Night Dive on Molasses Reef, Key Largo Florida
Night Dive on Molasses Reef, Key Largo Florida. Loaded with awesome scenes of many turtles, nurse shark, and a reef shark.
Rainbow Reef Dive #9 - Molasses Reef - FIRST NIGHT DIVE!
This is arguably the most beautiful collection of reefs in all of Florida! Rather than a single site, Molasses is an extensive reef complex with diving depths from about 10 feet to more than 70. At depths ranging from 10-40 feet, Molasses Reef features high profile spur and groove coral formations. At 40-60 feet down, seaward sand chutes separate a gently sloping hard flat bottom adorned by hard and soft corals, along with a variety of sponges. The drop-off begins in the 50-60 foot range, and extends downward at various angles to the 70-100 foot range. Excellent drift diving can be found here.
Certain areas have distinct features for which they have been named, such as Spanish Anchor Winch Hole, Fire Coral Caves, Hole in the Wall and many others. Snorkelers will enjoy the shallow spur and groove formations typified by Elkhorn and Boulder Corals punctuated by seafans. Divers will find plenty to occupy them as well. Visibility is generally excellent on this reef as it is rinsed by the currents of the nearby gulfstream.
This is probably the most visited site in the Florida Keys and possibly the United States. Because of this, Marine officers generally patrol this area. These officers make sure that divers understand that even touching coral reef can kill these beautiful organisms. This site houses massive brain coral, star coral, and other large barrier corals. Caves and ledges provide homes for lobsters, crabs, moray eels, parrot fish, angelfish, filefish, turtles, rays, and sometimes nurse sharks. Divers will be able to come fairly close to these creatures. Sandy patches divide areas of coral and create an amazing sight. An old ship winch and an eight-foot anchor help to create the unique and interesting nature of this dive. Boaters must tie off to one of the 40 mooring buoys surrounding the large tower marking the reef.
This area was harmed when the freighter, Wellwood, ran aground here in 1984. Damaged areas are marked and should be avoided. Part of the remaining rubble from Wellwood is contained in the .3 square nautical mile Sanctuary Preservation Area (SPA) which reaches down to 60-feet. This is a dive not to miss for anyone traveling to the area. Those looking to snorkel should stay to the northern, shallower end of the reef while divers will want to explore the southern end. This is also an easily accessible and highly used night-dive site.
Local legend suggests that Molasses is named for a barge that grounded here many years ago carrying a cargo of molasses barrels, but much of the strewn wreckage is probably from a wooden hulled Austrian ship named Slobodna, run aground here in 1887.

Diving Florida Keys
We asked for Crocker Wall but Conch Republic Divers put us on this plateau with scattered and broken coral. We saw one lonely grouper and later watched a ray leave it's hiding spot in the sand ... probably because we were hovering and watching for it to move. Second dive was worse... supposedly a thirty foot dive, we never got below about seventeen and never found what they told us to look for. I was less than happy that nobody thought to mention we'd be diving though jellyfish that had been in the area for weeks! Not a word! Till we're out there that is....

To fully explore and understand the ocean, we can no longer rely on a handful of large, expensive research vessels and vehicles. We truly need all hands on deck to do it.
On November 8-9, 2018, we brought together leaders and changemakers in ocean exploration, entertainment, recreation, and art to imagine new ways to empower an open, inclusive global community of ocean explorers. Our goal is to imagine creative ways to make the ocean so pervasive in modern culture that everyone has a positive association with and understanding of the sea.

Joshua VOSS 03/16/16 Linking Exploration to Conservation in the Northwest Gulf of Mexico
About the Speaker
Dr. Joshua Voss is an Assistant Research Professor in the FAU Harbor Branch Center for Marine Ecosystem Health. His research is focused on shallow and mesophotic coral reef ecology, coral health, molecular ecology, and marine conservation and management. Through the Robertson Coral Reef Program and the NOAA Cooperative Institute for Exploration, Research, and Technology (CIOERT), he works to discover, characterize, and protect coral reefs ecosystems.
Dr. Voss has led 38 research expeditions and completed more than 1300 scientific research dives. He serves on the South Atlantic Fisheries Management Council Coral Advisory Panel and as the co-lead for the Southeast Florida Coral Reef Initiative’s Technical Advisory Panel. He also teaches in Harbor Branch’s Semester By The Sea Program and Florida Atlantic University's Biology Graduate Program, and conducts molecular workshops for high school students. Dr. Voss earned his Ph.D. in biological sciences at Florida International University in Miami, and is a proud alumnus of Elon University in North Carolina where he completed his bachelor’s degree.
About the Lecture
Through CIOERT, Harbor Branch researchers have partnered with NOAA to explore and characterize the diverse, beautiful, and extensive coral reefs in the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary (FGBNMS) and adjacent banks 100-150 miles off the coast of Texas. Since 2009, Dr. Voss and colleagues have surveyed this reef system extensively using a combination of remotely operated vehicles, technical diving, traditional SCUBA, and fish acoustics.
Much of the Flower Garden reefs lies in mesophotic depths, or the twilight zone, resulting in unique communities of corals, invertebrates, algae, and fish. These studies have demonstrated that mesophotic coral habitats in the northwest Gulf of Mexico are more extensive than previously known and provide critical information to support the FGBNMS sanctuary expansion plan.
'Dusty' the dolphin attacks woman
A dolphin that is a local celebrity in Doolin, Ireland, has been filmed attacking a woman swimming in the sea alongside the mammal.
The woman was injured when, local celebrity and much loved Dusty the dolphin, attacked her while she was swimming off Doolin Pier.
The dolphin is believed to have struck the woman in the kidney area with its nose, leaving her winded and shouting to be rescued.
In the video, Dusty can be seen swimming around two people in the water while other members of the public look on from the pier.
The mammal then begins to splash its tail around and it can be seen swimming up to the woman.
She lets out a scream of pain before shouting for the people on the pier to get her out of the water.
The woman is pulled from the sea by a man and can be seen lying down trying to catch her breath after being winded.
Dusty has long been a local resident in the shores off County Clare, but in recent months has been responsible for injuring several people.

Saving Nature in a Human-Dominated World by M. Sanjayan
April 28, 2014 | In a world of seven billion humans, can wild nature continue to exist? In this Wrigley Lecture, M. Sanjayan describes how the environmental movement has long been dominated by a Western philosophy that sees humans as separate from and detrimental to nature. While great strides have been made in the past few decades, most scientists will agree that conservation efforts are simply not keeping up with the vast scale of planetary change. Despite our best efforts, the conservation movement is failing.
Josie Iselin + Susan Middleton: The Slimy and the Spineless – Portraits of Unsung Ocean Heroes
Both advocates for thinking differently about ocean preservation, photographers and authors Josie Iselin and Susan Middleton have taken similar approaches to two complementary subjects, bringing knowledge and appreciation to little-understood or recognized subjects. Seaweed (marine algae) and spineless animals (marine invertebrates) embody the two dominant realms of life in the sea, and, in fact, they form the foundation for life on earth, yet they are largely unknown to the human eye. Each author will give a concise presentation of their own work and field questions from each other and the audience.
