Oceanside Library Intro
On Toby's Terms author Charmaine Hammond partners with Oceanside Public Library and San Diego Humane Society for the Paws to Help: READ-MEET-ACT.
The Oceanside Public Library received a California State Library Get Involved: Book-To-Action Project grant to do a series of book discussions and a civic engagement project. The program is entitled Paws to Help: READ-MEET-ACT. What a great way to combine literacy, a rescue organization and volunteerism!
The Library has chosen my books On Toby's Terms (for the adult program) and my book for children Toby The Pet Therapy Dog and His Hospital Friends. The books were read and discussed through April and early May 2012 to encourage dialogue about volunteerism and the importance of both humans and pets giving back to the community.
Part of this program involved a community event so, the Library partnered with the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA in Oceanside and created an events with a volunteer project distributing flyers with animals' pictures and adoption information and a mobile adoption event held in June 2012. Volunteers were also recruited to start a Homework Helper program in the Civic Center Library and Mission Branch Library.

STORYLINE:
Children of US marines serving in the Gulf are using computer technology to keep in touch with their parents.
The Stuart Mesa Elementary School in Camp Pendleton has about 200 pupils, many of whose parents are in combat units in Iraq.
The base, about 60 miles south of Los Angeles, is home to some of the Marine expeditionary forces who were among the first to enter Iraq and do battle with Iraqi forces.
Officials at the school have installed an internet web camera in one of the classrooms.
With a high-speed telephone connection, children at the school can send messages by image and by voice to parents serving in the war.
School officials say they started the classroom webcam after the September 11, 2001 terror attacks, when US Marines from Camp Pendelton were sent to Afghanistan.
The equipment, a camera and software, were donated by local firms for the project.
