Hokkien Fried Noodles in Phuket at Lock Tien (ลกเที้ยน) Restaurant
Lock Tien (ลกเที้ยน) is one of Phuket’s famous restaurants for serving Hokkien style noodles. Get more details here:
Phuket is well known for its beaches, but I think it’s an amazing place in Thailand for trying delicious food. The island has a diversity of cultures and a mixture of influences including local Malay, Thai, Indian, Portuguese, and one of the largest influences of all, Chinese - many of whom have roots in either the Teochew or Hokkien (Fujian) people of China. The food and restaurants in Phuket reflect its diversity of cultures, and when you’re in Phuket you’ll find plenty of Chinese restaurants. One of the most famous low-key everyday restaurants that’s reached near legendary status in Phuket town is a place called Lock Tien (ลกเที้ยน), and they specialize in Hokkien style fried noodles.
One mid-morning my wife and I headed to Lock Tien (ลกเที้ยน) restaurant to check it out and to get a taste of these beloved noodles in Phuket. The restaurant is popular for both locals and also there were many Bangkok Thai tourists eating there when we went as well. The restaurant is situated on the corner of Dibuk and Yaowarat roads, right on the edge of the Old Town of Phuket. It’s set up sort of like an open air street food court, with a number of different food carts positioned around the dining area. There is a menu, so you don’t go up to a cart to order like a food court, but when you order, whatever stall the dish you ordered comes from, they will bring you the dish.
For my main dish I ordered a bowl of mee leung pad Hokkien sai kai (หมี่เหลืองผัดฮกเกี้ยนใส่ใข่), or translated as fried yellow noodles Hokkien style, with an egg on top. I could smell the noodles as they were being cooked, the smoke of the wok filled the entire food court at Lock Tien (ลกเที้ยน). The yellow noodles came in just a little bit of sauce, with some vegetables, a few pieces of char siu Chinese bbq pork, some seafood pieces, and finally a soft boiled egg on the side of my bowl. It was a marvelous bowl of noodles. It had a smoky flavor from being fried on such a high heat, and it was just salty enough, and I really liked the gravy, which was rich and full of flavor. The noodles were slightly gooey, and then combined with the extra richness of the egg, and the pieces of squid and vegetables, it was excellent. I also garnished my bowl of Hokkien fried noodles (หมี่เหลืองผัดฮกเกี้ยนใส่ใข่) with some vinegar and some dry chili flakes to add even more delicious flavor.
Along with my bowl of noodles, we also ordered a plate of pork satay (หมูสะเต๊ะ), called moo satay in Thai. The meat was nicely seasoned and coated in the richness of coconut milk. The sauce was a little on the sweet side for me, but it did have a nice peanut base, and I also liked the pickles that came with this version of satay. Overall, it wasn’t the best Thai pork satay (หมูสะเต๊ะ) I’ve ever had, but it wasn’t bad. Also, although I didn’t try it, one of the other famous Phuket foods to eat at Lock Tien (ลกเที้ยน) are the fresh spring rolls called por pia sot. So if you’re interested in giving them a try, they are available and many have said they are very good.
Overall, I think Lock Tien (ลกเที้ยน) is a pretty good and easy restaurant to eat at in Phuket.

You’ll find Thai street food on many street corners in Thailand, as well as at every market, be it in Krabi, Phuket, Bangkok or Pattaya. Thai food has taken many influences from Chinese food so you will find many familiar flavours. Thai food markets and night markets are some of the best places to buy fresh and authentic Thai food while you travel in Thailand. There are loads of Thai food markets and night market all over Thailand, you’re never far from one. At the markets you'll find so many Thai dishes on offer and the foods here are cheap, and so tasty! And in case you’re worried, eating Thai street food is perfectly safe. It’s what the locals eat and it is cooked fresh and sold quickly. I’ve been eating it nearly daily since April 2012 in Thailand and my friends who have been to visit and tour Thailand have all eaten it, and none of us have had any problems. Thai street food is some of the best Thai food you’ll find in Thailand!

If you're looking into Thailand Hotels have a look at hotels and resorts in Krabi. The islands and beaches of Krabi are famous for Thailand holidays, the movie The Beach was filmed on Krabi's Koh Phi Phi Island.

Bang Krachao (บางกระเจ้า) - Bangkok Bike Tour of Phra Pradaeng (and Lunch)
A Bangkok bike tour of Bang Krachao (บางกระเจ้า) in Phra Pradaeng (พระประแดง) makes an excellent day trip. Read more of my Bangkok travel tips here:
Bang Krachao (บางกระเจ้า), or the larger area of Phra Pradaeng (พระประแดง), is known as Bangkok's green lunch. It's not an island, but it's a section of land that's separated from major Bangkok by being within a horseshoe in the river. The piece of land is just across the river from Bangkok city, but it's such a world of difference. Characterized by trees, green spaces, low homes and neighborhoods, and a network of canals and elevated walking paths creates the perfect environment for a Bangkok bike tour. The first step getting to Bang Krachao (บางกระเจ้า) is to first take a taxi to Wat Khlong Toei Nok temple, located in the Khlong Toei area of Bangkok and right along the Chao Phraya river. For just 10 baht you can then board a small boat that will ferry you across the Chao Phraya to Bang Krachao (บางกระเจ้า), a whole new world. The ride takes just a few minutes.
Once you've arrived to Bang Krachao (บางกระเจ้า), you can then rent a bicycle as soon as you get off the boat. The bikes for rent cost 50 Thai Baht per hour or 100 Thai Baht per day - I think it's worth it to go for the whole day - and you might end up staying longer than you expected - so go for the day rental! After getting out trusty bicycles ready, we started off following the road enroute to the main park that's located within Bang Krachao (บางกระเจ้า). It took just about 10 minutes or less to reach the designated park where you can enter and ride and walk around for free. The park is nicely maintained and there's a large lake in the middle. But the park is not the only place to ride in Phra Pradaeng (พระประแดง). One of my favorite parts of the area is riding along the elevated concrete paths. They are raised above the ground as the ground can be muddy and flooded, but the paths provide an awesome form of transportation. They are just wide enough to have a Bangkok bike tour on them comfortably. Another interesting aspect of biking around are the many temples which are all around. You can stop off at a variety of temples when you're biking along. Also, if you go to Phra Pradaeng (พระประแดง) on the weekend, you can bike to Bang Nam Pheung (ตลาดน้ำบางน้ำผึ้ง) floating market ( After biking around for a few hours we decided to stop at a relaxing restaurant for some Thai food lunch. There are many Thai restaurants to eat at throughout Bang Krachao (บางกระเจ้า) when you're taking a Bangkok bike tour - you'll have no problem finding food or drinks.
A Bangkok bike tour of Bang Krachao (บางกระเจ้า) and Phra Pradaeng (พระประแดง) is one of the best things to do in Bangkok! It's a great affordable attraction and offers not only some exercise from all the Thai street food, but also a time to relax and enjoy nature.

Petchaburi Soi 5 (เพชรบุรี ซอย 5) has long been one of my go-to street food streets in Bangkok. Starting in the evening at around 4 pm, the entire road starts to fill with street food carts selling all sorts of Thai dishes. You’ll find everything from rice and curry to soup noodles, snacks, and fresh fruits and vegetables. It had been a few years since I had explore Petchaburi Soi 5 (เพชรบุรี ซอย 5), so in this Thai street food tour I’m taking you with me to some of my old favorites, and some new spots. Enjoy!

Cha yen (ชาเย็น) - 25 THB ($0.76) per cup - Thai tea
Pad thai (ผัดไทย), Hoy tod (หอยทอด) - This was formerly a street food cart that now has their own permanent shophouse location. They make pretty decent Pad Thai and they hoy tod, which in this case in a mussels omelet, is pretty good as well.
Total price - 125 THB ($3.81)
Nam prik pla too (น้ำพริกปลาทู) - For something a little healthier, I’m a huge fan of nam pirk pla too, a pounded chili mackerel sauce that’s eaten with vegetables.
Total price - 70 THB ($2.14) for everything
Chao guay (เฉาก๋วย) - 25 THB ($0.76) - For dessert, I had grass jelly with ice. The owner was so friendly and happy.
Haircut - 100 THB ($3.05)
Pad kra prao moo krob kai dao (ผัดกระเพราหมูกรอบไข่ดาว) - Final meal of this Bangkok street food tour, I headed across the street to Petchaburi Soi 10 to seek out one of my old time favorites. The stall was still there, and they make a pretty good plate of Thai crispy pork belly fried with basil.
Price - 40 THB ($1.22)
Thank you for joining me on this Thai street food tour of Petchaburi Soi 5 (เพชรบุรี ซอย 5). It’s the type of street you can walk through and just choose whatever you like to eat.

Thai Grilled Chicken - Gai Yang (ไก่ย่าง)
Grab a copy of my Eating Thai Food Guide here: and check out my travel and street food website
It would be virtually impossible to say anything negative about Thai grilled chicken, known as Gai Yang (ไก่ย่าง). It's available all over the streets from Bangkok to Chiang Mai to Nakhon Pathom, and you'll be able to smell the luscious aroma of grilled chicken smoke from hundreds of meters away.
So for today's video I was in Nakhon Pathom, about an hour outside of central Bangkok, a city that happens to be famous for their Gai Yang (ไก่ย่าง). It can be found across the city, being grilled up and then laying on banana leaves waiting to be purchased. Believe me, every time you walk past, you'll be tempted to purchase. And that's exactly what happened to me, I had no intention of eating Thai grilled chicken that day, but the fumes and the juicy looking chicken thighs were all I need to lure me in. Soon I found myself choosing a big fat chicken piece and my mouth was drooling for a taste.
There are a few different marinades for Thai Grilled Chicken Gai Yang (ไก่ย่าง). This version, that's widely available in Nakhon Pathom is first soaked in turmeric (to make it orange), fish sauce, salt, garlic, and some kind of sugar to make it slightly sweetened. Once the chicken has been marinated, it's then attached to a bamboo stick. It's then thrown on the hot fire and roasted until done, but not overcooked to the point where it's dry. The great thing about the chicken vendor I bought from was that she had hand grilled every piece to perfection. I think she took some real care in her grilled chicken.
Along with my choice of chicken piece, which was fresh off the grill and still hot, I also bought a bag of fresh sticky rice. Back to the chicken, that first bite was miraculous - it was so good I almost couldn't believe it was chicken. It was salty to perfection, nicely garlicky, and the tinge of turmeric made it even better. A bite of Thai grilled chicken (gai yang ไก่ย่าง), chased by a bite of plain sticky rice is one combination the Thais have seriously mastered.
When you eat grilled chicken in Thailand, make sure you choose the fresh hot pieces that haven't been sitting out all day. If the vendor is still cooking, you can be more sure that her chicken is fresh and good to eat. Also, feel free to choose your piece of chicken and then throw it back on the grill to re-heat it if necessary. You don't have to go to Nakhon Pathom to eat gai yang, I just happened to be there for this video, but you'll find grilled chicken all over Thailand!
