Chacchoben Mayan Ruins
You'll journey to the ancient place of Mayan pilgrimage known today as Chacchoben also known as The Place of Red Corn. At the pier, you'll be greeted by a bilingual guide who will direct you to an air-conditioned bus. Onboard the bus your guide will brief you on the interesting history and unique culture of the tour ahead. Upon arrival at Chacchoben you'll be surrounded by jungle. Your guide will escort you through the ruins, giving you complete explanations of the sacred temples and other structures seen there. See original red paint on the stucco walls of one of the pyramids and the temple where a mural was found showing the astronomical positions of the planet Venus. You'll have time to climb the Gran Basamento taking you above tree level. Here archaeologists found ceremonial offerings dating to around 1000 B.C. Your guide will also explain about the wildlife and medicinal plants that are used by the modern-day descendants of the ancient Mayan people.
Note: Tour includes complimentary beverages. There is a government tax of $5-8 US for the use of video cameras at the site. No tripods and/or professional video cameras are allowed. We recommend that you bring insect repellent.

Mahahual Malecón, Costa Maya, Yucatán Peninsula, Quintana Roo, México
Mahahual, México is a village on the Costa Maya in the municipality of Othon P. Blanco on the Caribbean Sea coast of the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico located on the Yucatán Peninsula. Previously a fishing village, it is now a rapidly developing tourist center.
The village of Mahahual is only about 2 miles away from the Costa Maya cruise port, and cruise ships can easily be seen from the village. Mahahual has soft sand beaches, grass thatched palapas, and a coral reef a short distance off-shore called Banco Chinchorro, as well as several bars, restaurants, and shops.
A new development called New Mahahual is being created directly inland from the port. When ships are in port, the village is busy with cruise passengers.
Costa Maya Port started operations in the year of 2001. Since then it has become the second most important cruise ship port in Mexico. It has been recognized in the cruise industry for being one of the leading and most responsive ports in the Caribbean.
Costa Maya's port has a new and modern tourist shopping mall. The center has a central plaza with saltwater pools and 'swim-up' style bars. There are several jewellery stores and many small shops selling ubiquitous souvenir items. It is generally open only to cruise ship passengers.
Costa Maya is the closest port of access to many of the lesser known Mayan ruins in the Yucatan including Chacchoben and Kohunlich. These sites are substantially less excavated than the better known pyramids of Tulum and Coba to the north; Chichen Itza and Uxmal in Yucatan.

Things to Do in Costa Maya While on a Cruise
If you’re lucky enough for Costa Maya to be one of the stops on your next cruise trip, you won’t want to miss the opportunity to get off the boat and experience the magic of Costa Maya Village. Sure, the fact that this port is surrounded by the vast natural beauty of the Mexican Caribbean and the Mayan jungle is a clear draw. But, what makes Costa Maya truly unique is that it is a themed cruise port, offering a wide range of unforgettable opportunities for adventure, culture and relaxation just steps away from the dock.
Check out these fun and exciting things to do in Costa Maya while on a cruise.
Explore the Port
Experience a warm welcome from the locals and enjoy the hospitality and excellent service of the establishments at the port. You can eat delicious Mexican food at the restaurants, buy local products and souvenirs in the stores, or hang out at the beach with a cocktail in hand. You can have a great time in Costa Maya without even stepping foot outside of the port.
Go on an Expedition
If you crave adventure and exciting things to do in Costa Maya near the cruise port, take a guided tour of the beach and the surrounding Mayan jungle while riding an ATV. You can also take a tour of the Chacchoben Mayan Ruins and learn more about ancient Mayan culture. Standing in the shadow of the stone pyramids and temples, you’ll be able to fully appreciate the grandeur of this ancient landmark.
Try a Unique Cultural Experience (or Five)
One of the best ways to experience Mexican culture is to eat, drink, and share experiences with the locals. Enjoy an exclusive tasting of the best tequilas of Mexico or the history of one of the world’s most popular flavors — chocolate — at Kakaw. Go snorkeling, experience exotic birds native to the Caribbean at the aviary, or pamper your body and nurture your spirit by partaking in a Mayan healing ritual.
Visit Costa Maya Adventure Park
To top off your cruise experience, treat your family to a fun day at Maya, Lost Mayan Kingdom Adventure Park. It boasts thrilling water slides, ziplines, and the 400-meter Zip Coaster (the ultimate zip line experience) that goes over land and water. If at some point you need to relax and recharge, there are resting areas throughout the park that you can use to do just that.

Chacchoben 'Lugar Del Maiz Colorado' - Costa Maya Mexico - YouTube
Those who don't know history are destined to repeat it. - Edmund Burke
While Europe languished in the 'Dark Ages' the Mayan civilization flourished with a written language, mathematics including the understanding of zero, science and astronomy and cities grand in design and size. Ten's of thousands inhabited and worked in and around the amazing Mayan cities, urban sprawl, only to time and again abandon the cities and returning to the jungle.
