A trip to Sandwood Bay, Sutherland
One of our clients, Catriona, was taken ill during her trip to the North West Highlands. It had been her dream to visit a remote beach, Sandwood Bay as part of that holiday. We decided to give her a surprise to make up for her ruined holiday. It was such an honour to learn what these wild places mean to her and be a part of her journey there.

Tour Scotland wee video of photographs of Tongue, Sutherland. This is a coastal village in the north west Highlands. It lies on the east shore above the base of the Kyle of Tongue and north of the mountains Ben Hope and Ben Loyal. To the north lies the area of Braetongue. Tongue is the main village in a series of crofting townships that runs through Coldbackie, Dalharn, Blandy, and the harbour of Scullomie to the deserted township of Slettel. The area was an historic crossroad for Gaels, Picts and Vikings. Castle Varrich near to the village was the ancient seat of the chief of the Clan Mackay. George Washington Campbell was born on February 9, 1769 in Tongue, was an American statesman who served as a U.S. Representative, Senator, Tennessee Supreme Court Justice, U.S. Ambassador to Russia and the 5th United States Secretary of the Treasury from February to October 1814. He died in 1848 and is buried at Nashville City Cemetery in Nashville, Tennessee. Of interest to folks with ancestry, genealogy or Scottish Family Roots in Scotland who may wish to visit one day.

4/32 Salcombe to Weymouth – In brilliant weather
We’d left Salcombe early - the plan had been to top up with fuel at Dartmouth but the conditions were so perfect that we just headed out across Lyme Bay, a three hour cruise to Weymouth. You don’t often get conditions so good off Portland Bill though even in these calm conditions, the beginning of the tide race are clear to see.
Where are we?
Weymouth. Pulling in for fuel, a good fried breakfast and a bit of a shop, catch up with the provisions we have found we are missing already and head on east! But I’m about to hit one of the Tall Ships that has just pulled out in front of me!
A good breakfast on the quayside and time to roll on. We’d filled up with fuel here, we have probably covered around 130 nautical miles and we took 360 litres - I don’t want to do the maths to work out just how much we will have used by the end of the trip.
These are our first chalk cliffs of the trip. Families were making the most of the April sun at Durdle Door, probably the first good beaching day of the year. We nosed into Lulworth for a look around, but didn’t stop, we just wanted to keep rolling.
Dover’s white cliffs are famous, but in my view, the chalk cliffs of Dorset are just as spectacular. Approaching Bournemouth, the soft chalk has been eroded into spectacular towers and spires. There’s a Mediterranean feel, we’re only just covering new territory but we are already discovering new and special places.
It’s still only the middle of the day, so we keep heading east and making the most of these conditions. The easterlies that were forecast haven’t materialised. The plan is that there is no plan, let’s just keep motoring and see how far we get.

2/32 Leaving Falmouth on The Great Motorboat Tour
So we are going to head to Salcombe tonight. It’s about a three hour cruise, due east, past the Eddystone light and into Salcombe. Plan to overnight there, refuel and an early start heading to Southampton and beyond, which is a brand new cruising, ground for me. The only fly in the ointment on this beautiful day - good sunshine forecast all week - the fly in the ointment is that we are going to be heading east up channel and there are going to be some pretty strong easterlies that we are going to be heading into all the way. So it could be a bit of a bumpy ride and it could be a bit of hard work. Anyway, 3:30pm, half an hour before we leave, half an hour till the gates open, we are still not ready, we have still got an outboard bracket to fix, we have still got parts missing, we have got to go off and get stuff from the marine Chandlers. We have got to go and get a kettle, because we haven’t got a kettle and we have got to load the boat. I’m going to get ready.
The whole trip will be around 3000 miles, I’m excited, but also there is some trepidation. I guess that there are two legs of the voyage that worry me most. One is the long run across the north coast of Scotland, through the Pentland Firth which is reputed as the most dangerous stretch of sea in Britain and round the aptly named Cape Wrath. The other is the north-west coast of Ireland where for a distance of 200 miles, safe harbours and access to fuel are scarce and we will be totally exposed to whatever the Atlantic chooses to throw at us. But we both know that at sea anything can happen at any time.
