LAKE GARDA - TORRI DEL BENACO
CASTLE OF TORRI DEL BENACO
AFTER YEARS OF ABANDON IN WINTER OF 1980 A GROUP OF VOLUNTEERS DECIDED TO GIVE NEW LIFE TO THE CASTLE OF TORRI DEL BENACO AND, IN 1983, AFTER RENOVATION WORKS THE MUSEUM OF THE CASTLE WAS INAUGURATED. IN ITS ROOMS ARE PRESERVED THE ASPECTS OF CULTURE AND THE DAILY LIFE OF THE INHABITANTS OF TORRI DEL BENACO: THERE IS A SECTION DEDICATED TO AGRICULTURE, WITH A TORCH FOR OLIVES RECONSTRUCTED USING ORIGINAL STONE PIECES; THERE IS ALSO AN IMPORTANT SECTION DEDICATED TO FISHING. BUT THE MAIN ATTRACTION IS THE 350 YEARS OLD GREENHOUSE OF CITRUS TREES, WHERE PLANTS CAN GROWP UP TO 25 FEET IN HEIGHT, AND EACH PLANT CAN PRODUCE UP TO 3.000 LEMONS EVERY YEAR!
SOMEONE SAY THE CASTLE OF TORRI DEL BENACO WAS BUILT BY THE ROMANS AND THE WESTERN TOWER WOULD PROVE IT, BECAUSE IT IS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FROM THE OTHER, RIGHT BECAUSE IT WAS BUILT IN A DIFFERENT PERIOD. ACCORDING TO OTHERS, INSTEAD, THE TOWER WAS BUILT IN THE TENTH CENTURY BY THE KING BERENGARIO THE FIRST, WHO HAD THE CASTLE COMPLETELY REBUILT AND HAD THE TOWER AND THE WALLS BUILT TO SHELTER THIS PART OF LAKE GARDA FROM THE HUNGARIAN INVASIONS. WHAT IS CERTAIN IS THAT CENTURIES LATER THE VISCONTI FAMILY FROM MILAN TOOK ONLY 6 DAYS TO DESTROY IT!
OLD TOWN OF TORRI DEL BENACO
THE PORT OF TORRI DEL BENACO IS ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL ON LAKE GARDA, SHELL-SHAPED, WHOSE ORIGINAL STRUCTURE DATES BACK TO THE ROMAN AGE. THE FIFTEENTH CENTURY GARDESANA BUILDING OVERLOOKS THE HARBOR, AND HAS HAD DIFFERENT FUNCTIONS ACROSS THE CENTURIES: THE WAREHOUSE OF THE PORT, HEADQUARTERS OF THE COUNCIL AT THE TIME OF THE REPUBLIC OF VENICE, WHILE TODAY IT HAS BECOME A FIRST-CLASS HOTEL AND RESTAURANT.
THE LOOK ON THE LAKESIDE OF TORRI DEL BENACO SEEN FROM ITS PORT IS WONDERFUL, WHILE THE INLAND QUIET STREETS AND SQUARES ARE A SEQUENCE OF BEAUTIFUL GLIMPSES AND CHARACTERISTIC SPOTS. TAKE YOUR TIME TO WALK BY THE TOWER OF THE TOWN HALL, WITH ITS WATCH THAT IS ONE OF THE MOST ANCIENT OF THE WHOLE REGION.
IF THEN YOU WANT TO EAT OR DRINK SOMETHING FRESH YOU JUST NEED TO GET BACK TO THE LAKE PROMENADE AND GO IN ONE OF THE MANY BARS AND RESTAURANTS YOU WILL FIND.
BEACHES OF TORRI DEL BENACO
BAIA STANCA AND BAIA DEI PINI: THESE ARE THE MAIN BEACHES IN TORRI DEL BENACO, BOTH PLACED NORTH OF THE OLD TOWN. THESE BEACHES ARE REALLY POPULAR BECAUSE THE ACCESS IS FREE AND THE WATER VERY CLEAR AND NOT DEEP, SO KIDS CAN PLAY SAFELY.
SCUBA DIVING IN TORRI DEL BENACO
THIS IS ALSO THE RIGHT PLACE FOR YOU IF YOU LIKE SCUBA DIVING. AT A DEPTH OF 82 FEET LIES AN UNDERWATER NATIVITY SCENE, PLACED THERE IN 1991, WHILE AT 130 FEET UNDER LAKE LEVEL THERE IS A SECOND ONE, AT THE END OF A CLIFF. WITH LOTS OF DIVING SCHOOLS THIS IS THE PLACE FOR YOU!
THE TANELLA CAVE
IF YOU PREFER TREKKING IN THE WOODS YOU CAN GO TO THE HAMLET OF PAI DI SOPRA, A DISCTRICT OF TORRI DEL BENACO, WHERE YOU CAN EXPLORE THE TANELLA CAVE, AND ENJOY BEAUTIFUL STALACTITES AND STALAGMITES WITH A GUIDED TOUR.
THE GARDEN OF CASA BIASI
IN PESINA DI CAPRINO VERONESE YOU CAN FIND THE GARDEN OF CASA BIASI. THE GARDEN WAS BORN IN 1977 THANKS TO AN IDEA OF MARIO AND LUCIANA BIASI, WHO CREATED THIS GREAT GARDEN OUT OF SCARCE FERTILE VINEYARDS. THEY GAVE FREE VENT TO THEIR FANTASY AND PASSION FOR BOTANICS. TODAY NICO, THE SON OF MARIO AND LUCIANA, TOGETHER WITH HIS WIFE CECILIA PUT THE SAME PASSION IN TAKING CARE OF THIS GARDEN. THEY HAVE BEEN WORKING FOR TWENTY YEARS TO MAINTAIN AND EXPAND THIS FASCINATING CREATION! THE ROMANTIC PARK, THE MEDITERRANEAN GARDEN, THE LINDEN AVENUE, CEDAR TREES, SYCAMORE TREES, CAMELLIAS, CYCLAMENS, HORTENSIAS, OLIVE TREES, LEMON AND ORANGE TREES AND MUCH MORE WILL ASTONISH YOU! IF YOU LIKE FLOWERS AND PLANTS DO NOT MISS THIS 4 ACRES JEWEL!
DRIVE LAKE GARDA
We start driving from Riva del Garda on the east side of the lake. The drive takes you through some really beautiful towns and villages: Torbole, Malcesine, Pai, Torri del Benaco a.s.o. I wish that we had time to stop and visit some places or just stop every 2 km to take pictures.
The drive takes around 1h 15 min., if you drive toward Verona, from Bardolino another 30 min.

Garda Village - Italy: Things to Do - What, How and Why to visit it
If you are planning to visit Garda village and Lake Garda, in Italy, here you’ll find the best tips on things to do in the city, with a sightseeing map on the most relevant points of interest to enjoy, so you can easily imagine and organize your trip: WHAT to see, HOW to plan your visit, and WHY to discover Garda city.
In this video:
- WHAT are the major attractions that you can't go home without having seen, including the old Garda town, Villa degli Albertini, Garda Fortress and Punta San Vigilio.
- Then, I’ll describe to you HOW to follow a daily-tour to better visit the city, with a clear map of Garda village and tips for nearby attractions.
Finally, we’ll discover WHY to visit Garda city, with his rich historic city center.
WHAT
Garda village, on the eastern shore of Garda Lake, is located between Bardolino and Torri del Benaco.
What can you do in Garda city?
Surely you can take a walk along the alleys of the center.
Here you can also find a lot of interesting shops.
And if that's not enough, you can have fun visiting the lakeside market on Friday.
Just outside the center, I suggest you give a look at Villa degli Albertini (16th century), with its lovely magnolia trees.
HOW
How could you visit Garda town?
If you still have energy after visiting the old town, here are three possible trips you could follow:
- trekking up to the remains of Garda fortress, standing 300 m over the town, which offers an amazing view over the whole lake.
- a walking towards Punta San Vigilio, a village within a small park.
- another option you have is to visit Bardolino, going south (watch my video on it).
WHY
Why visit Garda village?
Garda is not only a fascinating village, but divides the eastern shore of the lake into two, and therefore can be a convenient starting point for visiting all the attractions on this side of the lake. In addition, Garda city allows long walks along the lake, going north or south ... a real relax!

LAKE GARDA - PESCHIERA DEL GARDA
PESCHIERA DEL GARDA RISES RIGHT WHERE LAKE GARDA TIGHTENS AND BECOMES A RIVER, AND FLOWS TOWARDS THE CITY OF MANTUA AND THE RIVER PO. A BEAUTIFUL BIKE PATH STARTS HERE AND FOLLOWS THE FLOW OF THE RIVER MINCIO FOR OVER 25 MILES, CONNECTING THIS CITY TO MANTUA.
ONE OF THE MOST SUGGESTIVE AREAS OF PESCHIERA DEL GARDA IS THE ONE CLOSE TO THE PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE THAT CROSSES THE EXTERNAL CANAL OF THE ANCIENT FORTRESS AT THE HEIGHT OF PORTA BRESCIA, THE ANCIENT WESTERN GATEWAY TO THE FORTRESS.
PESCHIERA DEL GARDA, TOGETHER WITH MANTUA, VERONA AND LEGNAGO IS PART OF A HUGE DEFENSIVE STRUCTURE BUILT BY THE AUSTRIANS.
THE CITY RISES ON AN ISLAND THAT OVER THE YEARS HAS BEEN EQUIPPED WITH DEFENSIVE WALLS AND BASTIONS TO ENSURE ITS SAFETY. AN ANCIENT PATROL WALKWAY THAT JOINS THE BASTIONS IS STILL ACCESSIBLE: DON'T MISS IT! BECAUSE WALKING ALONG IT WILL PLEDGE YOU A BEAUTIFUL VIEW OVER THE CITY AND YOU WILL APPRECIATE GLIMPSES THAT OTHERWISE YOU WOULD MISS.
AS YOU ENTER THE OLD TOWN AND FOLLOW THE DEFENSIVE WALLS, RIGHT BEYOND THE TOGNON BASTION YOU REACH THE HARBOR WHERE BOAT TRIPS LEAVE TO DISCOVER PESCHIERA DEL GARDA AND THE MAIN TOWNS ON THE LAKE. CONTINUING, YOU WILL FIND AN HISTORICAL BUILDING KNOWN AS THE “PALAZZINA DI COMANDO”.
IN THIS VERY BUILDING RIGHT AFTER THE DEFEAT OF CAPORETTO THE GLORIOUS RESISTANCE ON THE PIAVE RIVER WAS PLANNED; INSIDE, THE HALL WHERE ON NOVEMBER 8TH 1917 THE KING VITTORIO EMANUELE III AND THE ALLIES GATHERED FOR THE HISTORIC CONFERENCE IN PESCHIERA DEL GARDA. THAT ROOM HAS BEEN UNTOUCHED FOR OVER 100 YEARS!
THE TOUR OF THE DEFENSIVE WALLS LEADS TO THE VOLTONI BRIDGE, WITH BEAUTIFUL COTTO TILES ARCHES, OVERLOOKING THE CENTRAL CANAL WHERE THE FISHERMEN'S BOATS OF PESCHIERA DEL GARDA STAND ORDERLY. ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE BRIDGE YOU CAN ALSO ADMIRE THE ISLET WITH ITS LUXURIANT VEGETATION, BEYOND WHICH THE WATERS OF LAKE GARDA POUR INTO THE RIVER MINCIO.
THANKS TO THE HISTORICAL RELEVANCE, THE SUNNY BEACHES, THE MOST POPULAR AMUSEMENT PARKS IN ITALY, TODAY PESCHIERA DEL GARDA IS A FIRST-RATE TOURIST CENTRE: HOTELS, CAMPSITES, HOLIDAY HOMES ARE LITERALLY RUSHED BY MORE THAN 800,000 TOURISTS EVERY YEAR. YOU KNOW, DURING THE SUMMER PESCHIERA DEL GARDA DOUBLE ITS POPULATION!
MANY EVENTS ARE ORGANIZED OVER THE YEAR:
• FESTIVAL OF STREET ARTISTS
• SAILING REGATTAS
• EXCURSIONS TO DISCOVER THE WINERIES IN THE SURROUNDINGS
• A TOWN FESTIVAL WITH THE VENETIAN STYLE RACE AROUND THE FORTRESS WALLS;
• FIREWORKS FROM THE VOLTONI BRIDGE;
• CAR RALLIES
AND SO ON
AND IN SUCH A PLACE OF COURSE YOU HAVE A LOTS OF RESTAURANTS, SHOPS, BARS, PUBS ... THE OLD TOWN OF PESCHIERA DEL GARDA IS FILLED WITH! AND ITS STREETS ARE UNLIVEN 24 HOURS A DAY BY TOURISTS AND LOCALS!
AMUSEMENT PARKS
IF YOU PLAN TO STAY IN PESCHIERA DEL GARDA FOR MORE DAYS I SUGGEST YOU TO SPEND SOME TIME IN ONE OF THE MANY AMUSEMENT PARKS THAT HAVE HELPED MAKING THIS TOWN POPULAR. THERE ARE MANY, BUT THE MOST FAMOUS ARE:
GARDALAND, WHICH OFFERS MANY ATTRACTIONS, RIDES, ROLLER COASTERS, SHOWS AND ALSO MANY RESTAURANTS AND EVEN TWO HOTELS.
CANEVAWORLD: THERE YOU HAVE A WATER PARK WITH MANY POOLS, ATTRACTIONS, SLIDES AND CHILL OUT AREAS, PLUS AN AMUSEMENT PARK CALLED “MOVIELAND”, DEDICATED TO MOVIES WITH STUNTMEN AND ACTORS WHO WILL SET-UP ENTERTAINING SHOWS TO MAKE YOU LIVE THE MAGIC OF HOLLYWOOD.
BEACHES
CAPPUCCINI BEACH: HALF A MILE FROM THE CENTER OF PESCHIERA, YOU REACH THE CAPPUCCINI BEACH, YOU FIND IT AFTER THE HARBOR, AT THE END OF LUNGOLAGO MAZZINI. THE ACCESS TO THE BEACH IS FREE, YOU CAN RENT SUNBEDS, DECKCHAIRS, THERE IS A RESTAURANT, AND CHILDREN CAN ALSO HAVE FUN IN THE PLAYGROUND WITH SLIDES, SWINGS AND TRAMPOLINES.
BRACCOBALDO BEACH: ANOTHER HALF A MILE TOWARDS SIRMIONE YOU CAN FIND THE BRACCOBALDO BEACH, ALSO EQUIPPED WITH ALL THE FACILITIES YOU MIGHT NEED, AND IT IS ALSO ONE OF THE FIRST BEACHES IN ITALY WHERE IS ALLOWED TO BRING YOUR DOG.
LIDO AI PIOPPI: FULLY EQUIPPED BEACH, YOU FIND IT ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE OLD TOWN OF PESCHIERA DEL GARDA, TOWARDS CASTELNUOVO DEL GARDA.

Lost in Lago

LAKE GARDA - LAZISE
STILL WANDERING AROUND LAKE GARDA TODAY I BRING YOU TO DISCOVER LAZISE, THE OLDEST FREE TOWN IN ITALY, WITH THE MOST BEAUTIFUL LAKESIDE PROMENADE, THE BEST PRESERVED CASTLE ON LAKE GARDA, AND THE GREATEST NUMBER OF TOURIST INCOME.
HISTORICALLY LAZISE HAS ALWAYS BEEN AN IMPORTANT TOWN: DURING THE ROMAN ERA IT WAS A CRUCIAL STOP-OVER FOR THE GOODS COMING FROM NORTH. LAZISE WAS THE FIRST FREE MUNICIPALITY IN ITALY, IT WAS THE POINT OF CONTENTION BETWEEN THE FRENCH AND AUSTRIAN ARMY, AND EVENTUALLY IT BECAME PART OF THE KINGDOM OF ITALY. IN CONCLUSION: WHEN IN LAZISE YOU FELL DRENCHED WITHIN A SPECIAL ATMOSPHERE THAT NOWADAYS YOU CAN STILL LIVE IN THIS LIVELY TOWN!
SEVERAL POPULAR AND HISTORICAL FIGURES VISITED LAZISE: CATULLO, GOETHE, GUSTAV KLIMT, BUT THE MASS TOURISM IN LAZISE BEGAN AFTER THE SECOND WORLD WAR, WHEN TOURISTS, ESPECIALLY FROM GERMANY, BEGAN TO CHOOSE A CLOSER AND CHEAPER DESTINATION FOR THEIR HOLIDAYS ON LAKE GARDA. TODAY LAZISE COUNTS WITH MORE THAN TWO AND A HALF MILLION TOURISTS PER YEAR. IN JUST FEW MILES THERE ARE MORE THAN 40 HOTELS AND 10 CAMPSITES, PLUS LANDLORDS, BED AND BREAKFASTS AND OTHER ACCOMMODATIONS.
THE LAKISIDE OF LAZISE IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL YOU CAN FIND ON LAKE GARDA! PIAZZA VITTORIO EMANUELE AND THE SMALL PORT ARE OTHER EVOCATIVE SPOTS, ENLIVEN BY THE FISHERMEN’S BOATS AND THE TOURISTS!
EVERY WEDNESDAY HUNDREADS OF PEOPLE WANDER THROUGH THE COLORS AND PERFUMES OF THE OPEN-AIR MARKET SCATTERED ALONG THE LAKEFRONT AND THE OLD TOWN OF LAZISE.
THE CASTLE OF LAZISE IS ONE OF THE BEST PRESERVED OF LAKE GARDA. ITS WALLS STILL ENCLOSE THE OLD TOWN, NOWADAYS FULL OF SHOPS, RESTAURANTS AND BARS.
THE VENETIAN DOGANA WAS THE ANCIENT CUSTOMS, BUILT DURING THE FOURTEENTH CENTURY. AT THE BEGINNING IT WAS CRUCIAL FOR THE GOODS COMING AND LEAVING FROM THE PORT OF LAZISE, THEN IT TURNED INTO AN ARSENAL, THEN A WAREHOUSE, AND FINALLY IT WAS THE CASA DEL FASCIO, THAT IS THE SEAT OF THE LOCAL BRANCH OF THE NATIONAL FASCIST PARTY. TODAY IT HOSTS MEETINGS, CONFERENCES, AND WEDDINGS. THIS IS ALSO THE PLACE WHERE THE VENETIAN FLEET WAS MOORED DURING THE SERENISSIMA REPUBLIC. AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SIXTEENTH CENTURY THE FRENCH ARMY DEFEATED THE VENETIAN FLEET; THE CAPTAIN ZACCARIA LOREDAN WANTED TO BRING THE SHIPS HERE TO KEEP THEM SAFE, BUT HE WAS GIVEN THE ORDER TO SINK THEM, TO PREVENT THEM FROM BECOMING FRENCH PROPERTY. THE CAPTAIN OBEYED, AND TODAY, MORE THAN 500 YEARS LATER, THE WRECKS OF THOSE SHIPS ARE STILL HERE, ON THE LAKE BOTTOM, SO IF YOU LOVE SCUBA DIVING THIS IS THE PLACE FOR YOU!
BUT NOT ONLY SCUBA DIVING, LAZISE IS THE PERFECT PLACE FOR ANY KIND OF WATER SPORTS!
BEACHES OF LAZISE
LIDO LA MARRA: THIS IS THE PUBLIC BEACH OF LAZISE; IT’S REALLY CLOSE TO THE CENTER, JUST FEW MINUTES WALKING FROM THE OLD TOWN.
PACENGO BEACH: IT’S 3 MILES SOUTH LAZISE, FEW STEPS FROM THE SMALL PORT OF PACENGO. IT’S A SMALL AND QUIET BEACH, BECAUSE IT’S FURTHER FROM THE CITY.
PRIVATE BEACHES
IF YOU GO SOUTHWARDS YOU FIND TWO VERY BEAUTIFUL SANDY BEACHES: THE OAK BEACH AND THE GOLDEN BEACH, IN ITALIAN “LA QUERCIA” AND “LA SPIAGGIA D’ORO”. THESE ARE PRIVATE BEACHES, THEY BELONG TO THEIR RESPECTIVE CAMPSITES. THEY ARE VERY BEAUTIFUL AND EQUIPPED WITH ANY KIND OF FACILITIES, THAT IS SUNBEDS, BEACH UMBRELLAS, BARS, RESTAURANTS AND EACH CAMPSITE HAS ALSO A WATER PARK.
VILLA DEI CEDRI
THE GARDA THERMAL BATHS OF “VILLA DEI CEDRI IS A WELLNESS CENTER SITUATED IN COLA’ DI LAZISE, A DISCTRICT OF LAZISE. 13 HECTARES BIG, SURROUNDED BY ANCIENT TREES, WHERE THERE ARE LAKES, POOLS, GEYSERS, WHIRLPOOLS, FOUNTAINS AND WATERFALLS, WORKING WITH HOT ANTI-INFLAMMATORY THERMAL WATER, WHICH POURS FROM TWO DIFFERENT SPRINGS AT 37° AND 42° CELSUIS DEGREES, WHOSE THERAPEUTIC PROPERTIES HAVE BEEN RECOGNIZED BY THE MINISTRY OF HEALTH.
IN THE MAIN LAKE THE TEMPERATURE OF THE WATER IS ABOUT 33 C ° WITH WHIRLPOOLS THAT REACH 37-39 ° C.
VILLA DEI CEDRI OFFERS ITS VISITORS FINNISH SAUNAS, BIO-SAUNAS, TURKISH BATHS, AROMATHERAPY, CHILL OUT AREAS, AS WELL AS MASSAGE THERAPIES, REHABILITATION THERAPIES, A GYM, BARS AND RESTAURANTS.
AND, FOR THE HAPPINESS OF THE GUESTS, A LUXURY HOTEL HAS BEEN BUILT OUT OF A NEOCLASSICAL VILLA OF THE LATE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
