So consider this Dutch supermarket food tour as a shopping list of what to buy and try when you visit the Netherlands. You can get all your souvenirs at the Albert Heijn. Us Dutchies also do our groceries here and their quality is really good. The shop right behind Dam Square even has really cute Dutch Food souvenir packagings! Serbian Great War monument in the Netherlands
This is the only Serbian military monument in the Netherlands. It is devoted to the Serbian soldiers fallen in the Great War. It is located in the village of Garderen in the municipality of Barneveld. Every 1st October there is a commemoration.

Dutch demographics - The Netherlands from above
How do we deal with the imminent population shrinkage? The Netherlands stands at a turning point. After a long period of growth, we first stifle for a century in a period of shrinkage. In Drenthe, a primary school must close again because there are insufficient children while in the West many young families look back in the old towns. The decline of the population and the trek from the shrinkage areas poses new questions. Unlike before, we will no longer be led by the church or by the government when it comes to the direction of our country. But history teaches that we always find ways to solve issues. We are finally able to see the end of problems in the area of Amsterdam Zuid-oost (south west), and to say hello to a brighter future.
The Netherlands from above shows us a country from a spectacular perspective. From the sky it is possible to see how the Netherlands changes through the seasons, and how in parallel they form the determining moments of our own life cycle. Through data visuals, impressive aerial images and portraits of people on the ground, the second series of the Netherlands from above outlines an image of how time has changed our country and how we move in it. The way we live from day to day, and from generation to generation in this country reflects our resilient mentality. The Netherlands from above season 2 tells us the story of seeing and taking opportunities, falling and rising up again, reinventing the wheel again and again. Where the first series was an ode to the makeable Netherlands, this second series is an ode to our resilience.

Groceries shopping @ Albert Heijn Netherlands (5.30.10 - Full HD)
Today I went down to Albert Heijn to get me some groceries. Albert Heijn is one of the most common A-brand supermarkets in The Netherlands and well known by the public, which usually refers to the supermarket as AH or Appie. Because of this, they named their iPhone app Appie.
The supermarket we see in this video is one of the common, largest version of the regular AH formula. They do have a couple of supermarkets which are a bit larger than this, called AH XL, but they aren't even that much bigger. Apart from that, we don't really have the kind of large supermarkets other countries are used to, except for maybe the Makro stores, which are only available for you to shop at if you're a retailer yourself. I figure the lack of these large supermarkets in our country is the reason we still have so many specialty stores around, usually the size of a minimart or smaller..
Anyway, on my way over to the supermarket I discovered there was some activity on our neighborhood's central square, called Plein Festival with some kid's activities. There is some footage of that in this video as well.
In the supermarket itself, the first shot shows the machine in which I deposit some bottles. In The Netherlands, like in several other European countries, we pay a deposit on our bottles, which we get back upon returning the bottles to the supermarket. It has been this way for as long as I can recall and a way to prevent unnecessary pollution by stray bottles. I figure it works well, as most people return their bottles.. :)
As far as the supermarket itself is concerned, I needed to sneak in my camera so the footage you see is basically what I got with the camera inside the palm of my hand while steering the shopping-cart. It will however give you an impression of what an average supermarket looks like in The Netherlands. Due to the smaller setting and short business hours compared to other countries, there are usually people around so the kind of shots we know from enormous supermarkets in the US where the visitor is the only shopper at that time are impossible here. Still, if I do get the chance I will sometime try to get some better footage during a future visit to a supermarket.

On the Veluwe lives dwelling and conservative people. In the past, the people there lived completely isolated, the surrounding forest shielded the outside world. The people had to survive by ploughing through the poor sandy soils and for a good harvest the only think they could do was to pray God. Today, these people are rich and no longer depend on the soil: they are slowly letting go of the farm life. The outside world is constantly pushing for taking over, especially with the Internet, but also by going out and working outside the area. Urban problems are no longer avoidable.

Wellness Villa in Lunteren, The Netherlands
