Nottingham is one of three major cities in the East Midlands of England, the others being nearby Leicester and Derby. Nottingham has links to the legend of Robin Hood and tobacco industries. The heart of the city is the Old Market Square. Nottingham is a tourist destination.
LOCATION
Nottingham is 128 miles (206 km) north of London, 45 miles (72 km) northeast of Birmingham and 56 miles (90 km) southeast of Manchester, in the East Midlands.
Nottingham is situated on an area of low hills along the lower valley of the River Trent, and is surrounded by the Sherwood Forest in the north, the Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Yorkshire Coalfield in the west, and the Trent and Belvoir Vales in the east and south.
HISTORY
The Anglo-Saxon settlement was originally confined to the area today known as the Lace Market and was surrounded by a substantial defensive ditch and rampart. Nottingham Castle was constructed in 1068 on a sandstone outcrop by the River Leen. During the Industrial Revolution, much of Nottingham's prosperity was founded on the textile industry; in particular, the city became an internationally important centre of lace manufacture.
SPORTS
It is also a major sporting centre. The National Ice Centre, Holme Pierrepont National Watersports Centre, and Trent Bridge international cricket ground are all based in or around the city, which is also the home of two professional league football teams.
CLIMATE
Like most of the United Kingdom, Nottingham has a temperate oceanic climate and experiences warm mild summers and mild to cool winters with abundant precipitation throughout the year.
COMMUNICATION
East Midlands Airport - Nottingham, lies south-west of Nottingham and flights are available to many international destinations. Nottingham has an award-winning public transport system, including the largest publicly owned bus network in England and is also served by Nottingham railway station and the modern Nottingham Express Transit tram system.
ECONOMY
Its prosperity is historically derived mostly from the lace making and coal-mining industries, little of which now remains. Nottingham has moved towards a more service-based economy. Its metropolitan economy is the seventh largest in the United Kingdom. Its economy lies on low-carbon technologies; digital media; life sciences; financial and business services; and retail and leisure.

Hucknall, formerly known as Hucknall Torkard, is a town in Nottinghamshire, England, in the district of Ashfield. The town was historically a centre for framework knitting and then for mining, but is now a focus for other industries as well as providing housing for workers in Nottingham.
The town is notable as the site where Rolls-Royce made the first demonstration of a vertical take-off plane. It is also the final resting place of Lord Byron and his estranged daughter, the mathematician and pioneer computer programmer Ada Lovelace.
Hucknall is 7 miles (11 km) northwest of Nottingham on the west bank of the Leen Valley, on land which rises from the Trent Valley in the south to the hills of the county north of Kirkby-in-Ashfield. The Whyburn or 'Town Brook' flows through the town centre, and Farleys Brook marks its southern boundary.
The town’s highest point is Long Hill, (although Beauvale estate has a higher elevation and is situated at the base of Leivers Hill, commonly mistaken for Misk Hill) at 460 ft (140 m) above sea-level, with views over the city and Trent Valley, which descends to between 22 and 24 metres AOD, flowing just beyond most of the city centre.
The town is surrounded by farmland or parkland. To the north-west lie Misk Hills and Annesley. To the north-east town are the villages of Linby and Papplewick beyond these two is Newstead Abbey and its grounds, once the residence of Lord Byron. To the west lies Eastwood, birthplace of D. H. Lawrence, and the inspiration for many of his novels. To the east of the town is Bestwood Country Park.
The contiguous settlements of Butler's Hill and Westville often appear as distinct entities on maps, but are generally regarded as part of Hucknall, and are part of its historic and present-day Church of England parish, although the town itself has no civil parish council, however the identity is reinforced by being part of the post town and by being shared wards of Hucknall.
Hucknall was once a thriving market town. Its focal point is the parish church of St. Mary Magdalene, next to the town’s market square. The church was built by the Anglo-Saxons and completed after the Norman Conquest, though much of it has been restored during the Victorian era. The medieval church consisted only of a chancel, nave, north aisle and tower but it was considerably enlarged in the Victorian period. In 1872 the south aisle was added and in 1887 the unusually long transepts, while the rest of the building apart from the tower was thoroughly restored.
The town is the northern terminus for the Nottingham Express Transit tram system as well as sharing a station on the Robin Hood Line. There is also a stop at Butler's Hill/Broomhill. The town used to be on the A611 but this has now bypassed the town to the west with a single-carriageway road with roundabouts, with access to junction 27 of the M1, some 3 miles away. The tram line was built from 2002–2004 and currently runs from Hucknall to the Station Street terminus next to Nottingham railway station.

Cemetery Seek: Radcliffe on Trent
It may be dreary outside but does that ever stop me? Onwards to the cemetery!
Though the church of Radcliffe on Trent was under repair, the grave stones dating back to the 1700's bore beautiful art.
If anyone knows the origin of the whipping post please let me know. It seems pretty self explanatory but I'm hoping it doesnt have such a ghastly past.

Getting Into The Festive Mood At The Black Country Living Museum// I'm slowly getting into the festive mood!! What about you? Are your decorations up already? Usually we don't start before December so instead we went to the beautiful Black Country Living Museum which is a fantastic open-air museum with rebuilt historic buildings and some great Fish & Chips!! There was some Christmas pudding smell in the air as people were preparing for the festive season. So fab!
