Nugget Point in The Catlins & Balclutha – New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year – BackpackerGuide.NZ
Day 170: It’s the final day of our epic Catlins Road Trip! Our final stop is Nugget Point and then the town of Balclutha which marks the end of our Catlins journey!

Tomorrow – Day 171 ➜

-- About this video --
The Catlins Coast has been so epic so far with so many things to do in the Catlins! Our final Catlins activity is stopping by the most popular Catlins attraction, Nugget Point.
Nugget Point was named after Captain Cook thought the rocks sticking out of the ocean looked like nuggets. The best view of Nugget Point is via the Nugget Point Walk up to the Nugget Point Lighthouse lookout. It only takes about 10 minutes one way to walk to Nugget Point after a stunning coastal drive from Kaka Point.
Once we reach the Nugget Point lookout we can see a wealth of seabirds and New Zealand fur seals. Nugget Point has a great deal of wildlife so it’s best to take a long lens or binoculars.
After Nugget Point, we hit the road to the town that marks the end of the Catlins Coast, Balclutha. We stop by Naish Park in Balclutha which has a free bird aviary. We stop for lunch before making our way to Dunedin.
So what do you think of Nugget Point in the Catlins and the town of Balclutha? Would you add these to your Catlins itinerary? LUK in the comments.

Milford Sound Ferry Tour. Part 3.
Milford Sound Ferry Tour. Part 3.
Milford Sound is the most well-known and most accessible of all the fiords in New Zealand's Fiordland National Park, a World Heritage Area. Its 16 kilometre (14 nautical miles) length is lined by sheer rock faces that soar 1,200 metres (3,900 ft) or more from the water. At 1692 metres, the iconic Mitre Peak is a spectacular sight and New Zealand's most photographed mountain.
Milford Sound is in the heart of a rainforest (annual rainfall is 6,813mm or 268 inches) which creates walls of temporary waterfalls on a wet day receding to just two permanent waterfalls (Lady Bowen Falls and Stirling Falls) in drier conditions.
It rains for around a 180 days of the year, with rainfall reaching 250mm (10 in) over a 24 hour period.
The temperature in Milford can vary depending on the season and can go from an average high of around 19C in summer (Dec - Feb) to around 9.5C in winter (Jun - Aug).
Milford Sound is believed to have been discovered by the Maori over 1,000 years ago. They named the sound Piopiotahi after the legend of a single Piopio bird which flew here mourning the death of its partner.
Milford Sound was not discovered by Europeans until 1812 when Captain John Grono named it Milford Haven after his homeland in Wales. Its name was later changed to Milford Sound by Captain John Lort Stokes.
The fiord's natural beauty soon became well known. The Mackinnon Pass was discovered in 1888 and soon became part of the Milford Track -- now one of the world's great.
Ep 6 Nugget Point and Steampunk
Hello lovelies it's Kyla and Aaron, a Canadian couple from BC who love to travel! We are currently on a 5 month road trip in New Zealand and loving it. In this Episode we get a dose of some salty sea air looking out over gorgeous Nugget Point in the South Island and get a little weird at a steampunk head quarters in Oamaru. Note the walk down to the light house at Nugget Point only takes 20 minutes and is an easy, sloping path. The entry fee for steampunk HQ was $10NZ per adult. Make sure to hold off paying for a blue penguin tour if you have the time to go on an adventure for yourself because there are many places to see them around the island :)

Zealandia Wildlife Sanctuary in Wellington - New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year – BackpackerGuide.NZ
Day 77: Today we are seeing New Zealand wildlife up-close at the Zealandia wildlife sanctuary in Wellington! Join us for native birds at the Zealandia Ecosanctuary.

-- About this video --
Today on New Zealand’s Biggest Gap Year web series we are visiting Zealandia in Wellington. Zealandia is a wildlife sanctuary in New Zealand with a protective predator proof fence. Native birds are abundant here where it is safe from invasive pests. We learn a lot about the native ecosystem and the threat of introduced pests at the Zealandia Museum.
After being given a map of multiple walks around Zealandia in Wellington, we start walking to see more and more New Zealand birds. We see kaka, tui, takahe, North Island robin, shags and so much more!
Feeding stations in Zealandia allow you to see New Zealand native birds up-close.
We also bump into one of the Zealandia Ecosanctuary volunteers who gives us a quick tour of Zealandia to explain more about the native plants and birds of New Zealand. We even see the weta, a giant New Zealand insect.
If you want to learn about New Zealand’s eco-system, it’s native wildlife and the New Zealand birds, then Zealandia Ecosanctuary in Wellington is a great place to start to get informed.
So what do you think of Zealandia in Wellington? Is this wildlife sanctuary in Wellington a place you would put on your New Zealand bucket list?
