Linfen: The other side of town...
After watching documentaries and reading news about the toxic levels of pollution city of Linfen (in China's Shanxi province), Nico and I decided to check the place out. What we found was a pleasant surprise! We must admit, the air wasn't crisp and clean, especially on the first day of our visit. But many other cities (i.e. Beijing) suffer from much more polluted skies. More importantly, Linfen is home to some of the most welcoming people we've ever seen! It has a nice city center, with hundreds and hundreds of shops, some cool temples, and a main square on which people from all ages gather both during day and night to dance, sing and play games. Few, if any, tourists visit Linfen because of it's bad reputation. We want to show you the 'other side of town'; the Linfen in which people live, laugh and love. Enjoy the side of a city few people see.
Welcome to Linfen, welcome to the real China!
The Scariest Places of Google Earth
Get more Tips here!
Is it your dream to travel to the four corners of the globe, but just don't have the cash? Don't worry! Just download Google Earth! You can visit the whole world right from your couch. However, be warned, there are some scary places out there!
1) Pripyat Village, Ukraine
This village suffered the most cruel and saddest ending. It's heartbreaking to see pictures of this lonely and abandoned ghost town. But if we glide in from above in Google Earth it's almost even more breathtaking. This area will never be the same.
2) Linfen city, China
This is known as the most polluted city in the world. It's a fully industrialized city without environmental controls where people die very young from cancer and other fatal illnesses. The smog is so dense it obscures most of the images on Google Earth.
3) The Devil's Face, Atlanta
In one of the most religious places in the U.S.A. suddenly, one day a malicious face could be perceived in the surrounding area. Could it just have been a coincidence? Probably. But, in any case, it was really scary and suspicious. People in the area modified the terrain to, literally, erase it from the face of the Earth.
4) The Cave of Antarctica, Antarctica
This is a huge cave that nobody has been able to explore yet. The thing is that its entrance is so strange that rumors say it was built by aliens to hide their ships. And there's also another one that is suspected to be a German army base built back in the 1940's where they performed secret experiments.
5) The Blood Lake, Iran
One morning this normal lake was suddenly completely blood red. Some thought that it was maybe due to high pollution levels and sediment resting in the lake. However the surrounding lakes were clear, so it didn't add up. The other terrifying conclusion is that the surrounding slaughterhouses began dumping their waste into it creating this huge lake of blood.
6) Censored Places
The world is full of nuclear power plants, some of them outside of city limits. However, we can't see them on Google Earth because they are completely censored. Who knows what other secrets our governments are keeping from us?
7) Chittagong Port, Bangladesh
Also known as Hell on Earth. (Monkey of Doom) This is the most polluted place on Earth. It's a ship graveyard where vessels from all around the world are brought to be dismantled. However, it's so polluted that the sea is full of fuel and oil, the air is toxic, and people live inside the old ships, with a very low life expectancy. It's like something out of an apocalyptic movie.
Know of any other scary places?

Flying the Made in China Jet - ARJ21-700!
A special flight on the Chinese made ARJ21-700 on Chengdu Airlines from Chengdu to Linfen and back. Check out the interior of the Chinese made ARJ21. Watch the takeoff and landing performance of ARJ21. Enjoy commentary from the crew and myself about the ARJ21.
Join me for an incredible sight-seeing trip to Hukou waterfall in China, which flows quickly and forcefully into the Yellow river. I take an internal flight within China from Chengdu Shuangliu international airport, which is the major international airport that serves Chengdu, the capital of the Chinese province Sichuan, to Linfen Qiaoli airport in Shanxi aboard the first ever aeroplane made in China, the ARJ21.
I use Chengdu airlines but there are another two airlines which make use of the ARJ21 aeroplane – Urumqi Air and the Mongolian Genghis Khan airlines.
The placing of the engine right at the rear of the aeroplane makes our seat at the back very noisy and one of the major disadvantages of flying on the ARJ21 is the general noisiness and din overall; even sitting at the front, it’s hard to ignore the sound of the heavily labouring engine! It’s also frustrating that the ARJ21-700 has to fly so low as this makes the aeroplane vulnerable to the weather. As I hear in my interview with the captain, the ARJ21 is not able to fly in heavy rain!
This aeroplane is not certified by either the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) or the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), however, the larger, more able C919 jet is beginning to gain popularity in China, as the captain tells me, and this can only be a good thing, since the C919 is able to carry many more passengers (the ARJ21 is limited to only 90 passengers, which is a problem in a country with more than a billion people in it!) and also more cargo.
The ARJ21 jet was commissioned by the Chinese government in 2002 and the first aeroplane entered service in 2015 with Chengdu airlines. It is a twin engine, regional get which is made by the Chinese company Comac. ARJ itself stands for: Advanced Regional Jet.
After being given the emergency information (I am seated with extra leg room in a seat by the emergency door, but the price I have to pay is that I get extra safety tuition and am in charge of opening the emergency door for other passengers – I’d best pay attention!), I’m up in the air. The food could be better – I initially go for the congee but it’s so bland that I switch to the chicken noodles. There is an unexpected bonus though – a free breakfast with yummy red bean paste bread, a Chinese delicacy.
The sight of Hukou waterfall itself is astonishing – keep watching to the end to see it in all its glory. I feel that I had a very enjoyable day out and, as a further bonus, I was able to enjoy a number of the hi-tech comforts at Linfen airport before taking my flight home, including automatic massage seats and even a karaoke booth!
Who knew that China could be so scenic? Let me know what you thought of the whole trip on the ARJ21 aeroplane in the comments section down below and, as always, thanks for watching!

The Longest Way 1.0 - walk through China and grow a beard! - a photo every day timelapse
GET MERCH:
In 2008, I walked through China - 1 year, 4500km. I let my hair and my beard grow. This is the resulting video. UPDATE: ▶ I have decided to continue my walk home from China to Germany. I'm currently in Georgia, or about halfway through.I post daily videos on this channel, and I blog about it here:
ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
▶ I didn't finish my original goal of walking to Germany in 2008. Instead, I walked for a year and roughly 4500km, passed the Gobi desert, and then decided to stop walking.
▶ All of the distance from Beijing to Ürümqi was completed solely on foot, straight good old walking. There are instances where you can see me in the video sitting on a plane or riding a boat, but those are during breaks I had to take from walking, either to sort out bureaucracy issues or to take care of some personal things.
▶ I had been planning this trip for over a year before I even started, and getting as far as I got was an experience for which I am very grateful.
▶ Obtaining the necessary visa for a trip like this was not very easy, hence I had to go back to Beijing a few times to resolve some issues.
▶ This is not a strict 1 pic a day video, because I wanted to make it a bit more alive by adding some additional movement. Sometimes during the film you would follow me turn around, or something would happen in the background. I tried to capture these moments to make the video more interesting.
▶ If you liked the music I used in this video, get it here: The Kingpins - L'Aventurier Zhu Fengbo - Olive Tree
▶ The core of this project is in actually my blog where I have posted my extensive travel diary, starting from day 1 (Nov 9th 2007) and describing every single day until the end one year later.
