New Zealand North Island - Matapouri
Matapouri is a small town on the northeastern coast of the north island and it was one of our favorite places to visit. We started our day here by tailgating out of our station wagon at the top of the hill overlooking the town to catch the morning sunrise.
The beach at Matapouri bay is a gorgeous, white sand beach great for easy swimming and catching some sun. When the tide is low, go to the northern end of the beach to gain access to a trail that will lead you to the mermaid pools. The trail goes up a steep hill, but don’t worry, locals tie ropes between trees to assist your climb. When you get to the other side of the hill, which isn’t very far, you’ll be met with an incredible ocean view and of course the deep emerald mermaid pools. The pools are incredible and especially in the bright sun. I should reiterate that you should only swim in the pools during low tide. Safety first people!
There are some nice hiking trails providing classic New Zealand scenery. The convenience store in town has some solid fish and chips and ice cream if you want some lunch. So, bottom line, is Matapouri worth visiting? Definitely, but only if the weather cooperates.
