The ten best places to visit in the Catlins, on the South Island in New Zealand. This video features my favourite places and best things to do and see while you are travelling this beautiful part of New Zealand. Wild coastline, impressive waterfalls and rare animals, you will find it all in the Catlins.
The Southern Scenic Route connects the highlight so you can combine several activities in one day, but do not rush through, as this area deserves your holiday time!

Nugget Point in The Catlins & Balclutha – New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year – BackpackerGuide.NZ
Day 170: It’s the final day of our epic Catlins Road Trip! Our final stop is Nugget Point and then the town of Balclutha which marks the end of our Catlins journey!

The Catlins Coast has been so epic so far with so many things to do in the Catlins! Our final Catlins activity is stopping by the most popular Catlins attraction, Nugget Point.
Nugget Point was named after Captain Cook thought the rocks sticking out of the ocean looked like nuggets. The best view of Nugget Point is via the Nugget Point Walk up to the Nugget Point Lighthouse lookout. It only takes about 10 minutes one way to walk to Nugget Point after a stunning coastal drive from Kaka Point.
Once we reach the Nugget Point lookout we can see a wealth of seabirds and New Zealand fur seals. Nugget Point has a great deal of wildlife so it’s best to take a long lens or binoculars.
After Nugget Point, we hit the road to the town that marks the end of the Catlins Coast, Balclutha. We stop by Naish Park in Balclutha which has a free bird aviary. We stop for lunch before making our way to Dunedin.

Exploring Gore, Southland – New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year – Backpacker Guide New Zealand
Day 164: Yes, we are still in the town of Gore with a lot more things to do in Gore! First, we check out the Eastern Southland Gallery, then we head to Dolamore Park for some hiking and camping in Gore! What’s more, these are both free things to do in Gore!

After yesterday, checking out the Moonshine Museum and St James Theatre in Gore, we have found even more things to do in Gore in the Southland region of New Zealand! Join us for the Eastern Southland Gallery and Dolamore Park in Gore!
This morning, we pop into the Eastern Southland Gallery, an art gallery in Gore and a free thing to do in Gore! The Eastern Southland Art Gallery is set in a historic library and really has a huge offering of art from all over the world. This New Zealand art gallery is pretty huge. We did not expect this in such a quiet corner of New Zealand!
After the art gallery, we head back to Dolamore Park which is where we have been camping for the last couple of days while in Gore. Dolamore Park has cheap powered sites for campervans, as well as a wealth of hikes in Gore and even mountain biking trails in Gore. We go check out one of the Dolamore Park walks that goes through the forest foothills of the Hokonui Hills. Dolarmore Park is well worth checking out for some walks in Gore.

After an awesome day on our Catlins Road Trip yesterday, we are hitting the road once again to explore more of the Catlins Coast! This time, we are heading to Curio Bay!
Curio Bay in the Catlins is not only a location of an ancient fossilised forest (or petrified forest), it is also a place to spot yellow-eyed penguins for free. However, we are not here are the right time of day to see penguins. We are here at low tide to fully explore the petrified forest at Curio Bay.
After Curio Bay, we head next door to Porpoise Bay to have ice cream and go to a viewpoint over the Catlins Coast.
Finally, Niagara Falls New Zealand is on our itinerary. It is said to be the smallest waterfall in New Zealand. We can’t believe this is the first waterfall in the Catlins we are going to see when the Catlins is famous for its Catlins waterfalls.

Travelling the Catlins: McLean Falls & Tautuku Estuary – New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year
Day 169: Yep, we’re still travelling the Catlins and that’s because there are so many things to do in the Catlins! Today, we are checking out McLean Falls, one of the best waterfalls in the Catlins, and Tautuku Estuary.

Today is our fourth day of our Catlins Road Trip and this morning we are checking out McLean Falls! McLean Falls is often said to be the most impressive of the Catlins’ waterfalls so let’s go check it out!
The waterfall is only 2km drive from our accommodation at the Whistling Frog Resort so we get there early to stay the McLean Falls Walk taking about 20 minutes to walk through the forest and to the waterfall. The waterfall is magnificent and a must do in the Catlins!
Next on our itinerary is the Tautuku Estuary Walk. This is another of the short walks in the Catlins which is best done at sunrise or sunset – however it is overcast when we walk it so we just get to enjoy the estuary views and diverse eco-system of this wetland area.
