S4 E19 Day 3 Fish Lake Loop, Utah May 2017
This circumnavigation of Fish Lake along the Lakeshore Trail in Fish Lake National Forest brims with wildlife, an 1840s era pioneer trail, and a single 80,000+ year old living organism spanning over 100 acres. The option to stage a bike for quicker travel along the developed western shore of this fish-shaped lake helps enable a day hike and worthy short cut for some. This loop can start from anywhere along the western shore; Starting clockwise from the Lake Creek trailhead on the northern end provides quicker access to wilderness away from cars and boats.
Here is how Rick and Lynne Stinchfield accurately describe Fish Lake in their guide book Beyond Capitol Reef:
Maybe in a State that boasts both Great Salt Lake and Lake Powell it might be expected that a gorgeous high elevation fresh water lake with beautiful surroundings, excellent fishing, and a spectacular aspen color extravaganza each fall would receive less than its due. Still, it is hard to imagine how little notice Fish Lake gets compared to what it deserves.
Beavers, eagles, ospreys, pelicans, geese and various other shorebirds along the remote eastern shore of fish lake provided great company on this memorable mid-may trip.

The Fishlake National Forest in central Utah features majestic stands of aspen encircling open mountain meadows that are lush with a diverse community of forbs and grasses. Fish Lake, from which the forest takes its name, is considered by many to be the gem of Utah. The largest natural mountain lake in the state, it offers trophy fishing and bird watching. The mountains of the Fishlake are a source of water for many of the neighboring communities and agricultural valleys in the region. Elk, deer, black bear, cougar and moose can be found on the Forest, as well as wild turkey and mountain goats.
When the Pando Clone was discovered, scientists named it with a Latin word that means “I spread.” An aspen clone starts with a single seed and spreads by sending up new shoots from the expanding root system. These shoots become trees that are genetically identical.
Pando, located about 1 mile southwest of Fish Lake on State Highway 25, is believed to be the largest organism ever found at nearly 13 million pounds. The clone spreads over 106 acres, consisting of over 40,000 individual trees.
Pando welcomes visitors coming to the Fish Lake Basin from the southwest on SR-25. In the summer the green, fluttering leaves symbolize the relief from summer’s heat that you get coming to the basin. In autumn the oranges and yellows of the leaves as they change color give a hint of the fall spectacular that is the Fish Lake Basin.
Visitors from many states, as well as other nations have travelled to central Utah to see and experience Pando, especially during the fall season when the leaves turn to yellow and orange. In 2006 the U.S. Postal Service honored the Pando Clone as one of the “40 Wonders of America” with a stamp in its commemoration.
And yet, Pando is struggling. Like many stands of aspen, disease and insect infestation coupled with years of fire suppression and hungry mouths have taken their toll. However, employees of the Fishlake National Forest along with partner organizations are doing something about it.
Funded in part through Title II of the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act, partners have fenced off approximately 67 acres of the Pando aspen clone to prevent new shoots and saplings from being eaten.
Since the fence was completed, a treatments are being used to stimulate regeneration of young aspen. Treatments include the following:
Burning—this includes under-burning of common juniper understory, which exists as discrete ground-cover layers throughout the clone.
Cutting—in addition to clearing the trees and vegetation close to the fence line, selected areas will be cut to remove overstory, allowing additional sunlight for new shoots, and stimulate regeneration of young sprouts. Cut trees not necessary for protection of regeneration will be moved to an area outside of the fence and will be available for firewood.
Monitoring of the fencing and treatments will be implemented to determine the most effective means of regenerating aspen within the clone. Some text sourced from:

Arapeen OHV Trail System, Utah
Highlights off highway vehicle trails on the Manti Mountain of central Utah. The Arapeen Trail System, located 2 hours south of Salt Lake City, Utah on Highway 89, is a great family trail with plenty of advanced sections for experienced riders. It’s a great place to ride if you want to avoid the crowded canyons closer to the city. The Arapeen Trail can be accessed from one of seven canyons in the Sanpete Valley. The Arapeen Trail has over 550 miles of trail which are open to ATV's, Side by Sides, and Motorcycles. The trail system ascends from 6,000 feet in altitude to over 10,000 above sea level. -Ride through upper Kane Creek Trail near Moab, UT. May, 2016. Filmed using my gopro hero 2 attached to the roll cage of the Polaris RZR using a roll bar mount. I apologize for how shaky the camera is from the vibration of the UTV. Kane Creek trail is a great way to see some awesome scenery, wind caves, and rock paintings. Trail difficulty level for the upper trail is much easier than many other trails in the area and I would recommend doing it before tackling other more difficult trails.
