Episode 24 - Auckland to Bay of Islands, North Island, NZ
After riding in Auckland, crossing Auckland Harbour Bridge, Pakiri Beach, Mangawhai Heads, Whangarei and then passing through a lot of rain. Tutukaka, Hikurangi and Helena Bay, landslide near Oakura Bay, and ends at Bay of Islands.
Mt Cupola Climb - Nelson Lakes, NZ
A second attempt, this time successful, to climb Mt Cupola (2,260m) in Nelson Lakes National Park on the South Island of New Zealand. An awesome forecast saw Greg and I booking a late flight down on a Friday night in July 2016. A drive to St Arnaud, a 7.30am Water Taxi across Rotoriti and 7hrs tramp took us to the beautifully located Cupola Hut. The hut at 1360m is certainly a candidate for the best situated hut in NZ, sitting the middle of a high basin punctuated by Mt Cupola and Mt Hopeless. A cold still and sunny day followed for our summit attempt and the interesting North Face route included maybe 200m of steepish front pointing followed by a loose rock steep (the crux) before easier slopes were gained below the summit.
