What to do in Norfolk with Kids
A quick look at some of the fun we got up to during our weekend in Norfolk County, Ontario. Full post at
Hickling, Norfolk Broads, UK
SEE MY HISTORY PAGE ON FACEBOOK :
Hickling is a very attractive village on the Norfolk Broads, next to Hickling Broad which is the largest broad in the system. It is located quite close to the sea at Sea Palling. The village covers a large area with a very low density as can be seen in this film.
The Doomsday Book refers to the Village as Hikelinga, and mentions a Church being here - noting that Godwin, a free man of Edric of Laxfield' s, held Hickling before 1066.
Hickling Priory, some distance from the Parish Church towards Sea Palling, was founded in 1185. The Priory was granted a Charter by King John, in 1204, to hold a weekly market. The market took place near St. Mary's Parish Church for some five hundred years. (The Priory ruins are on private land and are not open to the public.)
The church was started in 1204 and can be seen in this film although much was added later.
In 1287 a flood engulfed the village, and 180 people were drowned. The waters rose 30cm above the high altar of the priory church. Less than a century later, in 1349, the Black Death struck. At the Priory only two of the canons were left alive, and more than half the population of the village must have died.
During the Middle Ages peat was dug from the marshes for fuel; the diggings later flooding to form the Broads. Hickling Broad, the largest and wildest of the Norfolk Broads, has for a long time played an important part in the social and commercial life of the village.
Agriculture has always been a major feature of rural life in Hickling, and it continues to be so today, though many fewer people now work on the land than formerly.
Both Stubb Mill, an important drainage mill, and Hickling Mill, near the Methodist Chapel, date from the early nineteenth century. Hickling Mill was described in 1819 as a handsome new mill. It had eight floors and three pairs of French stones, being capable of producing 4320 stones of wheat in a week.
King George V and King George VI visited the Village and Whiteslea Lodge. One occasion in 1959 is well remembered when, because Whiteslea Lodge was flooded, the Duke of Edinburgh and Charles, Prince of Wales, stayed at The Pleasure Boat Inn. The Prince of Wales was in Hickling in 2001 to visit the Nature Reserve.

My channel on you tube : is one of the most prolific from Poland. I have produced around 1,800 original films, most in English. My big interest in life is travel and history but I have also placed films on other subjects.
Please feel free to ask questions in the public area or to comment on things you disagree with. Sometimes there are mistakes because I speak without preparation. If I see the mistakes myself, I make this clear in the text. Please also leave a star rating!
There are a number of films here on the packaging industry. This is because I am the publisher of Central and Eastern European Packaging -- - the international platform for the packaging industry in this region focusing on the latest innovations, trends, design, branding, legislation and environmental issues with in-depth profiles of major industry achievers.
Most people may think packaging pretty boring but it possibly effects your life more than you really imagine!
Central and Eastern European Packaging examines the packaging industry throughout this region, but in particular in the largest regional economies which are Russia, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Ukraine and Austria. That is not to say that the other countries are forgotten, they are not, but obviously there is less going on. However the fact that there are so many travel related films here is not from holidays but from business trips attending trade fairs around the region. Every packaging trade fair is a new excuse to make another film!
How Hill Nature Reserve in Norfolk England
How Hill Nature Reserve is a great place to explore the Norfolk Broads. We took the Electric Eel boat tour on the Broads and then did the How Hill Nature Walk stopping at the How Hill Secret Gardens along the way. I enjoyed seeing the wildlife, especially some of the rare Norfolk Broads birds. It was a nice way to spend an afternoon on the Broads.

The village taking a taste of North Norfolk to West Africa
16 people from Smallburgh are planning the trip of a lifetime to West Africa - on a double decker bus.
It was the idea of landlady of The Crown Inn, Eunice Kokrasset, who moved from the Ivory Coast three years ago.
She's hoping to give something back to the community which welcomed her, and help the poverty stricken country at the same time.

Romance On The Lake, Houseboat, Alleppey (Kerala, India), 2018
Romance On The Lake, Houseboat, Alleppey (Kerala, India), 2018
A houseboat (different from boathouse, which is a shed for storing boats) is a boat that has been designed or modified to be used primarily as a home. Some houseboats are not motorized, because they are usually moored, kept stationary at a fixed point and often tethered to land to provide utilities. H Romance On The Lake, Houseboat however, many are capable of operation under their own power. Float house is a Canadian and American term for a house on a float (raft), a rough house may be called a shanty boat.[1] In Western countries, houseboats tend to be either owned privately or rented out to holiday-goers, and on some canals in Europe, people dwell in houseboats all year round. Examples of this include, but are not limited to, Amsterdam, London, and Paris.[2]Romance On The Lake, Houseboat, Alleppey (Kerala, India), 2018
In India, houseboats as accommodation for tourists are common on the backwaters of Kerala, see below, and on the Dal Lake near Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir.
Houseboats in Kerala, south India, are huge, slow-moving barges used for leisure trips. They are a reworked model of Kettuvallams (in the Malayalam language, Kettu means tied with ropes, and vallam means boat), which, in earlier times, were used to carry rice and spices from Kuttanad to the Kochi port. Kerala houseboats were considered a convenient means of transportation.
The popularity of Kettuvallams has returned in the function as major tourist attractions.
Such a houseboat is about 60 to 70 feet (18 to 21 m) long and about 15 feet (4.6 m) wide at the middle. The hull is made of wooden planks that are held together by ropes of coconut fiber; the usual wood is 'Anjali'. The roof is made of bamboo poles and palm leaves. The exterior of the boat is painted with protective coats of cashew nut oil.
Kashmir houseboats[edit]
Houseboat on Dal Lake in Srinagar, Kashmir
House boats on Nageen Lake, Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir, India.
Unlike their counterparts in Kerala, the houseboats in Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir are usually stationary. They are usually moored at the edges of the Dal Lake and Nageen lakes. Some of the houseboats there were built in the early 1900s, and are still being rented out to tourists. These houseboats are made of wood and usually have intricately carved wood paneling. The houseboats are of different sizes, some having up to three bedrooms apart from a living room and kitchen.
Many tourists are attracted to Srinagar by the charm of staying on a houseboat, which provides the unique experience of living on the water in a cedar-paneled elegant bedroom, with all the conveniences of a luxury hotel. Srinagar's thousand or so houseboats are moored along sections of the Dal and Nagin Lakes and the Jhelum River, each decorated fancifully and named romantically and even whimsically. Like hotels, houseboats vary in degree of luxury and have been accordingly graded by the Department of Tourism. A luxury houseboat, like a luxury hotel, has fine furniture, good carpets and modern bathroom fittings, while the 'D category' (the lowest category) of houseboats, like low-budget hotels, is spartanly furnished. Like hotels too, houseboats vary widely in their locations. Some overlook the main road, others look out onto lotus gardens and others face tiny local markets and villages, which are also floating on the lake. All houseboats, regardless of category, have highly personalized service. Not only is there always a houseboy for every boat, but the owner and his family are often close by. The cost per day of hiring a houseboat includes all meals and free rides from the houseboat to the nearest jetty and back, as no houseboat on the lakes is directly accessible from the banks.
Every standard houseboat provides a balcony in the front, a lounge, dining room, pantry and three or more bedrooms with attached bathrooms. All houseboats not moored to the bank of the river or lakes provide a shikara as a free service from the houseboat to the nearest Ghat (jetty). Virtually every houseboat in Srinagar has been provided with a municipal water connection.
