Yosemite National Park Vacation Travel Guide | Expedia
Yosemite – an American story unlike any other. Follow us through the national park from its high country to its waterfalls, its towering sequoia groves to its valley meadows.
When ready, browse vacation packages to Yosemite National Park:
#YosemiteNationalPark sits on the western slopes of California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains. Most visitors spend their #vacation in Yosemite Valley, which despite being only 7 miles long and 1 mile wide, packs in more jaw-dropping scenery than just about any other place on Earth.
#Visit Tunnel View and stand before a panorama that’s reduced generations of visitors to silence. The Yosemite Valley ring road follows the banks of the Merced River, which shifts in character as it thunders from the valley walls, before gently winding across the valley floor. The ring road is dotted with trailheads that lead to 800 miles of hiking trails.
Drive along Tioga Road, one of the USA’s most scenic highways. Fill your lungs with alpine air at Olmsted Point, refresh yourself by the waters of Tenaya Lake, then spend the day at Tuolumne Meadow, the traditional summer hunting grounds of the Ahwaneechee.
For now, we hope you enjoy watching this #travel #guide as much as we enjoyed making it.

Top 5 Must-See Attractions in Yosemite | National Geographic
By placing Yosemite Valley and Mariposa Grove under federal protection in 1864, Abraham Lincoln paved the way for what would later become California's Yosemite National Park. See the tallest waterfall in North America, massive sequoia trees in Mariposa Grove, and endless wildlife throughout the park. From mountainous vistas to valleys of wildflowers, it is clear why this sprawling wilderness has awed and inspired the likes of John Muir and Ansel Adams.

Yosemite National Park (/joʊˈsɛmᵻti/ yoh-SEM-it-ee[4]) is a national park spanning portions of Tuolumne, Mariposa and Madera counties in Northern California.[5][6] The park, which is managed by the National Park Service, covers an area of 747,956 acres (1,168.681 sq mi; 302,687 ha; 3,026.87 km2)[2] and reaches across the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountain range.[7] About 4 million people visit Yosemite each year:[3] most spend the majority of their time in the seven square miles (18 km2) of Yosemite Valley.[8] Designated a World Heritage Site in 1984, Yosemite is internationally recognized for its granite cliffs, waterfalls, clear streams, giant sequoia groves, lakes, mountains, glaciers, and biological diversity.[8] Almost 95% of the park is designated wilderness.[9] Yosemite was central to the development of the national park idea. First, Galen Clark and others lobbied to protect Yosemite Valley from development, ultimately leading to President Abraham Lincoln's signing the Yosemite Grant in 1864. Later, John Muir led a successful movement to establish a larger national park encompassing not just the valley, but surrounding mountains and forests as well—paving the way for the United States national park system.[10]
Yosemite is one of the largest and least fragmented habitat blocks in the Sierra Nevada, and the park supports a diversity of plants and animals. The park has an elevation range from 2,127 to 13,114 feet (648 to 3,997 m) and contains five major vegetation zones: chaparral/oak woodland, lower montane forest, upper montane forest, subalpine zone, and alpine. Of California's 7,000 plant species, about 50% occur in the Sierra Nevada and more than 20% within Yosemite. There is suitable habitat for more than 160 rare plants in the park, with rare local geologic formations and unique soils characterizing the restricted ranges many of these plants occupy.[8]
The geology of the Yosemite area is characterized by granitic rocks and remnants of older rock. About 10 million years ago, the Sierra Nevada was uplifted and then tilted to form its relatively gentle western slopes and the more dramatic eastern slopes. The uplift increased the steepness of stream and river beds, resulting in formation of deep, narrow canyons. About one million years ago, snow and ice accumulated, forming glaciers at the higher alpine meadows that moved down the river valleys. Ice thickness in Yosemite Valley may have reached 4,000 feet (1,200 m) during the early glacial episode. The downslope movement of the ice masses cut and sculpted the U-shaped valley that attracts so many visitors to its scenic vistas today.[8]
The name Yosemite (meaning killer in Miwok) originally referred to the name of a renegade tribe which was driven out of the area (and possibly annihilated) by the Mariposa Battalion. Before then the area was called Ahwahnee (big mouth) by indigenous people.

Ahwahnee Hotel Tour & Review | California Travel Tips
Veronica Hill tours the Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite National Park in this episode of California Travel Tips.
Opened on July 14, 1927, the Ahwahnee is Yosemite's most luxurious accommodations. Its grand public rooms have hosted presidents and royalty, and today it remains one of Yosemite's top attractions.
Free walking tours of the Yosemite Ahwahnee are offered throughout the year, highlighting the hotel's history, architecture and legends.
According to Interpretive Services guide Andrew West, the Ahwahnee lodge served as inspiration, but not the filming site of The Shining.
Named for the Ahwahneechee Indians who once inhabited this valley, the Ahwahnee combines Native American, Art Deco, and Arts & Crafts styles.
Don't miss the gorgeous stained glass panels in the Great Lounge, or the original rubber tile mosaics found on the lobby floor. Middle Eastern rugs, German Gothic chandeliers and Native American baskets add to the eclectic look.
Every fall, the hotel hosts its annual Vintners Holidays, drawing top winemakers from throughout the state.
This epicurean event, which precedes the hotel's Chef's Holidays and Bracebridge Dinner, features wine tasting, informative seminars, and grand 5-course meal in the historic Ahwahnee Dining Room.
With its 34-foot ceiling, huge floor-to-ceiling windows and sugar pine beams, the Ahwahnee dining room is one of the most beautiful restaurants in the world. Chef Percy Whatley leads the culinary team, with expertly prepared American cuisine using farm-fresh ingredients.
Most of the Ahwahnee hotel rooms, suites and cottages have stunning views of the valley — and WiFi is free for hotel guests. For a true splurge, book one of their private cabins along the Merced River, or an Ahwahnee suite — just like Queen Elizabeth II did during her visit in 1983.
Conveniently located just 1 mile east of Yosemite Village, Ahwahnee is close to the center of action.
Start your day with free coffee in the Mezzanine, followed by breakfast in the hotel Awhwahnee Bar.
Then, hop on the free Valley Shuttle, which leaves right from the Ahwahnee Yosemite parking lot. It stops at the Visitor Center, historic Curry Village, Yosemite Lodge and Yosemite Falls.
After a day of sightseeing, return to the Yosemite Ahwahnee Hotel for a quick dip in the heated swimming pool, followed by a crisp glass of wine by the grand fireplace. I can't think of a better way to end a day in Yosemite.
Ahwahnee Hotel Reservations should be made at least 5 months and up to one year in advance. Ahwahnee reservations can be made by calling (801) 559-5000 or visiting YosemitePark.com. The Ahwahnee Hotel phone number is (209) 372-1407.
The Ahwahnee Hotel Yosemite is located at 1 Ahwahnee Road, Yosemite National Park, CA 95389.

Yosemite by Train and Bus | United States | 5 Minutes Trip
Yosemite Valley is located on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada mountains, 150 miles (240 km) due east of San Francisco. It stretches for 7.5 miles (12 km) in a roughly east–west direction, with an average width of about 1 mile (1.6 km).
Yosemite Valley represents only one percent of the park area, but this is where most visitors arrive and stay. More than half a dozen creeks tumble from hanging valleys at the top of granite cliffs that can rise 3000–3500 feet (914–1067 m) above the valley floor, which itself is 4000 ft (1219 m) above sea level. These streams combine into the Merced River, which flows out from the western end of the valley, down the rest of its canyon to the San Joaquin Valley. The flat floor of Yosemite Valley holds both forest and large open meadows, which have views of the surrounding crests and waterfalls.
Below is a description of these features, looking first at the walls above, moving west to east as a visitor does when entering the valley, then visiting the waterfalls and other water features, returning east to west with the flow of water.
The first view of Yosemite Valley many visitors see is the Tunnel View. So many paintings were made from a viewpoint nearby that the National Park Service named that viewpoint Artist Point.
Yosemite by Train
The view from the lower (western) end of the Valley contains the great granite monolith El Capitan on the left, and Cathedral Rocks on the right with Bridalveil Fall. Just past this spot the Valley suddenly widens with the Cathedral Spires, then the pointed obelisk of Sentinel Rock to the south.
Yosemite by Train
Across the Valley on the northern side are the Three Brothers, rising one above the other like gables built on the same angle – the highest crest is Eagle Peak, with the two below known as the Middle and Lower Brothers.

Yosemite National Valley is OPEN | FREE ENTRANCE |
Due to the government shutdown, there are many national parks that are closed. When parks are closed, it means that the area is not well-maintained.
Yosemite National Park is an exemption, it is partially closed as there is no entrance free, it is opened because visitors can get in. The visitor center and coffee shop are opened. There are also some rangers in the park, so as the YOSEMITE BUS. Yosemite buses are available for visitors. But campground is closed.
