Three Princes Day Celebration - Santa Cruz, California
On August 19th, 2015 citizens of California gathered at Cowell's Beach in Santa Cruz to celebrate Three Princes Day and the 130th anniversary of the first recorded exhibition of surfing on the US Continent, during the summer of 1885. These original surfers were three princes of the Hawaiian king who had arrived at boarding school in San Mateo and discovered ride-able surf in California while visiting a relative in Santa Cruz. To commemorate the event, a handful of some of the world's best surfers rode a collection of various ancient Hawaiian surfboard replicas (all carved from solid wood planks by local shaper Bob Pearson) and gave an exhibition of their own. A large group of family, friends and onlookers gathered at the Santa Cruz Surfing Sculpture on Saturday, August 19th, to celebrate the life and times of Johnny Rice; legendary surfer and master surfboard builder. Johnny was born in Indiana in 1938 and served in the Coast Guard and the Merchant Marines. In the fifties and sixties he lived in Southern California where he learned to shape from Dale Velzy and hung out with all the great surfers of the time; Mickey Muñoz, Greg Noll, Mickey Dora and Dewey Weber. In 1986 he moved back to Santa Cruz and reconnected with his Mira Costa High School sweetheart, Rosemary Reimers - they married in 1989. Johnny was a legend and a real gentleman...R.I.P. Surfing Rabbi
Rabbi Nachum Shifren, known world-wide as the Surfing Rabbi is on target to break the record for the most challenging channel crossing in the WORLD: THE MOLOKAI CHANNEL.
Rabbi's preparation for this auspicious moment came over 48 years ago as he first paddled out at the Mecca of all surfing beaches, Malibu! From that day forward, he has dedicated his life as a Mentor for thousands, about surfing, paddleboarding, and big-wave riding.
He paddled the Catalina Channel, solo, without boat or provisions, in 1973, spurred on by his Mentor and Waterman/Lifeguard Giant, TOM ZAHN. Lifeguard Buddy Bohn was inspired by Rabbi Shifren to reinstate the Catalina Classic to the halcyon days of the 50's and 60's, when the race was a dominant aquatic event.
Rabbi Shifren surfed the fabled North Shore of Oahu from '69-72 while a student at UH Manoa, and challenged the huge waves of Petacalco, Oaxaca, and Michoacan in Mexico for 5 years, while lifeguarding in Malibu, Leo Carillo, and El Capitan State Beaches from 1973-1987. At Rincon Point, he articulated his Surf and Soul theory about surfing and spirituality, where he was portrayed in the state-of-the art movie production, Step Into Liquid. Rabbi Shifen's much loved Book, The Surfing Rabbi a Kabbalistic Quest for Soul has inspired many to strive to be their best.
Honoring the memory of Rabbi Shifren's mentor figure in huge Hawaiin surf, the great Eddie Aikau, he organized the Waterman Memorial Paddleboard Race (10 miles, from Zuma to Malibu Pier), in 1982. The first year, the race attracted such greats as Tom Zahn, Jim Mollica, Kemp Aaberg, Craig Lockwood, and Watermen from as far away as San Diego and Santa Cruz.
At 61 years of age, the Surfing Rabbi is as fit now as he was back when, and continues to inspire others with his ability as a Waterman in the true California tradition, as an outstanding figure in the Malibu line-up, and fierce competitor in Lifeguard competition. Always striving to be in top physical condition, the Rabbi has 3 marathons under his belt, as well as several triathlons. Last year at the International Surf Festival, he took third place in the Velzy Classic Paddleboard Race (from Manhattan to Hermosa Pier).
When asked about his age and go-for-it attitude, he simply replies: Old watermen never die out....they just keep paddling!

Long Beach Waterfront Warriors Honor Heroes
The sprawling city of Long Beach, NY sits East of the towering city known as the Big Apple, but it doesn’t sit in the shadow of any city when it comes to Big Heart. Especially the heart generated by their love for American Veterans.
And the Long Beach Waterfront Warriors have their arms stretched out as wide as our boardwalk is long for America's wounded warriors.
This week New York State’s, little City By the Sea's Waterfront Warriors had our veterans flown from their treatment facility, Walter Reed Army Hospital in Maryland to Long Beach, NY for a long weekend of hosted fun in the sun. Our war veterans were treated to a long weekend of dining, a NYC visit, fishing, surfing, barbecue and a heartfelt parade.
But I’m sure the message of love we offer is the same expression of every every city, town, hamlet and crossroads from Long Beach, NY to Long Beach CA. We all honor our wounded warriors, and all veterans who serve to keep us safe and free.
I captured just a bit of our honors to them in a slideshow, you can see it right here.
God bless America.
Be well,
Lee
