Frigiliana Spain Travel Diary
Frigiliana is a beautiful village on a hilltop just a few kilometers north of Nerja, in the beautiful Costa del Sol region of Malaga, Spain. I spent a few days exploring the village, hiking, going to the beach, watching a Spanish parade, and savoring the delicious Spanish cuisine. While the village gets quite busy with tourists in the middle of the day, in the mornings and evenings it's peaceful and quiet. There are lots of little boutique shops an art galleries along with plenty of restaurants to choose from. It's a fantastic retreat from the fast-paced nature of the world today.

In 2013, I went to Spain and it was my first trip to Europe as an adult. This country has lots to offer, so we mostly visited the south of Spain, more specifically the Andalusia region.
We visited cities such as Malaga, Torremolinos, Seville, Montilla, Baena, Granada, Ronda, Cordoba, Nerja, Frigiliana and took a road trip on the white hill towns on route to our final destination in the old town of Arcos de la Frontera.
Many people dream of travelling to Spain and visiting its many attractions. Where to go? What restaurants are good? What kind of transportation is recommended? What are the costs of such a trip? Are people friendly in that country? What hotels are recommended? Can you rent a car? Thanks to this video, you'll get answers to all these questions and more. Visiting the white village of Frigiliana
The village of Frigiliana is situated six-kilometres north of Nerja and just over fifty kilometres from Málaga. Villages on the Costa del Sol don’t come much more picturesque than Frigiliana. This exceptionally beautiful white-washed village is truly one of a kind.

Welcome to the Costa del Sol. 22 Things To Do in Malaga and the Costa del Sol.
Almost all beaches along the Golden Mile are Blue Flag, with lots of fun activities, shallow waves and plenty of sand. They’re family-friendly, and have disabled access and there’s almost always food of one sort or another close by.
The Marina at Puerto Banus isn’t far from the beach. It may not be the biggest of places of places along the Costa del Sol but it’s certainly a shop-aholic’s haven.
While Benalmadena Marina is a bit more ‘every man’. The vibe here is more family-focused and relaxed and the beach here is huge! If you’re staying around Marbs, you should definitely check out the Ocean Club. TOWIE fans, this is a must!
This is the Mariposario Butterfly Park. 150 species of butterfly flutter and float in the air. They’ve even adopted a pair of iguanas, a tortoise and a wallaby!
Balcon de Europa is just as relaxing as rewarding. The funny thing is, everyone thinks the King actually founded the place… He didn’t, it was a well-known local secret; he just came up with the name.
Frigiliana is a labyrinth of cobbled, winding streets. And what makes it more traditional are these gorgeous white-washed buildings. One of the best things about this place is the views.
You’ll find Orange Square in Marbella Old Town, a medieval courtyard of lively and colourful restaurants, cafes and shops.
A day trip to Malaga should definitely be on the cards. Pablo Picasso was born right here in Malaga in 1881 and became a highly influential artist in painting, sculpture and even print-making, to develop Cubist and Surrealist movements, among others. And this museum is devoted to his works.
Malaga Cathedral dates back to the 1500s. The original design for the cathedral had it with two towers, although now it only has the one. In fact, that second tower was never built because they ran out of money during the building process, thus there’s only one. The locals around here affectionately refer to this building as ‘The Lady with One Arm’ or, La Manquita.
Alcazaba Fort is said to be the city’s most important landmark because of its strategic hilltop position, overlooking the ocean, to watch out for any invaders.
The Nerja Caves are a subterranean labyrinth of stalactites and stalagmites that date back millions of years. Above ground, a beautiful way to see the countryside and meet with the locals is on a John Keo guided walking tour. Bring your lunch, your camera and an ear for local stories. This really is a memorable way to spend a day of your holiday and learn about the natural landscape you’re holidaying in.
The cable car in Benalmadena gives you some of the most beautiful views in the Costa del Sol, at nearly 800m above sea-level.

Le plus beau village d'Andalousie - Frigiliana, le village blanc - Espagne
Frigiliana est un très joli village blanc élu plus beau village d'Andalousie en 1988. Situé en hauteur près de la mer il est toujours aéré.
On peut y flâner dans ses rues en pente et déguster du vin dans une bodega.
On pourrait se croire à Santorin...
Exploring the White Villages of Andalusia, Spain
We rented a car, and a cottage, and traversed the narrow winding streets through the mountains of Andalusia, Spain to explore the beautiful white villages, or Pueblos Blancos.
We started off in Arcos de la Frontera with a really tasty meal. Olives stuffed with anchovies, a duck pate with raspberry jam, and we split a simple grilled mecha sandwich (pork infused with spices). The restaurant was called Café y copas La Vinoteca (
After that, we made a few pit stops in other villages, but we had to rush a bit to check-in at our Airbnb. We booked a couple nights in a cottage near El Gastor. The ride up to the cottage twisted up a hill, past sheep, onto a dirt road, and past olive orchards. The little cottage was exactly what we were looking for. It was quaint, and the views were incredible. There were olive trees on the property, and the owner actually made her own olive oil that she gave us a bottle of when we arrived. She also provided us with coffee that went really well with the breath-taking view. We really loved this place.

The next morning we set our to do a loop around the giant blue watter reservoir.
First we stopped in Algodonales, a town famous for it's fresh spring water which you can drink right out of the town fountain.
Next we made it to Zahara de la Sierra, which was probably the most gorgeous thing I saw the entire 3 weeks we were in Spain. It teeters on limestone cliffs that overlook pretty much everything in Andalusia. The views across the reservoir were amazing. They also have a castle up on the very top, which we hike to and even got to climb to the top of.
After a cold beer, we finished off our day (or at least the video) in Grazalema at a restaurant called Gastrobar la Maroma ( where we ate veal burgers, shredded potatoes with fried chicken and quail egg, and a smoked salmon salad. A great meal that fueled us for a short hike in the area.
This is an incredible part of the world. The mix of Spanish culture and Moorish architecture make it a very unique place with views that will be remembered forever. The food was great. The roads were a blast to drive, and we totally fell in love with the small cottage, cooking up dinner, starting a fire to stay warm, and enjoying the fresh mountain air.
