Discover the Real Downton Abbey Village at Bampton , Plan your Visit
Bampton Village was used as the location for Downton Abbey Village, the Abbey itself was Highclere Castle some 30 miles away just south of Newbury. See the video to understand how unspoilt Bampton is, how little work was required to return Bampton to Edwardian England. In the video you see Downton's St Michael's Church, Mrs Crawley's house, and along Church View The Cottage Hospital, The Post Office and Dog and Duck Pub. Watch this video to help you plan your trip. The leaflet seen in the video may be found in St Mary the Virgin Church.
I watched the start of the new series and Bampton featured a great deal in Mary's Wedding, her carriage passing the Cottage Hospital and arriving at the green.
Bampton which was previously an isolated Oxfordshire Village with no important through road fears the loss of its privacy. Coachloads of tourists from all over the world are starting to arrive to arrive in sleepy Bampton yet they are not prepared have no tea-rooms, souvenir shop, limited parking etc. The Library (Cottage Hospital in Downton) has some tourist information and sells a few souvenirs however has the usual library opening hours. There is a Coffee Shop in the Market Place plus some lively pubs.
If you manage to visit Bampton soon you will still find it utterly unspoiled. Downton Abbey has just won three Emmys. There are several bed and breakfast's in Bampton , including Wheelgate House, The Coach House and Upham House Bed & Breakfast if you could stay in Bampton that would be the best way to get the period feel of the village
also as many of the villagers have appeared in Down as extras I'm sure you get get to hear real inside information.
Bampton has for generations been renowned for its Morris Dancing traditions which are still celebrated today.
The nearest town to Bampton is Witney, so arrive by London, M40, Oxford, Witney, Bampton.
Some other tidbits , Shilton was used for the bus going through a ford scene, the delightful Swan Pub at Swinbrook has also appeared. The current library was formerly a Grammar School and if you look carefully at Bampton in Downton Abbey you will notice the odd TV aerial.
There is a village in England called Downton (Wiltshire/Somerset border) but it has nothing to do with Downton Abbey but has experienced a tourist boom anyway!
The last series is about to begin!

Places to see in ( Burford - UK )
Places to see in ( Burford - UK )
Burford is a medieval town on the River Windrush in the Cotswold hills in West Oxfordshire, England. It is often referred to as the 'gateway' to the Cotswolds. Burford is located 18 miles (29 km) west of Oxford and 22 miles (35 km) southeast of Cheltenham, about 2 miles (3 km) from the Gloucestershire boundary. The toponym derives from the Old English words burh meaning fortified town or hilltown and ford, the crossing of a river.
Burford Priory is a country house that stands on the site of a 13th-century Augustinian priory hospital. In the 1580s an Elizabethan house was built incorporating remnants of the building. It was remodelled in Jacobean style, probably after 1637, by which time the estate had been bought by William Lenthall, Speaker of the House of Commons in the Long Parliament. After 1912 the house and later the chapel were restored for the philanthropist Emslie John Horniman, M.P., by the architect Walter Godfrey.
From 1949 Burford Priory housed the Society of the Salutation of Our Lady, a community of Church of England nuns. In the 1980s, its numbers dwindled, so in 1987 it became a mixed community including Church of England Benedictine monks. In 2008 the community sold the property and it is now a private dwelling. Burford has twice had a bell-foundry: one run by the Neale family in the 17th century and the other run by the Bond family in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Local legend tells of a fiery coach containing Sir Lawrence Tanfield of Burford Priory and/or his wife flying around the town that brings a curse upon all who see it. Andrews speculates that the apparition may have been caused by a local tradition of burning effigies of the unpopular couple that began after their deaths. The visitations were reportedly ended when local clergymen trapped Lady Tanfield's ghost in a corked glass bottle during an exorcism and cast it into the River Windrush. During droughts locals would fill the river from buckets to ensure that the bottle did not rise above the surface and free the spirit.

The LONGEST stone bridge in England - Swarkestone Bridge, want to drive across it?
This video is about a local bridge.
Swarkestone Bridge and Causeway is the longest stone bridge in England. It is 1.2 Kilometres long (¾ of a mile).
Perhaps you drive over this bridge and spare little thought for it, Perhaps you should as its a Grade one listed Ancient Monument, built in the 13th/14th century and its being destroyed by todays heavy traffic.
A website has even been setup to try and raise public awareness to its declining condition.
The bridge starts next to the Crewe and Harpur Arms at Swarkestone and travels for just under one mile to the village of Stanton by Bridge.
The bridge that goes over the River Trent was rebuilt in 1797, the remains of the original bridge were washed away but the foundations probably remain which is why its very rough water below the bridge.
The rest of the bridge (The Causeway) still survives to this day and winds its way across the marshy wetlands.
According to local legend, the building of Swarkestone Bridge in the 13th century is attributable to two sisters who saw their lovers drowned trying to cross the River Trent on horseback.
They crossed the flooded meadows safely, but then either missed the ford altogether, or were swept off by the strong current. The horrified sisters saw all this happen through a hall window and vowed to ensure no else met the same fate.
They spent the rest of their lives building the bridge and died penniless as a result.

Some details about my video :
00:00 This is a view of the part of the bridge that goes over the river Trent, this part was built in 1797. To the right of the bridge is the Crewe and Harpur Arms. To the left is the Causeway part of the bridge.
00:10 Time-lapse sequence I shot showing how much traffic uses this bridge. This sequence is made from 959 individual photographs which I took on Thursday 22nd May 2008, the first frame was taken at 15:48:22 and the last one at 16:03:18. If you were on the bridge in this time window then you will be in this time-lapse sequence.
00:48 Photographs showing the bridge from many angles. Its such a long bendy bridge its hard to capture the sheer size of it in one photograph.
01:24 A real-time drive from Swarkestone to Stanton-by-bridge.
01:38 The road on the right leads to the hamlet of Ingleby, where you will find the John Thompson pub.
02:02 The bus mounts the curb !!! No wonder this poor bridge is crumbling away.
02:42 Narrow bit which you have to be aware of as you can end up hitting someone.
03:16 Very Narrow bit.
03:34 End of the bridge so time to do a u-turn and go back in the other direction...
03:48 A real-time drive from Stanton-by-bridge to Swarkestone.
05:26 A few photos showing the type of heavy vehicles that this bridge has to cope with.
05:39 END
