Place Vendôme is a square in the 1st arrondissement of Paris, France, located to the north of the Tuileries Gardens and east of the Église de la Madeleine. It is the starting point of the Rue de la Paix. Its regular architecture by Jules Hardouin-Mansart and pedimented screens canted across the corners give the rectangular Place Vendôme the aspect of an octagon. The original Vendôme Column at the centre of the square was erected by Napoleon I to commemorate the Battle of Austerlitz; it was torn down on 16 May 1871, by decree of the Paris Commune, but subsequently re-erected and remains a prominent feature on the square today.
Place Vendôme was laid out in 1702 as a monument to the glory of the armies of Louis XIV, the Grand Monarque and called Place des Conquêtes, to be renamed Place Louis le Grand, when the conquests proved temporary; an over life-size equestrian statue of the king was set up in its centre, donated by the city authorities; this was by François Girardon (1699) and is supposed to have been the first large modern equestrian statue to be cast in a single piece. It was destroyed in the French Revolution; however, there is a small version in the Louvre. This led to the popular joke that while Henri IV dwelled among the people by the Pont Neuf, and Louis XIII among the aristocrats of the Place des Vosges, Louis XIV preferred the company of the tax farmers in the Place Vendôme; each reflecting the group they had favoured in life.
The site of the square was formerly the hôtel of César, duc de Vendôme, the illegitimate son of Henry IV and his mistress Gabrielle d'Estrées. Hardouin-Mansart bought the building and its gardens, with the idea of converting it into building lots as a profitable speculation. The plan did not materialize, and Louis XIV's minister of finance, Louvois, purchased the piece of ground, with the object of building a square, modelled on the successful Place des Vosges of the previous century. Louvois came into financial difficulties and nothing came of his project, either. After his death, the king purchased the plot and commissioned Hardouin-Mansart to design a housefront that the buyers of plots round the square would agree to adhere to. When the state finances ran low, the financier John Law took on the project, built himself a residence behind one of the façades, and the square was complete by 1720, just as his paper-money Mississippi bubble burst.
The original column was started in 1806 at Napoleon's direction and completed in 1810. It was modelled after Trajan's Column, to celebrate the victory of Austerlitz; its veneer of 425 spiralling bas-relief bronze plates was made out of cannon taken from the combined armies of Europe, according to his propaganda (the usual figure given is hugely exaggerated: 180 cannon were actually captured at Austerlitz.) These plates were designed by the sculptor Pierre-Nolasque Bergeret and executed by a team of sculptors including Jean-Joseph Foucou, Louis-Simon Boizot, François Joseph Bosio, Lorenzo Bartolini, Claude Ramey, François Rude, Corbet, Clodion, Julie Charpentier, and Henri-Joseph Ruxthiel. A statue of Napoleon, bare-headed, crowned with laurels and holding a sword in his right hand and a globe surmounted with a statue of Victory (as in Napoleon as Mars the Peacemaker) in his left hand, was placed atop the column.
At the centre of the square's long sides, Hardouin-Mansart's range of Corinthian pilasters breaks forward under a pediment, to create palace-like fronts. The arcading of the formally rusticated ground floors does not provide an arcaded passageway as at Place des Vosges. The architectural linking of the windows from one floor to the next, and the increasing arch of their windowheads, provide an upward spring to the horizontals formed by ranks of windows. Originally the square was accessible by a single street and preserved an aristocratic quiet, except when the annual fair was held there. Then Napoléon opened the rue de la Paix, and the 19th century filled the Place Vendôme with traffic. It was only after the opening in 1875 of the Palais Garnier on the other side of the rue de la Paix that the centre of the Parisian fashionable life started gravitating around the rue de la Paix and the Place Vendôme.

Camping in France at la Palmyre
Situated in the Charente Maritime 10 miles from Royan and 50 miles from Bordeaux, in France. Perching on the edge of a natural bay overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, Bonne Anse Chalets is set in a magnificent 35 acre holiday park on Camping Bonne Anse Plage (4 stars), where nature flourishes just 600m from the beach. Walk from your static caravan directly to the beach!
Luxury rental accommodation
All of the models in our rental hire fleet are recent designs of static caravans and mobile homes.
Our 2 bedroom Cottage Savane has decking and a dishwasher even! Our Cottage Atlantique rentals all come equipped with wooden sun veranda, fridge freezer, microwave oven, coffee machine, mini safe and 3 bedrooms.
Our 6 berth mobile home is a family friendly model which comes with wooden decking and an area in the main bedroom to fit a childs cot. Our 4 berth hire unit has 2 bedrooms and garden furniture. All our models have on pitch parking.
Heated Swimming Pool Complex
Our pool complex features 2 large swimming pools and 4 giant water chutes.
Water Chute 1 is 25m long and slow, water chute 2 is 25 m and medium and chute 3 is 20m and very fast!
For younger children there is a separate mini water chute and paddling pool.
The pool area with its organized activities provides a focal point for your holidays and is under
permanent supervision from qualified lifeguards throughout the season.
The swimming pool area is open daily throughout the season.
On Site Facilities
Our on site facilities at Camping Bonne Anse you will find four star . Our reception is open daily and English is spoken. The following facilities are available on site; cash machine, fax, internet points, wi-fi access, post box for your postcards and safety deposit boxes.
There is an outdoor terrace and restaurant overlooking the stage which hosts nightly entertainment. There is also a take-away and bar area playing soft music during the day and TV area.
Supermarket and newsagents sells English newspapers, has a bakery which sells fresh bread and croissants daily. There is also a creperie and ice cream stand.
A separate launderette has washing machines and dryers.
Bike Rentals On site
Bicycles are very popular because access to the beach is direct. There is a network of cycle tracks and footpaths surrounding the campsite. You don't even have to walk to La Palmyre to rent your bikes because on site there is a bike hire service open daily which offers daily and weekly rentals and repairs if you bring your own bike.
Choose from children's bikes, adult bikes, mountain bikes, trailers and more. Child's seats and helmets are also available. Scooters and motorcycles can be ordered.
Places to Visit During Your Stay
The Zoo de La Palmyre, the largest zoo in France, is just 1 km away. Also visit the very impressive aquarium in La Rochelle, only an hours drive away.
The Gironde estuary and les Pertuis have a fascinating maritime history to discover by boat: the oyster beds of Marennes, Oleron, the Cordouan lighthouse (the oldest manned lighthouse in Europe), the well known Boyard Fort, Louvois Fort, the islands of Ré and Oleron are not to be missed.
The campsite is an ideal base for visiting the vineyards of Bordeaux, just take to ferry to cross the estuary.
Popular with families is the Futuroscope in Poitiers, stop over on the way back home.

How to Find Bonne Anse Chalets
We are about 5 hours from Paris. Take the autoroute A10 and turn off at Saintes, junction 35. Follow the signposts to Royan, Les Mathes and La Palmyre.
From La Rochelle take the D937 toward Rochefort .When you arrive at the big roundabout in La Palmyre, take the first right towards Ronce Les Bains (D25). After 1 mile you'll see 3 large colourful waterslides in the woods to your left, this is Camping Bonne Anse Plage
From Bordeaux, leave the A10 at Mirambeau, junction 37, and follow the D730 towards Royan.
If you are looking to go camping in France, look no further !
Fort Louvois 2017
Joyau de l'architecture militaire du XVIIème.siècle, Fort-Louvois (...ou Fort du Chapus) a été imaginé par Vauban et édifié en mer en 1694. Face à la commune de Bourcefranc-le-Chapus, la forteresse assurait la défense des Pertuis et plus particulièrement les instrusions de l'ennemi sur les côtes Charentaises. Sa forme très caractéristique en Fer à cheval lui confère une importante robustesse aux assauts de l'ennemi et de la mer. Les dégâts les plus importants seront à déplorer durant la seconde guerre mondiale par de sévères pilonnages. Restauré en 1962, il retrouve tout son faste.

The neighbourhood is fine, it is just down the road from the moulin rouge and a short walk into the city and to connections such as The Big Red Bus or subways.
