Great Campground & Free Activities in Rotorua
Rotorua (New Zealand) has been a real surprise. Growing up in New Zealand, I always thought of it as a place to avoid. Too touristy and smelly from all the thermal activity in the area. But I decided to have a proper explore this time and have been impressed.
What impressed me?
- I stayed at a fantastic affordable lakeside campground just outside of Rotorua with some great sunsets.
- I found it extremely easy to go hiking in some nearby forests.
- The town is large enough to have a couple of good sided -
supermarkets and they are even building a Kmart.
- There is no painful Auckland traffic!
- Looking at the map, it's in a great location for freelancing with Tauranga, Taupo, Cambridge and Hamilton surrounding it.
I know I will be visiting again soon and see if it would be a good base.

Kite Kite Falls and Omeru Waterfall | New Zealand
It was an amazing day in New Zealand visiting the Kite Kite falls and the Omeru Falls. Finishing with a few skydives at Skydive Auckland.
Kitekite Falls, also known as Kitakita Falls, is located in the western part of Waitakere Ranges Regional Park, near the famous Piha Beach. This spectacular 40-meters multi-steps waterfall is reached after a more or less easy 45 minutes’ walk.
Omeru falls are a very good place to visit. A series of three waterfalls - Omeru Falls, Waitangi Falls and Waitangi Stream Cascade, is located in Omeru Pā Scenic Reserve on the east side of the Kaipara Coast Highway between Kaukapakapa and the Makarau River. A great BBQ area and multiple swimming spots make these waterfalls and Scenic Reserve a very popular place among the locals.
If you don’t know what to do in New Zealand and you are finding things to do in New Zealand, these two waterfalls to visit and you will have an amazing time. There are many things to do in New Zealand! You will not be short of things to robin New Zealand.

Queen Elizabeth Park on the Kapiti Coast - New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year – BackpackerGuide.NZ
Day 71: Today we are checking out the walks in Queen Elizabeth Park along the Kapiti Coast of New Zealand! Join us for a free thing to do on the Kapiti Coast!
Yesterday - Day 70 -
Tomorrow – Day 72 –
About this video:
Today we are checking out an awesome free thing to do on the Kapiti Coast, walking in Queen Elizabeth Park. We head to Queen Elizabeth Park in Kapiti which is just off the main highway in New Zealand to walks through rolling sand dunes with regenerating vegetation on them.
Along the sand dunes in Queen Elizabeth Park in Kapiti is a long stretching beach with awesome views of Kapiti Island out to sea. We head down to the beach to capture some photos and get some awesome views around Queen Elizabeth Park on the Kapiti Coast.
After struggling our way back up onto the sand dunes in Queen Elizabeth Park, we continue on the loop back around to the start with our shoes full of sand but still feeling epic after our walk in Queen Elizabeth Park in Kapiti.
Our day ends with a barbeque back at Moana Lodge in Plimmerton where we are staying for a couple of days as we explore the Kapiti Coast and the Wellington suburbs.
So what do you think of Queen Elizabeth Park on the Kapiti Coast? Is Queen Elizabeth Park somewhere you would stop off on your way to Wellington?

Purakaunui Bay Campsite Tour and Review | Best Campsites Camping New Zealand
Take a quick video tour of Purakaunui Bay Campsite and campground. The site is located close to Purakaunui, Tawanui, and Hinahina.
Review
We thought this was the most beautiful campsite we visited and could have stayed for days. There was so much space to spread out and plenty of room for self contained and non self contained campers.
It would have been difficult to park anywhere and not have a beautiful ocean view. The surfers and body boarders that we talked to said that it was their favorite camp spot but a few of them were startled by a territorial seal that appeared!
The only downsides at this awesome spot is that there is no drinking water on tap- you have to boil water out of the spigot. Additionally, this is a pay site- which we think it well deserves to be.
This camp site is the reason people travel to New Zealand.

Glenquoich Lodge and Holiday Park Tour and Review | Best Campsites and Campgrounds New Zealand
Review:
Glenquoich Lodge and Holiday Park is located in Athol, New Zealand and close to the gorgeous Mataura River. This campground/campsite is one of our favorite places we stayed in New Zealand because of the low price and great private bathroom pods on the site.
Wife and I were able to stay overnight for $20 NZD and enjoy our own private space. The bathroom pods are absolutely top notch. You get an electric outlet, hot shower, sink, and flushing toilet. Behind the pod, there is a spigot for dish washing/drinking water. After a week in the fiordland these things felt like amazing luxuries. We honestly don't understand why this style of camping with bathroom pod is not at more sites in NZ. Yes, it costs a bit more than some sites, but you get far more in return.
We actually don't have any criticisms for this site. Everything was top notch. There were some friendly animals that we shared a fenceline with that could have been stars of their own Disney movie. There was a sense of privacy between campsites with a row of hedges in between. Even if you're staying in a tent, each site had a patch of soft grass to set up in.
Absolute top notch campsite/campground/motorcamp. If you're traveling during the busy season make sure you phone ahead an get a reservation.

-$15 for 1 Person/ +$5 every additional

-Hot Showers
-Rooms available for rent
-Access to well appointed kitchen and tv room for $10/person

Thicket Burn Campsite Tour and Review | Best Free Campsites Camping New Zealand
Take a quick video tour of Thicket Burn campsite and campground. The site is located close to Lillburn and Rowallan as well as Lake Hauroko.
Thicket Burn Campsite Review:
We really enjoyed our time at the Thicket Burn Campsite because of the close proximity to Lake Hauroko. In fact, if you're looking for a free campsite close to Lake Hauroko this is your only choice! The lake is about a 10 min (6km) drive from the Thicket Burn Campsite and a great starting point on the awesome Lookout Point hike.
The hike itself took us over the 3 hours listed as we stopped often for pictures and video. The campground was another great free campsite with the only downside being the empty water tank. Even after a night of rain campers quickly drained the tank the next day.
Campsite Details:
20 unpowered sites
Long Drop Toilet(1)
Water Tank- Must be boiled
Free Camping Site
Freedom camping allowed
Must pack out trash
Unpowered
6km drive down to lake
