Nº 10.- TEMPLE OF DEBOD
The Temple of Debod is the oldest building in Madrid, although it was not built in our city but in ancient Nubia, in southern Egypt, more than 2.200 years ago.
Also from the Temple of Debod you may find some of the best sunsets ever!
Nº 9.- PLAZA DE LA VILLA
In the Plaza de la Villa is the oldest civil building built in Madrid, it is the Tower and House of the Lujanes, a palace house of the XV century, Gothic-Mudejar style.
There are also two other emblematic buildings: the Casa de Cisneros, a Renaissance palace from the XVI century, and the Casa de la Villa, a baroque palace from the XVII century.
Nº 8.- PUERTA DE ALCALÁ
The ‘Puerta de Alcalá’ is one of the most popular symbols of Madrid. In addition to the monumental function, it served as gateway to the city until just a century and a half ago.
It is the first arch of triumph built in Europe, after the fall of the Roman Empire.
In neoclassical style, it was built in the XVIII century by direct commission of Carlos III.
Nº 7.- GREAT WAY (GRAN VÍA)
The ‘Gran Vía’ is one of the most emblematic streets of Madrid.
Started in 1910, it was settled, The ‘Great Way’ is the main artery of the heart of Madrid. It has many iconic buildings: Metropolis, Telefónica, Capitol and so on.
Nº 6.- CIBELES
The Plaza de Cibeles is one of the most well-known squares in Spain. It is currently located in the Palacio de Comunicaciones - ‘The Palace of Communications’, a beautiful eclectic building from the beginning of the 20th century. Current City hall.
In the center of the square is the famous Fuente de Cibeles ‘Cibeles Fountain’, which is the first of the five mythological fountains that form the Prado Hall, commissioned by Carlos III.
Nº 5.- PLAZA MAYOR (MAYOR SQUARE OF MADRID)
The Plaza Mayor of Madrid suffered 3 frightful fires, in the last of them only the ‘House of Bakery’ was saved, which served as a model for the reconstruction of the square.
The Plaza Mayor of Madrid during 2017 commemorates its IV Centenary, being in 1617 when it began to build, 400 years ago.
Nº 4.- PUERTA DEL SOL (GATE OF THE SUN)
The Puerta del Sol is the heart of Madrid. Social meeting point in which life flows at any time of day or night.
From its beginnings in century XV, in this place have been directed some of the most important events of the history and the Spanish life.
This statue, the Statue of the Bear and the Madroño is famous for alluding to the official shield of the city of Madrid.
Also In Puerta del Sol we find the ‘Real Casa de Correos’ royal house of mail, where the locals meet to hear the chimes every new year.
Nº 3.- PALACIO REAL (ROYAL PALACE DE MADRID)
The Royal Palace and its surroundings are one of the must see in Madrid.
The majestic building that we can contemplate today, dates from the middle of the XVIII century.
Neoclassical style, clearly shows the taste for geometric and proportionate forms, typical of the architecture of enlightened despotism.
It is one of the largest palaces in the world.
It is currently open to the public as a museum.
It is surrounded by beautiful gardens (Campo de Moro, Sabatini Gardens and Gardens of the Plaza de Oriente).
From its surroundings we can enjoy spectacular sunsets.
Nº 2.- RETIRO PARK
Parque del Retiro is one of the most pleasant urban parks in the world.
It is ideal for pleasant walks,sunbathing and even paddling in the center of the city.
This park had its origin in the seventeenth century, as the second residence and place of rest Of King Philip IV. Places of recreation as peculiar as the Grand Lake of Retiro are iconic.
In this park we find other monuments whose visit is essential, such as the Crystal Palace or the curious Fountain of the Fallen Angel.
