Lake Garda Italy Highlights and Attractions (Lago Di Garda)
Edited video and still images from my vacation in Malcesine, Lake Garda in August 2013, staying at the wonderful Hotel Vega.
I'd highly recommend Malcesine as a lovely picturesque town to stay in, relax and explore. It has bags of character and plenty to do, but is also a useful base, at the more Northern end of the Lake, so access to Limone, Torbole and Riva is easy using the passenger ferry.
Food is excellent wherever you go in Italy.
The day trip to Venice was a must, however due to the searing heat and endless streams of tourists (I know I was part of the problem!) it was difficult to enjoy at the time, but now looking back at my footage of the Gondola ride I'm quite enjoying it more now in retrospect.
The day trip to Bolzano and Renon was really pleasant; a 2 hour easy coach ride to Bolzano, a pretty town with attractive, colourful buildings and great cable car ride into the mountains where we completed the rest of the climb by tram. Renon gave us great views across the mountains (I think The Dolomites were visible in the background), and some very interesting 'earth pyramids'.
The tandem paragliding was great and not half as scary as I'd imagined. To see more, watch the full video
A great vacation - I can completely see why people return to the lake year after year.

Things To Do In Lake Garda, Trentino, Italy
Garda Trentino isn’t necessarily the first place you think of visiting in Italy! Rome, Florence and Milan might get to top billing for many-a-traveller but Lake Garda, especially the area around the Trentino region of Italy - Garda Trentino, is without a doubt one of the best places to visit in Italy!
For starters, Trentino as a whole looks and feels like nowhere else you’ll visit in Italy! (See full blog post here - HandLuggageOnly.co.uk/Trentino) It’s just such an amazing part of Italy! Then there’s all the food and fun to be had here (and I’m just gonna guess here and say you probably don’t need much convincing when it comes to Italian food)!
Long story short, if you’re planning on heading to Lake Garda - here’s what to get up to and a few places you definitely have to visit!

Lazise, Lake Garda - Italy: Things to Do and Tourist Information
If you are planning to visit Lazise and Lake Garda, in Italy, here you’ll find the best tips on things to do in the city, with a sightseeing map on the most relevant points of interest to enjoy, so you can easily imagine and organize your trip: WHAT to see, HOW to plan your visit, and WHY to discover this place.
In this video:
- WHAT are the major attractions that you can't go home without having seen: Church of Saint Nicolò church, San Zeno Gate, San Nicolò Church, Scaligero castle.
- Then, I’ll describe to you HOW to follow a daily-tour to better visit the city, with a clear map of Lazise and tips for nearby attractions.
- Finally, we’ll discover WHY to visit Lazise, with his rich historic city center.
WHAT
Lazise, located on the eastern shore of Garda Lake, between Bardolino and Peschiera del Garda.
Its name derives from the Latin “lacus” which means lacustrine village. Lazise in fact was originally a group of stilt houses.
What to see in Lazise?
The medieval Church of Saint Nicolò has frescoes dating from the 12th century, by the school of Giotto.
In 1405, Lazise came under Venetian Republic rule, but the castle and the city walls were built before, by the Scaligeri of Verona.
After the Congress of Vienna (1815) it entered a period of Austrian rule, until in 1866, it was incorporated into the Kingdom of Italy.
The 14th century La Pergolana villa, a kilometer north of Lazise, hosts a famous honey festival during the first weekend of October.
HOW
How could you visit Lazise?
I suggest you park just under the northern part of the walls. From here you can enter the narrow city’s streets, until San Zeno Gate, to move in Vittorio Emanuele square and then to San Nicolò Church. Finally, visit the Scaligero castle.
But then, I suggest to you:
- don’t miss the chance to walk north along the lake, to arrive in Cisano village and Bardolino city
- going south you could visit, by car, Peschiera del Garda or the crazy Gardaland park.
- in 25 mìnutes by car you can reach Sirmione and its thermal baths.
Finally, in half an hour by car you could arrive in Verona, the city of Romeo and Juliet
Don’t forget to watch my videos on Bardolino, Sirmione, Peschiera and Verona!
WHY
The city is a popular holiday destination in Southern Europe, thanks to its beautiful view of the Alps from the Garda Lake.
I love its Medieval walls and the way this city has a series of interconnected squares that house several open-air cafés, shops, gelaterie, where you can smoothly walk or take a break. I think Lazise is a relaxing place compared to other towns on the lake.

LAKE GARDA - LAZISE
STILL WANDERING AROUND LAKE GARDA TODAY I BRING YOU TO DISCOVER LAZISE, THE OLDEST FREE TOWN IN ITALY, WITH THE MOST BEAUTIFUL LAKESIDE PROMENADE, THE BEST PRESERVED CASTLE ON LAKE GARDA, AND THE GREATEST NUMBER OF TOURIST INCOME.
HISTORICALLY LAZISE HAS ALWAYS BEEN AN IMPORTANT TOWN: DURING THE ROMAN ERA IT WAS A CRUCIAL STOP-OVER FOR THE GOODS COMING FROM NORTH. LAZISE WAS THE FIRST FREE MUNICIPALITY IN ITALY, IT WAS THE POINT OF CONTENTION BETWEEN THE FRENCH AND AUSTRIAN ARMY, AND EVENTUALLY IT BECAME PART OF THE KINGDOM OF ITALY. IN CONCLUSION: WHEN IN LAZISE YOU FELL DRENCHED WITHIN A SPECIAL ATMOSPHERE THAT NOWADAYS YOU CAN STILL LIVE IN THIS LIVELY TOWN!
SEVERAL POPULAR AND HISTORICAL FIGURES VISITED LAZISE: CATULLO, GOETHE, GUSTAV KLIMT, BUT THE MASS TOURISM IN LAZISE BEGAN AFTER THE SECOND WORLD WAR, WHEN TOURISTS, ESPECIALLY FROM GERMANY, BEGAN TO CHOOSE A CLOSER AND CHEAPER DESTINATION FOR THEIR HOLIDAYS ON LAKE GARDA. TODAY LAZISE COUNTS WITH MORE THAN TWO AND A HALF MILLION TOURISTS PER YEAR. IN JUST FEW MILES THERE ARE MORE THAN 40 HOTELS AND 10 CAMPSITES, PLUS LANDLORDS, BED AND BREAKFASTS AND OTHER ACCOMMODATIONS.
THE LAKISIDE OF LAZISE IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL YOU CAN FIND ON LAKE GARDA! PIAZZA VITTORIO EMANUELE AND THE SMALL PORT ARE OTHER EVOCATIVE SPOTS, ENLIVEN BY THE FISHERMEN’S BOATS AND THE TOURISTS!
EVERY WEDNESDAY HUNDREADS OF PEOPLE WANDER THROUGH THE COLORS AND PERFUMES OF THE OPEN-AIR MARKET SCATTERED ALONG THE LAKEFRONT AND THE OLD TOWN OF LAZISE.
THE CASTLE OF LAZISE IS ONE OF THE BEST PRESERVED OF LAKE GARDA. ITS WALLS STILL ENCLOSE THE OLD TOWN, NOWADAYS FULL OF SHOPS, RESTAURANTS AND BARS.
THE VENETIAN DOGANA WAS THE ANCIENT CUSTOMS, BUILT DURING THE FOURTEENTH CENTURY. AT THE BEGINNING IT WAS CRUCIAL FOR THE GOODS COMING AND LEAVING FROM THE PORT OF LAZISE, THEN IT TURNED INTO AN ARSENAL, THEN A WAREHOUSE, AND FINALLY IT WAS THE CASA DEL FASCIO, THAT IS THE SEAT OF THE LOCAL BRANCH OF THE NATIONAL FASCIST PARTY. TODAY IT HOSTS MEETINGS, CONFERENCES, AND WEDDINGS. THIS IS ALSO THE PLACE WHERE THE VENETIAN FLEET WAS MOORED DURING THE SERENISSIMA REPUBLIC. AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SIXTEENTH CENTURY THE FRENCH ARMY DEFEATED THE VENETIAN FLEET; THE CAPTAIN ZACCARIA LOREDAN WANTED TO BRING THE SHIPS HERE TO KEEP THEM SAFE, BUT HE WAS GIVEN THE ORDER TO SINK THEM, TO PREVENT THEM FROM BECOMING FRENCH PROPERTY. THE CAPTAIN OBEYED, AND TODAY, MORE THAN 500 YEARS LATER, THE WRECKS OF THOSE SHIPS ARE STILL HERE, ON THE LAKE BOTTOM, SO IF YOU LOVE SCUBA DIVING THIS IS THE PLACE FOR YOU!
BUT NOT ONLY SCUBA DIVING, LAZISE IS THE PERFECT PLACE FOR ANY KIND OF WATER SPORTS!
BEACHES OF LAZISE
LIDO LA MARRA: THIS IS THE PUBLIC BEACH OF LAZISE; IT’S REALLY CLOSE TO THE CENTER, JUST FEW MINUTES WALKING FROM THE OLD TOWN.
PACENGO BEACH: IT’S 3 MILES SOUTH LAZISE, FEW STEPS FROM THE SMALL PORT OF PACENGO. IT’S A SMALL AND QUIET BEACH, BECAUSE IT’S FURTHER FROM THE CITY.
PRIVATE BEACHES
IF YOU GO SOUTHWARDS YOU FIND TWO VERY BEAUTIFUL SANDY BEACHES: THE OAK BEACH AND THE GOLDEN BEACH, IN ITALIAN “LA QUERCIA” AND “LA SPIAGGIA D’ORO”. THESE ARE PRIVATE BEACHES, THEY BELONG TO THEIR RESPECTIVE CAMPSITES. THEY ARE VERY BEAUTIFUL AND EQUIPPED WITH ANY KIND OF FACILITIES, THAT IS SUNBEDS, BEACH UMBRELLAS, BARS, RESTAURANTS AND EACH CAMPSITE HAS ALSO A WATER PARK.
VILLA DEI CEDRI
THE GARDA THERMAL BATHS OF “VILLA DEI CEDRI IS A WELLNESS CENTER SITUATED IN COLA’ DI LAZISE, A DISCTRICT OF LAZISE. 13 HECTARES BIG, SURROUNDED BY ANCIENT TREES, WHERE THERE ARE LAKES, POOLS, GEYSERS, WHIRLPOOLS, FOUNTAINS AND WATERFALLS, WORKING WITH HOT ANTI-INFLAMMATORY THERMAL WATER, WHICH POURS FROM TWO DIFFERENT SPRINGS AT 37° AND 42° CELSUIS DEGREES, WHOSE THERAPEUTIC PROPERTIES HAVE BEEN RECOGNIZED BY THE MINISTRY OF HEALTH.
IN THE MAIN LAKE THE TEMPERATURE OF THE WATER IS ABOUT 33 C ° WITH WHIRLPOOLS THAT REACH 37-39 ° C.
VILLA DEI CEDRI OFFERS ITS VISITORS FINNISH SAUNAS, BIO-SAUNAS, TURKISH BATHS, AROMATHERAPY, CHILL OUT AREAS, AS WELL AS MASSAGE THERAPIES, REHABILITATION THERAPIES, A GYM, BARS AND RESTAURANTS.
AND, FOR THE HAPPINESS OF THE GUESTS, A LUXURY HOTEL HAS BEEN BUILT OUT OF A NEOCLASSICAL VILLA OF THE LATE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY
