The town of Palmerston, in New Zealand's South Island, lies 50 kilometres to the north of the city of Dunedin. It is the largest town in the Waihemo Ward of the Waitaki District, with a population of 890 residents. Palmerston grew at a major road junction: State Highway 1 links Dunedin and Waikouaiti to the south with Oamaru and Christchurch to the north, while State Highway 85 heads inland to become the principal highway of the Maniototo. The Main South Line railway passes through the town and the Seasider tourist train travels from Dunedin to Palmerston and back once or twice a week. Palmerston North is a city in the North Island of New Zealand and the seat of the Manawatu-Wanganui region. Located in the eastern Manawatu Plains, the city is near the north bank of the Manawatu River, 35 km from the river's mouth, and 12 km from the end of the Manawatu Gorge. It is about 140 km north of the capital, Wellington. The official limits of the city take in rural areas to the south, north-east, north-west and west of the main urban area, extending to the Tararua Ranges; including the town of Ashhurst at the mouth of the Manawatu Gorge, the villages of Bunnythorpe and Longburn in the north and west respectively. The Katiki Point Lighthouse, also known as Moeraki Lighthouse, shone for the first time in 1878, following several accidents on the dangerous reefs around the area, to make the area safer for ships that sailed past on their way to Port Chalmers, Dunedin. The lighthouse was built between the settlements of Moeraki and Katiki, on the tip of the Moeraki Peninsula, which is known as Katiki Point or Moeraki Point.

The Moeraki Boulders are unusually large and spherical boulders lying along a stretch of Koekohe Beach on the wave-cut Otago coast of New Zealand between Moeraki and Hampden. They occur scattered either as isolated or clusters of boulders within a stretch of beach where they have been protected in a scientific reserve. The erosion by wave action of mudstone, comprising local bedrock and landslides, frequently exposes embedded isolated boulders. These boulders are grey-colored septarian concretions, which have been exhumed from the mudstone enclosing them and concentrated on the beach by coastal erosion.In 1848 W. B. D. Mantell sketched the beach and its boulders, more numerous than now. The picture is now in the Alexander Turnbull Library in Wellington. The boulders were described in 1850 ...

Waikouaiti is a small town in East Otago, New Zealand, within the city limits of Dunedin. The town is close to the coast and the mouth of the Waikouaiti River. Today, Waikouaiti is a retail trade and servicing centre for the surrounding district, which has sheep farming as the principal primary activity. A major egg producer, Zeagold Foods, a branch of Mainland Poultry LTD has a 500,000-hen factory farming operation here and is in the process of expanding over the next year to meet demand for egg products. Hawksbury, 3 km southwest of Waikouaiti, has a cheese factory and shop, a swimming pool and housing developed from the old mental health institution, Cherry Farm. Karitane, 3 km to the southeast has a small fishing port.

The Elephant Rocks near Duntroon in North Otago, New Zealand, are a collection of large weathered limestone rocks. They are located on a private farm 5 kilometres south of Duntroon, in the Maerewhenua Valley. The wider area around Duntroon is known for its interesting geology and preserved fossils.The Elephant Rocks are the weathered remnants of the Otekaike Limestone formation which lies above the Oligocene Kokoamu Greensand. The rock formations of the Elephant Rocks vary from 1–10 metres across and are naturally scattered around a grass paddock on a gentle hillside over an area of about 200 metres across. Day 66: Today we are doing as many things to do in Palmerston North as possible, including biking the Manawatu River Pathway, visiting the Rugby Museum and more!

About this video:

Today we are doing it all in Palmerston North. We have an action-packed day in Palmerston North so let’s begin!

First we hire some electric bikes from the Palmerston North i-SITE to explore Palmerston North. We do the Manawatu River Pathway which is an awesome little trail along the Manawatu River. Biking the Manawatu River Pathway is a great way to see Palmerston North and a great thing to do in Palmerston North.

We cycle back into the city centre where we visit the New Zealand Rugby Museum. The New Zealand Rugby Museum goes through the history of rugby in New Zealand and talks about all things the All Blacks. The New Zealand Rugby Museum is an absolute must-do in Palmerston North for any rugby fan.

Finally, we arrive back at The Square in Palmerston North and get ready for tonight’s activities. First up, we check out the Village Night Market in the Palmerston North Library. After seeing the Village Night Market in Palmerston North, we get some food at the Palmerston North Food Truck Feast in teh The Square with all sorts of international flavours and live music.

After an action-packed day in Palmerston North doing as many things to do in Palmerston North as possible, we relax in our awesome budget accommodation The Railway Hotel Backpackers.
