Push the door of the museum dedicated to the fabulous trip around the world of the Albigensian navigator, Lapérouse. While visiting Albi, take the Pont-Vieux which spans the Tarn to reach Botany Bay. It is from the terrace that you will enjoy one of the most beautiful panoramas on the Episcopal City: the river, the gabarres on the Tarn, the roofs of Old Alby
The Lapérouse museum , one of the seven museums of the city of Albi , is located near the Pont-Vieux , next to the Tarn . It is dedicated to the browser Lapérouse and receives nearly 12 000 visitors per year since 2010. Located in the old Albigensian mills , this place was restored in 1986, before the museum was created in 1988 by the Albi City Council and Lapérouse Albi-France (then presided over by ophthalmologist Pierre Amalric ). Simultaneously, the museum is managed by this association.
The attendance of the museum was not very important at first ( 6,500 visitors in 1993) and tending to decrease each year, a project was established by the town hall and the association to raise awareness of the museum. Thus, by setting up at least one exhibition per year, the organization of meetings, with the enrichment of the contents of the museum and the organization of visits for school children and entertainment for children on Thursday an increase in attendance was generated.
The museum mainly presents the history of the Albigensian navigator Jean-François de La Pérouse, his journey (from the beginning to the end of his journey) and the scientific expeditions carried out in Vanikoro since the sinking. Secondarily, it also evokes his family, the great expeditions of the late xviii th century , browsers that preceded the Pacific , contemporaries of his time and the towns of Albi and Brest as they were at his time.
A total of 640 exhibits are on display at the museum, including various elements of La Perouse's ships ( La Boussole and Astrolabe ), more or less voluminous, as well as other objects found on the site of the sinking and even on the Paiou camp. . With also, various models, paintings, objects that belonged to the family of La Perouse and many others. These works come from several sources including donations and loans, from individuals, other museums or directly from the Salomon association which carries out scientific research in Vanikoro and analyzes the remains. The documentary panels posted are, in turn, the property of the City Council of Albi.

The Shrine, which celebrated its 350th anniversary in 2008, is one of the oldest pilgrimage sites in North America
The Basilica of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré has been credited by the Catholic Church with many miracles of curing the sick and disabled. It is an important Catholic sanctuary which receives about a half-million pilgrims each year.
Because of the popularity of the shrine, the building was enlarged several times to accommodate all the pilgrims. In 1876, the first basilica opened for worship. The former basilica was destroyed in a fire on March 29, 1922. The present-day basilica was built on the site of the prior church in 1926.
The architecture of the Shrine of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré is inspired by the French religious architecture of the Middle Ages. It follows the roman tradition in its archways and detail, but its vast proportions and elevations lend to a more gothic style. The exterior tympanum reminds us of the great European churches. This basilica is one of the rare churches in North America that has five naves each having its own distinct vault. The elevation of the central nave includes three elements that are often seen in gothic cathedrals: large archways, a triforium and tall stained glass windows.
The Immaculate Conception Chapel, situated in the crypt of the Basilica, is consecrated to Mary, daughter of Saint Anne. The lighting and Marian colours create an atmosphere of serenity. A Carrara marble copy of Michael Angelo’s Pieta is placed in this chapel.

This place, Le Château de Sceaux, is typical of the great things you can see AROUND Paris. Most are accessible via public transportation. (This place is, by public bus.) You could skip the crowds and cost of Versailles and come here. Le Musée de l'Ile-de-France (the Greater Paris Museum) is inside, the enormous stables can be visited, the orangerie is huge and open after 4 pm, there's a casual outdoor restaurant, and the grounds are just huge. Full of lakes, fountains, woods -- and sweeping views.
The first Sunday of every month, many sites are free in France.
Versailles is actually far from Paris and the commuter train leaves you far from the famous castle. (A city bus from around St-Cloud takes you right there -- be smart and look into this if you must see Versailles.) Versailles is crowded, costly, picnics are forbidden, and you need a full day for the buildings and another full day for the grounds. I worked in Versailles (the city) briefly and did not find it to be a very welcoming place, either. You decide.
In Paris proper, the many museums run by La Ville de Paris are free of charge (if there is a temporary exhibition, you might have to pay to see that, but you can still see the permanent collections for free). Le Musée Carnavalet and Le Musée Cognack-Jay in Le Marais come to mind. Try to spend a long visit here, and remember, there's a lot more to France than just Paris! And don't forget Belgium, a complex and often-overlooked destination!
