The Grossglockner High Alpine Road is the highest surfaced mountain pass road in Austria. It connects Bruck in the state of Salzburg with Heiligenblut in Carinthia via Fuscher Törl and Hochtor Pass at 2,504 m . The road is named after the Grossglockner, Austria's highest mountain. Built as a scenic route, a toll is assessed for passage.

It is named after Hallstatt, a small market town in Austria, famous for its salt mining since prehistoric times and the starting point of the world's oldest and still working industrial pipeline – for brine to Bad Ischl and further to Ebensee. Since about 1970/1980 the only ship-mail-line of Austria crossed the lake from the railway on the east shore to the town in the west. In winters the road on the west shore tended to be blocked by high snow or the risk of avalanches. When the ice on the lake was thick enough, a sled pulled by men or horses, later a motorized track vehicle was used to transport mail and persons. Welcome to this budget travel series of adventure and kindness, through the Balkan countries. Apo from Around the Good World is traveling the around the Balkans, having only 200€ in his pocket for 2 months!

On this episode, I managed to hitchhike from Vienna all the way to Graz in one day. Everyone says that Austria is very difficult for hitchhiking, so I guess I was lucky... In Graz, I arrived at the house of Steven, which I met through Couchsurfing and he was was my kind host for 2 awesome days. We hanged around together and the last day he took me outside of the city to start hitchhiking again to my next destination.

European Vacation - Salzburg, Austria - Summer 2015

Lake Garda and Salzburg Areas Summer Vacation (2016)

We spent our summer 2016 vacation in the Lake Garda and Salzburg areas. (We used the Lake Garda area as a midpoint on our way to and from the Salzburg area).

My 7 year old son and I are very active so we look for destinations that will keep us busy. Lake Garda and Salzburg are perfect for this. Actually, I think we only visited Salzburg itself once or twice during our break there. Most of the time we were in the surrounding area (we were actually staying in Germany but it was still only minutes from Salzburg).

I highly recommend these two destinations for anyone with active families: Eagles Nest tour, hiking, mountain biking, explore ice caves, salt mines, zip lining, paragliding and Red Bull Hangar 7. Don't forget to take the kids to Schloss Hellbrunn - bring a towel!
