Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a United States National Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site that straddles the ridgeline of the Great Smoky Mountains, part of the Blue Ridge Mountains, which are a division of the larger Appalachian Mountain chain.
It is the most visited national park in the United States. The border between Tennessee and North Carolina runs northeast to southwest through the centerline of the park. On its route from Maine to Georgia, the Appalachian Trail also passes through the center of the park. The park was chartered by the United States Congress in 1934 and officially dedicated by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1940.
It encompasses 522,419 acres (816.28 sq mi; 211,415.47 ha; 2,114.15 km2), making it one of the largest protected areas in the eastern United States. The main park entrances are located along U.S. Highway 441 (Newfound Gap Road) at the towns of Gatlinburg, Tennessee, and Cherokee, North Carolina. It was the first national park whose land and other costs were paid for in part with federal funds; previous parks were funded wholly with state money or private funds.

Riding the Chief Ladiga Trail. Ride along with Sharon and Ray Steelman as they ride a 27 mile round trip on the Chief Ladiga trail in Alabama. The 34-mile long Chief Ladiga Trail is Alabama's premier rail-trail. It is located in Cleburne and Calhoun counties, in east-central Alabama. The smooth asphalt surface travels through the Tallegeda National Forest and connects to Georgia's Silver Comet Trail to the east (near Cedartown and Esom Hill). The Chief Ladiga and Silver Comet travel over 95 miles when combined, and form the longest paved trail in America. Both trails are non-motorized and are great for walking, bicycling, rollerblading, hiking and dog walking.
From east to west, Chief Ladiga passes through several cities in Alabama: Piedmont, Jacksonville, Weaver, and Anniston.
Both the Chief Ladiga and Silver Comet are:
Built on abandoned rail lines
Currently, the Chief Ladiga ends in northern Anniston. Plans are underway to extend the trail an additional 6 miles, where it will end at Anniston's Amtrak station. Plans are progressing to make the Amtrak station bike friendly; allowing for a return train route to Atlanta, and other cities along the Amtrak line.
Not only will the Amtrak station connect to the Chief Ladiga, but the station is also a short walk to the mountain biking trails located on Coldwater Mountain.
Ghost Towns: Old Cahawba, Alabama
Old Cahawba, Alabama is the second ghost town we visited. Unlike Rodney, Miss. it is now a state park and most of the buildings -- or what's left of them -- are kept up and maintained. There are also historical markers throughout the town explaining the history behind each. We visit a few abandoned houses, a negro burial ground and the former site of a Civil War prison where Union soldiers that were captured were kept.
