With more than 3000 hours of Sun per year and a coastline over 1000 kilometres long, Andalusia is one of the main family destinations of Spain and Europe. Almeria is a beautiful Andalusian city that perfectly combines its medieval past with modern people today. A coastal town where you can find mixed with modern buildings, boardwalks, canals and plenty of attractions castles.
I leave a brief guide to Almeria so you can organize your trip to this city:
- Areas: in the historic district and the Barrio de la Chanca, areas where you can find much of the heritage of Muslims left in the city. In the rest of the city it is where you will see the most modern buildings.
- Streetwise: If you like loitering you the locations of Las Ramblas, Paseo de Almeria and San Nicolas Salmeron Park. In these places you also several shops and interesting architecture.
- The Monumental Alcazaba: This is spectacular and one of the attractions of the city. You can find ponds, baths, a Moorish chapel, a medina and a Christian site. It is a must if you're in Almería, especially the Alcazaba, which was built on top of a hill and from there you have spectacular views.
- Cathedral of Our Lady of the Incarnation: A fortress built in the fifteenth century and has a solid, strong exterior, while the interior is Gothic and Renaissance. A dramatic contrast of styles and nothing to see inside with what is seen from outside.
- Parroquia de San Juan: It is the sixteenth century and is considered the jewel of the city. It was built on the remains of the Great Mosque of the Muslim era and is in the Chafarinas Square.
- Museums: You have very interesting and varied museums like the Archaeological Museum, the Museo Antonio Manuel Campoy, Art Center, the Diocesan Museum of Sculpture, The Museum of Olive Oil or Morera Museum of Painting. Very interesting also the Provincial History Archive which will see all the ancient history of the province.
- Manor houses: They are very important in the history of the city part and now house many places like the Cultural Casino, the Cervantes Theatre, the House of Music, the Vicomte de Almansa Palace or the House of the Puche.
- Archbishop's Palace: It is opposite the cathedral and is a spectacular building with turrets, battlements and buttresses.
