Santa Barbara is my favorite California wine region. Dollar for dollar, nothing competes, especially if you love cool climate wines like Pinot Noir and elegant, restrained Chardonnay. Our restaurant on this episode also has a spot close to my heart: it was the place I envisioned for V is for Vino when I came up with the idea years ago, and doggone-it, I got it done. Find out why Santa Barbara is the getaway for the celebs on this episode of V is for Vino.

Stearns Wharf is a pier at the cross section of the end of State Street and Cabrillo, in the harbor in Santa Barbara, California, United States. When completed In 1872, it became the longest deep-water pier between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Named for its builder, local lumberman John P. Stearns, the wharf served the passenger and freight shipping needs of California's South Coast for over a quarter century. Before the wharf, passengers and cargo had to be rowed ashore through the breakers and kelp. Despite the great convenience offered by the wharf, Santa Barbara remained a fair-weather harbor with an acute need for a breakwater. During December 1878, storms destroyed and washed away more than 1,000 feet of the wharf. Despite these losses, it would be another 52 years before Santa Barbara got its needed breakwater.
When the railroad reached Santa Barbara in 1877, Stearns added another spur to the wharf, providing a necessary transport link to his lumberyard and the nearby Southern Pacific Depot. The spur was damaged by severe storms in the early 20th century and was finally abandoned in 1923.
The Harbor Restaurant was built on the wharf in 1941, marking an end to the shipping and transportation era of the 19th century. The restaurant proved to be the economic backbone of the wharf.
Since its beginning, Stearns Wharf has had several natural and economic disasters, from the big earthquake in 1925 to a fire in 1973 which caused its closing. The wharf stayed closed for six years until restorations were completed in 1981. Another fire in the winter of 1998 devastated the last hundred and fifty feet of the wharf, including Moby Dick Restaurant. Though the rest of the wharf remained open during this period, the rebuilding took over two years. Stearns Wharf stands today as Santa Barbara's most visited landmark.
Currently, Stearns Wharf is a great place for locals and tourists of all ages to eat, shop, fish, or simply walk and enjoy the view. There are 17 businesses on the Wharf open to the public, ranging from restaurants, wine tastings, museums, souvenir shops, and smaller eateries, such as an ice cream parlor and candy store. Kiosks hours are 7am - 10pm, business hours vary depending on each location. Parking is usually not a problem, with many lots on the pier. A complimentary valet service is also available for all customers. The first 90 minutes are free, with a fee of $2.50 for each hour, or part of an hour, thereafter. The max daily rate is $20, which is also the lost ticket fee. There are also various parking spaces off Cabrillo and the areas across Cabrillo. Take note of the parking signs to avoid any parking tickets. During the summer, parking is harder to find due to the higher tourist traffic on the pier.

Bridlewood Estate Winery Video Tour Santa Barbara
Tour Bridlewood Estate Winery with Judit & Corina from
A beautiful video tour of the winery & vineyards and a quick review of English Pleasure Syrah.
Bridlewood Winery was designed for high-quality, artisan winemaking. Just inside the adobe façade of this Spanish-style winery, state-of-the-art equipment is the order of the day: pneumatic bladder presses, temperature controlled fermenters, gentle grape and wine handling systems, and the finest European and American oak barrels. Winemaker David Hopkins selects grapes from dozens of Central Coast vineyards to create his intense , lush Pinot Noir, aromatic Viognier and elegant Chardonnay. Each wine is as unique as the Bridlewood property itself. Nestled on the eastern edge of the Santa Ynez Valley, 30 miles north of Santa Barbara, our 105-acre estate is set on a high bench of ancient seabed. The picturesque landscape features a Mission-style winery, hillside vineyards and breathtaking views of the surrounding region.
~Bridlewood Estate Winery Winner Circle English Pleasure Syrah opens with floral notes of dark cherries, rose petals and violets. This is soon followed by the scents of cedar, sandalwood, cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg. This is an elegant wine that is full of silky tannins with a velvety finish.

Visiting Los Olivos Wine Country Santa Barbara California
Kendall-Jackson's Santa Barbara County Vineyards
Located just 90 miles north from Los Angeles, Santa Barbara is one of the most unique wine regions along the California Coast. The valleys along the Santa Barbara coastline run east to west rather than north to south, resulting in ocean breezes that sweep through the region in a rare eastward direction. This geologic oddity provides a patchwork of microclimates and terrains, resulting in one of the most diverse grape-growing regions in the United States. The Santa Maria Valley, the county’s northernmost AVA and most famous, has the majority of its vineyards planted on elevated plateaus along the Santa Maria River mesa and Sisquoc River drainage. The soils are typically of marine origin and sedimentation from river wash. Learn more here:

Santa Barbara Urban Wine Trail
Santa Barbara's Urban Wine Trail is unique. Follow it and you get to explore Santa Barbara from elegant State Street and the historic El Paseo shopping center where you will find Grassini, Au Bon Climat and Margerum, to the outskirts of the Funk Zone where Carr resides in it's Quonsit hut making you feel like you've walked right into a barrel. Cross the train tracks and stop by AVA Santa Barbara where you can taste wines from all the AVA's in the area and see the huge Elkpen mural mapping out the unique climate, soils and history of the AVA's. Stroll down the block and stop at Santa Barbara Winery one of the very first in this area. Anacapa Street is teaming with tasting rooms like Oreana, Kunin and of course Municipal Wine Makers which looks like a dive shop and has a wall of filing cabinets. As you stroll between the tasting rooms take in the Funk zone with it's murals and small artist shops and galleries. The Santa Barbara Surf Museum is there as well as plenty of surfboard and dive shops. Keep walking and you will hit the beach. Grab a segway or a bike or just walk the beach. Head out on to the wharf and visit the Aquarium or just enjoy watching the fishermen. Stop by Conway Family Vineyards Deep Sea tasting room with a 2nd story patio to enjoy the view with a glass of wine. Don't miss sunset at the end of the wharf and the parade of boats returning to the marina. It makes for a perfect day...although 2 would be even better.
