Little Mac's Passing - SANTA BARBARA ZOO
On September 25, 2019, we said goodbye to our 48-year-old elephant, Little Mac.
As a geriatric elephant, Little Mac had been dealing with age-related issues for years; however, her condition deteriorated dramatically in the last few weeks. The Zoo team worked tirelessly with outside vets and experts to treat her condition, but Little Mac's health declined beyond the help of any medical treatments.
Starting in January, a behavioral study was conducted to observe Little Mac's behavior after the passing of her companion, Sujatha. This study provided ample amounts of data that Little Mac was thriving in her environment, even on her own. With this data, our animal experts believe her declining health to be directly associated with her old age – medical issues that she would have been facing in any respect.
Little Mac and Sujatha had been a part of the Santa Barbara community for almost 50 years. They've been important ambassadors for their wild counterparts, providing invaluable education, connection, and joy to every person who met them. Thank you to our community of friends and family who have provided our team with love, kind words, and fond memories. Mac and Suzie will never be forgotten.
Santa Barbara 4K
Santa Barbara (Spanish for Saint Barbara) is the county seat of Santa Barbara County in the U.S. state of California. Situated on a south-facing section of coastline, the longest such section on the West Coast of the United States, the city lies between the steeply rising Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. Santa Barbara's climate is often described as Mediterranean, and the city has been promoted as the American Riviera. As of 2014, the city had an estimated population of 91,196, up from 88,410 in 2010, making it the second most populous city in the county after Santa Maria[13] while the contiguous urban area, which includes the cities of Goleta and Carpinteria, along with the unincorporated regions of Isla Vista, Montecito, Mission Canyon, Hope Ranch, Summerland, and others, has an approximate population of 220,000. The population of the entire county in 2010 was 423,895.
In addition to being a popular tourist and resort destination, the city economy includes a large service sector, education, technology, health care, finance, agriculture, manufacturing, and local government. In 2004, the service sector accounted for fully 35% of local employment. Education in particular is well represented, with four institutions of higher learning on the south coast (the University of California, Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara City College, Westmont College, and Antioch University). The Santa Barbara Airport serves the city, as does Amtrak (most notably the Pacific Surfliner which runs from San Diego to San Luis Obispo). U.S. Highway 101 connects the Santa Barbara area with Los Angeles to the southeast and San Francisco to the northwest. Behind the city, in and beyond the Santa Ynez Mountains, is the Los Padres National Forest, which contains several remote wilderness areas. Channel Islands National Park and Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary are located approximately 20 miles (32 km) offshore.

Stearns Wharf is a pier at the cross section of the end of State Street and Cabrillo, in the harbor in Santa Barbara, California, United States. When completed In 1872, it became the longest deep-water pier between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Named for its builder, local lumberman John P. Stearns, the wharf served the passenger and freight shipping needs of California's South Coast for over a quarter century. Before the wharf, passengers and cargo had to be rowed ashore through the breakers and kelp. Despite the great convenience offered by the wharf, Santa Barbara remained a fair-weather harbor with an acute need for a breakwater. During December 1878, storms destroyed and washed away more than 1,000 feet of the wharf. Despite these losses, it would be another 52 years before Santa Barbara got its needed breakwater.
When the railroad reached Santa Barbara in 1877, Stearns added another spur to the wharf, providing a necessary transport link to his lumberyard and the nearby Southern Pacific Depot. The spur was damaged by severe storms in the early 20th century and was finally abandoned in 1923.
The Harbor Restaurant was built on the wharf in 1941, marking an end to the shipping and transportation era of the 19th century. The restaurant proved to be the economic backbone of the wharf.
Since its beginning, Stearns Wharf has had several natural and economic disasters, from the big earthquake in 1925 to a fire in 1973 which caused its closing. The wharf stayed closed for six years until restorations were completed in 1981. Another fire in the winter of 1998 devastated the last hundred and fifty feet of the wharf, including Moby Dick Restaurant. Though the rest of the wharf remained open during this period, the rebuilding took over two years. Stearns Wharf stands today as Santa Barbara's most visited landmark.
Currently, Stearns Wharf is a great place for locals and tourists of all ages to eat, shop, fish, or simply walk and enjoy the view. There are 17 businesses on the Wharf open to the public, ranging from restaurants, wine tastings, museums, souvenir shops, and smaller eateries, such as an ice cream parlor and candy store. Kiosks hours are 7am - 10pm, business hours vary depending on each location. Parking is usually not a problem, with many lots on the pier. A complimentary valet service is also available for all customers. The first 90 minutes are free, with a fee of $2.50 for each hour, or part of an hour, thereafter. The max daily rate is $20, which is also the lost ticket fee. There are also various parking spaces off Cabrillo and the areas across Cabrillo. Take note of the parking signs to avoid any parking tickets. During the summer, parking is harder to find due to the higher tourist traffic on the pier.
SANTA BARBARA ZOO | Things To Do in Southern California
During our trip to California this year, we took a trip to Santa Barbara to visit the SANTA BARBARA ZOO. This zoo is said to be one of the best zoos in california. I like the layout of this zoo quite a bit as it is pretty easy to navigate. One thing that I noticed is that there were a lot of play areas for kids. Also, there was a lot of grass that you could use for picnics. If you're in the area, I recommend taking the time to visit this zoo. While it may not be the best zoo in the USA, it is definitely worth a few hours of your time. If you want to visit an amazing zoo, drive south to San Diego and visit that zoo, which is probably the best we have ever had the chance to enjoy.
If you'd like to visit, here is the information you'll need!

Introducing Bradley – SANTA BARBARA ZOO
– The Zoo's thrilled to introduce the newest addition to our family: Bradley.
Bradley is a 10-month-old Golden Retriever who's currently training to be a Santa Barbara Zoo ambassador. The Zoo adopted Bradley from a local family with hopes that he will soon be meeting visitors, participating in education programs, and so much more! You may see him out working with his trainers, but he’s not ready to meet the public quite yet. To learn more about Bradley, visit sbzoo.org/bradley.
A special thanks to Bradley's sponsors, Jackson and Alaia.
VISITING SANTA BARBARA ZOO
Loving the visit to Santa Barbara Zoo for the weekend. Our little Boy had so much fun. Few Tips though, arrive early when the Zoo opens so you can avoid the crowds and more fun feeding the animals. They are more active in the morning. Also, wear walking shoes. Santa Barbara Zoo has a lot of hills. Our visit was unplanned that we all are wearing sandals. It would have been less tiring on my feet or our feet during the visit (haha). Anyways, I hope you guys will have fun during your visit at the zoo.

Soaked in year-round sunshine, Santa Barbara is a wonderland for wiggly kids. Nature scores top billing here, and children of all ages will find a range of exhilarating outdoor adventures, from whale watching cruises and harbor seal sanctuaries to action-packed playgrounds, calm beaches, surf breaks, and beachfront bike paths. Welcome Bono
Hello Bono! After losing his long-time mate, Bono (pronounced boh-no) came to the Santa Barbara Zoo to join solo female, Jasmine. These two immediately hit it off, and Jasmine in particular was exhibiting excited behaviors that her keepers have never seen before! Jasmine and Bono are both geriatric in age, but companionship is incredibly important for this social species – even in their golden years.

Kooka-Brew Beer - SANTA BARBARA ZOO
- It's a Zoo Brew tradition to create a specialty beer inspired by one of the Santa Barbara Zoo animals. This year, our friends at Pure Order Brewing Co. created a New England style IPA called the Kooka-Brew! Inspired by the laughing kookaburras, this year’s original brew features a favorite ingredient of this Australian bird – crickets!
