Wanrong County is a county under the administration of Yuncheng City, in the southwest of Shanxi Province, China, bordering Shaanxi province to the west. The county's Gushan was credited by the Records of Yicheng County compiled during the Qianlong Era of the Qing as being the actual Mianshan mentioned in the legends of Jie Zhitui concerning the origins of the Cold Food Festival, rather than the Mt Mian in Jinzhong Prefecture.

The Stork Tower or Guanque Tower is an ancient Chinese tower in Puzhou Town, Yongji, Shanxi, China. It was located in the southwest outside the Puzhou ancient city, and near to the Pujin Ferry . The Stork Tower had reached unprecedented heyday in the Tang dynasty due to an eternally famous poem On the Stork Tower written by poet Wang Zhihuan . Alongside the Pavilion of Prince Teng, Yueyang Tower and Yellow Crane Tower, it is one of the Four Great Towers of China.

Ruling behind the curtain (垂簾聽政) is how Empress Dowager Cixi rules over the Chinese empire. She seized power in 1861 and has since acted as the regent for several infant emperors. During an audience, the emperor sits on the throne, behind which Cixi sits, with a curtain separating them. Cixi is behind the curtain because a female cannot get involved in politics in a patriarchy like China. Despite that, Cixi is the de facto ruler of the country; the emperor is just a puppet. And now, Guangxu the boy emperor has grown up. He wants to rule the nation on his own. Conflicts between the emperor and the regent therefore begin.

In this clip, Cixi examines a concubine of the emperor who interferes with government affairs, because the law prohibits females from politics. Ironically, Cixi herself is ruling the country, which could also be considered a political activity.

This clip is from a 2010 historical and political drama, The Firmament of the Pleiades (蒼穹之昴). The drama stars Japanese actress Yuko Tanaka (田中裕子) as Empress Dowager Cixi.

Wenxi Mountains in China

After a long 10 days teaching a Summer camp in Wenxi, China, we got to spend the morning and part of the afternoon with the girls in the mountains.

We were told we would go on a picnic.... turns out something got lost in translation and picnic turned into mountain climbing (which we weren't dressed for) I was told we can buy our lunch (there's no vendors anywhere, but the girls were amazing and brought us some snacks)

By the time we left, it was over 40 degrees Celsius and I was wearing jeans that aren't the best for climbing. We did have a wonderful time though and I will miss them.
