Casa San Gabriel, Umbria, Italy
youtube travel videos
Casa San Gabriel is located in one of Italy’s most beautiful valleys, only 20 minutes north of Perugia. Chrissie and David, and their two daughters, chose this area to live on account of its unique natural beauty, stunning views and proximity to Umbria’s wonderful hill towns. Their love of Italian food, wine and the way of life prompted their move to Italy more than 12 years ago. They have converted the original farm houses into three beautiful self contained units of varying sizes. They produce their own wine, olive oil and farm Alpacas. Their family friendly accommodation features a pool and pizza nights using a traditional wood fire oven.

Wine, History and Nature - TBU Umbria Post Conference Blog Trip
An overview of the Wine, History and Nature post conference blog trip, after TBU Umbria.
#visitumbria
Bordering Tuscany in the middle of Italy, Umbria is a region of sweet green hills and sweet chocolate - Baci chocolates, (baci means kisses in Italian) are made here in Perugia. There are lots of attractions for families from vineyards to Italy's highest waterfall, shrouded in mist and shining with rainbows. For kids that love natural history, there's a cave with dinosaur remains and a fossilised forest to visit.
Umbria is the green heart of Italy.

A Walk around the Norman Walls of Trim Castle Co Meath
Is this the largest Norman Castle by area in Ireland? I suspect so.
We are down at Trim Co Meath for a few days break. Trim has got a number of ancient ecclesiastical and castle sites within easy walking distance of the town. Here overlooking the River Boyne is the fantastic Norman Trim Castle featured in Mel Gibson's Braveheart film. With an area of 30,000 m², Trim Castle is the largest Cambro-Norman castle in Ireland. The design of the central three-story keep (also known as a donjon or great tower) is unique for a Norman keep being of cruciform shape, with twenty corners.
Trim Castle (Irish: Caisleán Bhaile Atha Troim) is a Norman castle on the south bank of the River Boyne in Trim, County Meath, Ireland. With an area of 30,000 m², it is the largest Norman castle in Ireland. Over a period of 30 years, it was built by Hugh de Lacy and his son Walter as the caput of the Lordship of Meath.
The castle site was chosen because it is on raised ground, overlooking a fording point on the River Boyne. The area was an important early medieval ecclesiastical and royal site that was navigable in medieval times by boat up the River Boyne, about 25 miles from the Irish Sea. Trim Castle is referred to in the Norman poem The Song of Dermot and the Earl.
During the late Middle Ages, Trim Castle was the centre of administration for Meath and marked the outer northern boundary of The Pale. In the 16th and 17th centuries it had declined in importance, except as a potentially important military site, and the castle was allowed to deteriorate. During the 15th century the Irish Parliament met in Trim Castle seven times and a mint operated in the castle.
The Castle fell into decline in the 16th century but was refortified during the Irish Confederate Wars in the 1640s. In 1649 after the sacking of Drogheda, the garrison of Trim fled to join other Irish forces and the place was occupied by the army of Oliver Cromwell.

Kaunas Castle. Outside and Inside.
Kaunas Castle
The city's 13th century Castle, probably built by Kęstutis to defend the road to Trakai, was the country's first defensive bastion and the only double-walled castle in Lithuania. The surrounding walls were initially over two metres wide and 13m high. Unlike most other castles of the time this one was made of stone, not wood. However, in 1362, after a siege, the Teutonic Knights managed to destroy it, although local legend has it that the Castle was not destroyed and that 36 survivors remained. These survivors along with the Knights are allegedly still burning in an eternal fire which can only be extinguished by an innocent person entering the Castle via a secret cave. However, history books dictate that it was destroyed and its replacement, some of which can be viewed at the site today, was built by 1368. The Castle has been modernised with sleek glass windows enclosing the top, and is sometimes home to art exhibitions. The building recently received a 1.16Lt million facelift, which included the restoration of several architectural elements as well as the construction of a traditional wooden bridge over the former moat.
