13. Decembrists' MuseumMinusinsk The Decembrist revolt or the Decembrist uprising took place in Imperial Russia on 26 December [O.S. 14 December] 1825. Russian army officers led about 3,000 soldiers in a protest against Tsar Nicholas I's assumption of the throne after his elder brother Constantine removed himself from the line of succession. Because these events occurred in December, the rebels were called the Decembrists . The uprising, which was suppressed by Nicholas I, took place in Peter's Square in Saint Petersburg. In 1925, to mark the centenary of the event, the square was renamed Decembrist Square; but in 2008 the name was changed back to its original name, Senate Square. Krasnoyarsk was described by the great Russian writer as “the most beautiful city in Siberia….” being situated on the River Yenisei and surrounded by dense forest and natural landscapes.. The settlement was originally founded on August 19, 1628 when a fort was constructed to protect the frontier lands from the native peoples..The fort was named Krasny Yar. Krasnoyarsk grew rapidly following the arrival of the “Siberian route” a road that connected the nearby towns of Achinsk and Kansk with Krasnoyarsk and the rest of Russia in the mid 18th century.. In 1822 Krasny Yar was granted town status and became the administrative centre of Yeniseysk Governorate. Following the construction of the Trans-Siberian railway in 1895, the town became an important junction with manufacturing facilities, railway and engineering workshops. Krasnoyarsk was also a place to which political exiles were sent.. As we see from these photographs, the inhabitants of Krasnoyarsk had many amusements to occupy their leisure times.....
