pirate
crew. He chose a pirate's life. Apparently a man of some
ability, he worked his way up through the pirate ranks,
until he became captain of his own ship.
But Lavique had an unusual quirk for a pirate. He did not
like to kill people. Most pirates in those days held to the
credo Dead Men tell no Tales, and either murdered
those they captured or held them for ransom. Levique
refused to do either of those things. This habit did not
endear him to his crew, as it seemed to limit the amount
of treasure they gathered.
John himself had managed to accumulate one small chest
of gold. He buried this on an island off the West Coast of
Florida. When he decided to retire from piracy and
become a simple turtle farmer, he staked a land claim near
the site of his treasure.
In 1848, Levique and his partner Joseph Silva, a Spaniard,
decided to take a load of turtles to New Orleans. They
were paid well for their cargo, and spent a few days
partying in Louisiana. When they finally headed for
Florida, they encountered a huge storm. So they dropped
into a safe harbor to wait it out.
When they finally arrived home, they found the shoreline
quiet different then when they left. The island where
Levique had buried his treasure had been cut in two by
the gale force winds and high waters of the storm. And
the cut was right at the spot where he had buried his
treasure!
Levique sailed their boat through the new pass and into
Boca Ciega Bay, and the new pass was thereafter known
as John's Pass.
Or at least so goes the legend. We do know that at least some of it is true.
Lavique was definitely a Frenchman. He was also uneducated. There are several variations on the
spelling of his name in the historical record. He himself had no idea how to spell his name and always
signed with an X.
He arrived in this area around 1840, staked a land claim, and began turtle farming. Had he ever really
been a pirate? Was there a chest of treasure buried on the island that would later become Madeira
Beach? There is no proof one way or the other.
It is true that he was returning from New Orleans with Joseph Silva when they encountered the Great
Gale of 1848. It is also true that the Gale cut the island in half. And most historians agree that John's
Pass is named for the mysterious Monsieur Levique.
He remained in the area as a simple farmer until his death in 1873.
Until the early part of the 20th Century, the area around John's Pass was mainly undeveloped. There
were no bridges from the mainland to the barrier islands, so only a few hardy souls ventured here to hunt
and fish, or to spend a quiet day by the beach.
However, as railroads were built throughout Florida and bridges were built to these islands, more and
more people came. Many came just for the fishing, but many came and stayed. John's Pass became
part of a quaint fishing community.
In 1976, Captain Wilson Hubbard moved his fishing business from Pass-A-Grille to John's Pass. In
1979 he built The Friendly Fisherman Restaurant. He also convinced the city of Madeira Beach to
permit the building of a public boardwalk along the pass in 1980, and was instrumental in the
development of John's Pass Village.
Currently, John's Pass Village and Boardwalk is home to quaint shops, exceptional casual restaurants,
and several types of boating activities. Not your run of the mill tourist mall, John's Pass continues to
offer unique and quality merchandise, as we as excellent food, and fascinating entertainment.

Pirate Sessions perform Island State of Mind during the Key West Songwriters Festival. Island State Of Mind is off The Pirate Sessions II album and is the perfect song for a Key West party boat. They start off by playing Three Little Birds by Bob Marley then transition right into Island State Of Mind. It was an amazing time, sailing the seas and listing to songs about pirates and rum, doesn't get much better. Cheers!

5 Best Things To Do in Key West
Like other vacation locales in Florida, Key West offers plenty of ways to enjoy its coastal seat, including sailing, snorkeling and kayaking tours and several clean beaches. But beyond its outdoor pursuits, Key West also lays claim to some interesting artifacts. Once the choice vacation getaway for Ernest Hemingway, Tennesse Williams and President Harry S. Truman, the island is home to more than a few historical treasures. Museums are scattered throughout, but the most activity is concentrated on the island's western half. Duval Street is a particularly lively area for souvenir shoppers, budget dining and nightlife. Here five things to do in Key West.
1. Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park
2. Boat Tours
3. Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory
4. Mallory Square
5. Harry S. Truman Little White House

Top 10 Best Islands in Florida || West Coast Florida Beaches
Top 10 Best Islands in Florida
Florida is one of the America’s top travel destinations. Home to incredible beaches, enormous amusement parks and several exciting cities, it is easy to see the appeal of the Sunshine State. While big cities like Orlando and Miami are top travel spots, you’ll miss out if you don’t also explore some of the best islands in Florida. From coastal isles that are off the beaten track to bustling destinations closer to Cuba than Miami, these are some of the top islands worth visiting while in Florida. Surprisingly, all are accessible via one or more bridges, an unusual but fantastic advantage for those coming by car.
10. Key Biscayne
Off the coast of Miami, and just south of Miami Beach, is the barrier island known as Key Biscayne. Although it is close to the hustle and bustle of Miami, it is primarily a quiet residential area. Key Biscayne is a fantastic place to get active and enjoy the warmth of Southern Florida.
9. Gasparilla Island
Gasparilla Island is a small barrier island on Florida’s western coast. Although close to cities like Port Charlotte and Cape Coral, Gasparilla Island boasts a far more relaxed atmosphere. Named for a Spanish pirate that once lived on the island, Gasparilla is one of the few places where you can still experience old Florida. On Boca Grande Beach, take a morning stroll and dip your toes into the cool ocean water.
8. Siesta Key
Just off the coast of Sarasota is Siesta Key, a barrier island in the Gulf of Mexico. Much of Siesta Key is white sand beach, and its 8-mile long public beach is widely recognized as one of the most beautiful beaches in the United States. Many people who come to Siesta Key come specifically for the beach, and there is no better way to spend the day than soaking up the sun and going for a dip in the ocean.
7. Key Largo
As you head south of Miami and begin exploring the Florida Keys, one of the first you’ll see is Key Largo. As the first major stop in the Florida Keys, many visitors bypass Key Largo on their way further south. However, Key Largo is also worth a longer stop. If you’re into scuba diving, in particular, then Key Largo is absolutely somewhere you’ll want to spend some time.
6. Anna Maria Island
South of Tampa and St. Petersburg is another barrier island in Florida, known as Anna Maria Island. Once again, the big draw to Anna Maria is access to the beautiful beaches. Bradenton Beach and Coquina Beach are two top picks for anyone eager to do some swimming or just build castles in the sand. Anna Maria Island has also tried to preserve much of its history and architecture and provides an “Old Florida” feel.
5. Marco Island
If you take a bridge leading off of mainland Florida from Naples, you’ll get to Marco Island. Located just on the edge of the Everglades, Marco Island is a popular spot for boat tours in Southwest Florida. It is also an urban island, and high-rises along the coast provide visitors and residents alike with spectacular ocean views. The island is a common destination for deep-sea fishing charters, romantic sailing cruises and dolphin-spotting expeditions. Of course, Marco Island also boasts some wonderful beaches.
4. Islamorada
Roughly one third of the way between Miami and Key West is Islamorada, a city that is technically located on several different islands: Tea Table Key, Plantation Key and both Lower and Upper Matecumbe Keys. Islamorada is sometimes called the Sport Fishing Capital of the World, and it attracts a number of serious anglers as well as amateur fishing enthusiasts. If you would rather admire the fish than catch them, Bahia Honda State Park is a popular spot for snorkeling that is located right off the Overseas Highway.
3. Sanibel Island
On the western coast of Florida, in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, is Sanibel Island. The entire barrier island is a top vacation spot, and it is known as a quieter, family-friendly destination for travelers. The beaches on Sanibel Island are stunning, but don’t expect pristine, fine white sand.
2. Amelia Island
In the northeastern part of the Sunshine State is Amelia Island, a barrier island in the Sea Islands Chain. Once again, this is an island in Florida known for its spectacular beaches. It is also a fantastic recreation destination that boasts activities ranging from golf to boating.
1. Key West
Arguably the most famous island in all of Florida is Key West. The southernmost part of the state, Key West is a world-famous destination that boasts year-round warm weather as well as unforgettable nightlife. Whether it is January or July, you can expect Key West to be in full swing. If you’re a history buff, be sure to check out Ernest Hemingway’s house, or take a tour of the incredible Harry S.

Day 11 of 13 Days of #Vlogoween #Vlogtober
In this video we check out Boynton Beach's 7th annual Haunted Pirate Festival & Mermaid Splash! It was a lot of fun exploring the festival and seeing everyone dressed up as pirates and other mythical creatures like mermaids and fairies. The band played at the Forbidden Island Stage and we were able to catch a few other performances that were going on around the festival, as well as lots of vendors and options for food and drinks. One of our favorites was the snickerdoodle cider we tried and the grilled cheese patty melt from the food truck melted madness. We hope to be back next year and get to dress up more and catch the costume contest!

ARGH MATEY!
Around these parts legend has it that the spirits of haunted pirates, from ghostly ship wrecks off the coast of Florida, take over downtown Boynton Beach the weekend before Halloween. Local inhabitants beware because East Ocean Avenue will be transformed into Hobb’s Cove, a bustling old world port brimming with pirate superstitions and pirate ghost. This area is not for the faint of heart, but brave souls will find multiple stages and encampments, that feature continuous live entertainment throughout the festival.
Mermaid sightings in Boynton Beach! According to folklore the sirens will lure you into the depths of the sea with two-days of non-stop fun! Reclaiming Buried Treasure in the Black Swan Case
James A. Goold, Covington and Burling LLP and Dr. James P. Delgado, NOAA
Mr. Goold an Dr. Delgado describe their work on the famous landmark legal case concerning more than half a million silver coins recovered from a deep water site off the coast of Portugal by a commercial salvage firm, Odyssey Marine Exploration.
Odyssey characterized the find as recovering a large amount of silver that had been dumped at sea, while Spanish authorities suspected the coins came from the Nuestra Senora de las Mercedes, a Spanish naval frigate lost in combat with British naval forces during the Napoleonic Wars. In a protracted international legal battle, Spain's position prevailed, as Odyssey had indeed encountered more than coins, and that smoking gun evidence of the lost ship and its crew were present on the sea floor and in what had been recovered. The case revolved not only around the issue of the identity of the mystery shipwreck, but also the legal status of warships, questions of public and private treasure carried aboard the ship, and intervention in the case by the government of Peru, asserting the silver had come from colonial Spanish territory that is now Peru, and descendants of Spanish merchant families who had shipped coins on the lost vessel.

To fully explore and understand the ocean, we can no longer rely on a handful of large, expensive research vessels and vehicles. We truly need all hands on deck to do it.
On November 8-9, 2018, we brought together leaders and changemakers in ocean exploration, entertainment, recreation, and art to imagine new ways to empower an open, inclusive global community of ocean explorers. Our goal is to imagine creative ways to make the ocean so pervasive in modern culture that everyone has a positive association with and understanding of the sea.

Steamboats On The Red
Looking at the shallow twists and turns of the Red River, its hard to imagine that steampowered paddlewheel boats were once the most important transportation link between St. Paul and Winnipeg. From the first in 1859 to the last that sank in 1909, Red River steamboats hauled thousands of settlers and millions of pounds of freight across the border. Although it lasted barely 50 years, the age of the steamboat forged a commercial network between the United States and Canada that exists to this day in the I29 corridor.
To shine a spotlight on this important piece of prairie history, Steamboats on the Red examines the history of steamboat transportation on the Red River and the impact this important trade route had on the development of the region.
The $1,000 prize that was the key to unlocking trade fl oodgates between the United States and Canada.
How the partnership between railroads and riverboats turned to cut-throat competition.
The larger than life personalities who launched steamboats on the Red.
The evolution of Red River communities from backwater outposts to thriving boom towns.
How the riverboats carried the seeds of their own destruction.
