Middlemarch is a small town in the Otago region of New Zealand's South Island. It lies at the foot of the Rock and Pillar Range of hills in the broad Strath-Taieri valley, through which flows the middle reaches of the Taieri River. Since local government reorganisation in the late 1980s, Middlemarch and much of the Strath-Taieri has been administered as part of Dunedin city, the centre of which lies some 80 km to the southeast. Sutton Salt Lake in Otago, is New Zealand's only inland salt water lake. It is located 10 kilometres west of Sutton, in the Strath Taieri. The lake is filled only by rainwater and dries up during periods of warm weather and little rain.Sutton Salt Lake is also unique in that it lies in a region of windy cool-temperate maritime climate. This makes it different from most of the world's saline lakes, which usually form in arid continental landscapes. The total area of the lake, when the shallow depression is filled with rainwater, is nearly two hectares. The nearest coast is 50 kilometers from the lake.The area around Sutton Lake gets 500 mm of rainfall annually. The Otago Central Rail Trail is a 150-kilometre walking, cycling and horse riding track in the South Island of New Zealand. A pioneering project for New Zealand, the successful cycle trail joined the New Zealand Cycle Trail umbrella organisation in 2012, having been one of the inspirations for it.The trail runs in an arc between Middlemarch and Clyde, along the route of the former Otago Central Railway. The trail has become a popular tourist attraction, with 10,000–12,000 users per year as a conservative estimate, and yearly user increases for 6 out of the last 7 years . The trail is also accepted as being, by a large margin, the biggest non-farming economic factor in the Maniototo-Alexandra area.

The Roxburgh Branch was a branch line railway built in the Otago region of New Zealand's South Island that formed part of the country's national rail network. Originally known as the Lawrence Branch, it was one of the longest construction projects in New Zealand railway history, beginning in the 1870s and not finished until 1928. The full line was closed in 1968.

The Clutha River / Mata-Au is the second longest river in New Zealand and the longest in the South Island. It flows south-southeast 338 kilometres through Central and South Otago from Lake Wanaka in the Southern Alps to the Pacific Ocean, 75 kilometres south west of Dunedin. It is the highest volume river in New Zealand, and the swiftest, with a catchment of 21,960 square kilometres , discharging a mean flow of 614 cubic metres per second . The Clutha River is known for its scenery, gold-rush history, and swift turquoise waters. A river conservation group, the Clutha Mata-Au River Parkway Group, is working to establish a regional river parkway, with a trail, along the entire river corridor. The name of the river was changed to a dual name by the Ngai Tahu Claims Settlement Act 1998.

Otago Central Rail Trail, Clyde to Omakau

Day one (of 4) of a trip on the OCRT in February 2015. Started in Alexandra, and rode to Clyde, then went of trail and followed the river trail back to Alex, where the rail trail was rejoined. From 21st November - 30th November 2012, we went on an overseas holiday to the South Island of New Zealand. While we were there, we did a few railway activities.

The Railway Activities we did were:

A Trip on the Coastal Pacific from Christchurch - Picton - 29th November

Cycling High Country Rail Trail 2015

Cycling High Country Rail Trail 2015 is a 4-minute 720p hi-def video showing an enjoyable 40km bike ride from Wodonga to Tallangatta by Andrew and Trevor on Monday 30th March 2015. We began the day with a car shuffle to leave a car at Tallangatta and then from the water tower at Wodonga, we rode on our hybrid bikes to Kangaroo General Store at Bonegilla for morning tea.
Then passing many attractions, admiring great scenery beside Lake Hume, and after crossing the 600 metre long Sandy Creek Bridge, we eventually arrived at Tallangatta where we had a late lunch at Mj's Bakery. We enjoyed great weather, but November could be a better time as more water would be in Lake Hume.
